5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best microbiology review book
This book is great. It covers everything you need to know for step 1, while leaving out all you dont' need to know. The questions are probably the best micro vignette questions out there, and helps reinforce what you learned from the book.
This book is much better than micro made ridiculously simple in terms of boards review. Its written in outline format so you can get through it much faster, and it includes an immunology section that has all you need to know for the immunology questions on the step.

The only thing I don't like is the Rapid Review format. At times the outline format should be written in complete sentences (like the high-yield series) to avoid confusing statments/facts. For me, this seemed especially true in theimmunology section, which can be confusing if you have a weak immuno background.

Other than that, this is a great review book. The only review book for micro in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Microbiology and Immunology
Perfect for medical microbio class. I used Micro Made easy for class, and after reading this book to review for the boards I would definately recommend it over Micro made easy. The organization is better, it's a shorter text, has an outline format, has excellent tables that while are not as detailed as the micro made easy book are a lot easier to read, and it has everything you need to know for class, which micro made easy does not.

Immuno section is a bit brief but it has all the essentials. I would also recommend reading Immunobiology by Janeway and Medical Microbiology by Murray. Both texts are outstanding and really help you appreciate the subjects. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for every Clinical microbiologist
I think that the Manual of Clinical Microbiology isa must reading for every one involved in this field. It has almost everything one needs in everyday managing of laboratory microbiology.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book just keeps getting better
very very goog, this edition includes more color plates. These figures are especially important to such a visual discipline in microbiology,in bacteriology is excelent, VOLUME1:Bacteriology!!! and VOLUME2: Virology , Mycology, Parasitology

5-0 out of 5 stars manual of clinical microbiology, Vol 1 and 2
This is the gold star standard for practicing clinical microbiologists

4-0 out of 5 stars ONE STEP BENEATH EXCELLENCE
At 1773 pages, the "Manual of Clinical Microbiology" is a good (medium size) reference for a clinical or diagnostic microbiologist. It offers detailed information on both practical and theoretical aspects of the subject. Its authority is unquestionable. Pathologists, doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and anybody whose business concerns infectious diseases will find the book useful.
The only setback is that it is awkwardly expensive. Many potential buyers would be enticed by cheaper alternatives: there are lots of them out there. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great questions for microbiology but need topic-specific organization
The best way I've found to learn material is to do problems. Hence I purchased this book to complement the course lecture / notes offering at my school. The questions are very good, many are vignette-based which is similar to the way our exams are written. In terms of the material covered and the difficulty of the questions, I would give this a 4 or a 5.

However the book has only four chapters - Bacteriology, Virology, Mycology and Parasitology. My school teaches material based on modules - Cardiovascular, Pulmonoary, GI, etc. Hence, trying to find the appropriate questions to to in the book is a nightmare. For instance, if I want to review my pulmonary learning, I first go to the Bacteriology question, read the intro to EACH question, and determine if it's something I'm supposed to know about (ie is it an URTI, LRTI, pneumonia, typical/atypical tuberculosis, etc). I have to do this for each of the four sections (well, for Pulmonary at least Parasitology is not applicable). As you can imagine this can be a painstaking process, especially since I, like most medical students, am already pressed for time.

This would not be such a problem if there was a list somewhere - either in the book or on the web - listing questions based on topic. For instance, with Pulmonary - Bacteriology q4, 9, 20, 28, 34, 41, 49, 55, 121; Virology - 54, 76, 100; Mycology - 17, 21, 22, 25.

Alas, such a list does not exist, But, as far as I know, this is the best / only question book available, so it will have to suffice. Again, if material were organized better or if question numbers were listed somewhere based on topic, I would give this book a 4 if not 5. But because of the difficulty in finding appropriate questions, I'm giving it a 3-.

5-0 out of 5 stars good textbook
it arrived on time in good condition and it was a much better deal than buying at my college bookstore or a local bookstore.

3-0 out of 5 stars An informative snooze
I ordered this book because it was the required text for my Microbiology course at college. After having taken other specific biology classes without a book specific to the course (ie- Plant Bio/Botany with a General Biology book) I find this book very helpful.

I do have to admit, though, that if you're looking to fall asleep this book is more effective than a glass of warm milk.

From what I have read so far, though, the book is very informative. For the most part the text is concise, avoiding rambling or drawn out points. As another reviewer said, you might find a few rough patches when reading if you aren't entirely familiar with a lot of the basic, earlier bio course terms. The authors don't take any time to explain any concepts that they expect most students will have learned by the time they're taking microbiology. So, if you're taking this out of order, or early, you might want to have some kind of general bio reference at hand. I believe that a the book is also aimed at students who have already taken Plant Bio/Botany, which is not the case at all schools.

Buying on Amazon was an excellent choice, I saved about $80. Just remember, the earlier the better! And pray that you don't have to lug this beast of a book to class with you!

Very happy with the transaction. After using the book for only a week however, the spine that binds the pages together has split apart and is failing to hold the paper together. There seems to be an obvious quality control issue from the manufacturer/binding company.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
As a first year medical student I've really enjoyed this book.I think it's tough to make an all inclusive book on microbiology but Sherris does a pretty good job.I think it's got the right balance of clinical and micro information for a med student.I love the little summary lines they put in the margins- it helps you pick out the most important stuff and skim through stuff you already know or don't need to know.Very readable- not too dense, not to superficial.I was a microbiology major in college and had a lot of books that went into much more depth on stuff like molecular biology and had very little clinical information and so, again, for medical students and board prep, I think this has the right combination of material.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but they left out a lot
Don't throw away your Fourth Edition! The Fifth Edition has a lot to recommend it: much better artwork, more sensible organization of basic theory and microbe-specific detail, up-to-date pathophysiology and therapies, etc. In the Preface the editors state that much material has been "trimmed" to keep this edition the same size as the previous one. They should have opted for a bigger book. First, they left out all the references; not a single one is to be found. This was a valuable feature of the Fourth Edition, and pointed to much relevant material for further study. A cryptic excuse for this is that the emphasis is on the "text narrative", not reference material. That's nonsense; all good medical textbooks have references.

There has been a turnaround of authors in this multi-authored book. The new guys seem to have ignored several changes in the taxonomy of bacteria and viruses, such as the designation of Flavivirus as a Family and the split of Papovavirus into Papillomavirus and Polyomavirus. The new tables still contain the old errors, such as asserting that Hepatitis B is a Family when in fact it belongs to the Hepadnaviridae Family. There are numerous little errors like this that have been carried over from the Fourth Edition; apparently, the new authors cut-and-pasted what looked good without examining it for accuracy.

The stuff that was "trimmed" was not "older and less important information", as stated in the Preface. The editors apparently have figured out that USMLE-obsessed students are more interested in answering test questions than understanding anything, so a lot of viral and bacterial anatomy has been cut. We can now view these entities as more of a black box than something with important innards.

Some of the ambiguous or unclear explanations of the Fourth Edition have been carried over to the Fifth, such as the description of the One Step Growth Experiment, which would be unintelligible were it not for Wikipedia.

I cannot find an errata page for any Lange textbook. This is a Good Thing, since we can now rest assured that there are never any errors in their books. Too bad there isn't a contact form for sending suggestions for improvement for the next edition; this is a really good book, but apparently they don't need the likes of you and me to make it even better. Don't bother sending suggestions to Customer Service; it will be filed away by someone unfamiliar with the word "enzyme".

The Preface references a web site which purportedly contains an "online learning center" with lots of extra stuff, like "additional cases, questions, and study aids". As of this writing, it is vaporware, and I've complained to the publisher. In fact, Lange doesn't even have a reference to this (Fifth) edition up yet. Maybe all this will be in place by the time you read this.

If you don't have the Fourth Edition, you can probably get it very cheap, and I suggest you do so (in addition to buying the Fifth Edition) for the references and the enhanced technical detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book
I had Dr. Hawley as a professor in medical school and I have to say this book is a great buy. The way she breaks things down and gives you exactly what you need to know for the USMLE is fantastic. This book is truly golden and will give you everything you need to know for the USMLE Step 1.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best for reviewing
Before buying this book I had four others on microbiology. The most difficult thing was to decide which approach was better to learn this science - bug parade or according to site of infection?

Well, High-Yield Microbiology removes this problem - it analyzes bugs in both ways and plus another "Comparative Microbiology", in which it compares microbes according to several characteristics. The repetition alone improves learning.

This book is clear and well written, with helpful tables and charts. It is the best to review microbiology. Note REVIEW, you will have to have a textbook and/or go to classes if you actually want to learn.

Thus, in what it aims to be, it is the best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Review Book
Excellent review book for microbiology class or board study. Hits all the high points. Good charts, few helpful diagrams. Nicely organized and easy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of the High Yield Series
What it does right: This is the only book in the HY series the give sufficient detail to clinical cases and treatments. If you know this book, you know micro sufficient for USMLE. Goljan path has some other angles to integrate into you micro studying, but this covers the bulk of the classic microorganism, case presentations, and treatments. Concise and easily readable. The section of Q/A is priceless and sorely lacking in most of the HY titles.

What is does wrong: The book does not flow as well as I would like, but I don't like micro, so that might be part of it lol. Really, I do not have any critical complaints.

Conclusion: Great review for micro. Very good book to acclimate yourself with material before utilizing first aid. You might even find yourself using this book as a reference for more detail in areas that are not clear to you from FA. ... Read more

I bought this book as a reference for the board certification exams in medical technology. It answered every question I needed to find an answer to and so much more. I passed my exams and I'm still using this book. If I need in-depth descriptions of an organism, it's all there. Medical technologists or students, you won't be disappointed with this book.

Well, it is a little dry, but it is a micro text after all. What more can you expect? It was a great price at $50.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for one stop research
This is an excellent reference book. It is a bit much to use as a textbook as it has more more of an encyclopedia feel to it. Most chapters cite about 500 sources but can be as much as 1400 to give you an idea of the extent of the information condensed in this book. Key characteristics of bacteria are listed in charts in each chapter and some identification schemes are provided. This is clearly a text dedicated to bacteria (15 of 24 chapters). The remaining chapters are broader in their scope and cover things such as general microbiology practices, mycology, viruses, and parasitology.

So you can see, this book covers a variety of topics - and is a fantastic introduction to the field of microbiology. The negatives of using this book - if you are a visual learner the diagrams are sub-par at best. Now I'm not talking about the tables, the tables are fantastic. The diagrams are minimal, and not very helpful.I am lucky in that my Micro professor has overheads of the diagrams from a different book that he uses.

The book was received in great condition-- it's a great book, for a great price- exactly what I ordered!

4-0 out of 5 stars Prescott's Microbiology
The book was required for the course, the content was a little to in-depth for an introductory biology course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Required text
This book does an excellent job of going into depth about the topics covered in my class.Several figures give more details than in previous editions. One drawback is that this edition does not have the essays that were in the older edition. Those essays were extremely helpful for making connections for class. Also, this edition is extremely expensive however, amazon was much cheaper than my local bookstore.

1-0 out of 5 stars The WORST seller ever in Amazon
The seller would not send your stuff late and not even that but send you something that is in poor condition. You pay for a lot and even extra and would get a crappy stuff than you expected. ALso if you e-mail he/she would give all the excuse for sending book late and in th end would mock customer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Information overload in an unstructured format
Of all the science texts I have needed to read to date, this textbook is easily the worst. I say this as a solid "A" post-baccalaureate student, and as a former writer/editor in the trade journal business. It's almost impossible to read more than a few paragraphs of this book at a time. As soon as an idea is introduced, the book distracts us with highly esoteric "examples", diagrams, illustrations, breakout boxes, and case studies. Often within these are yet more examples, diagrams, illustrations or breakout text. Sometimes the breakout boxes fill one page and spread onto the adjoining page, where only a paragraph or two of core chapter text is presented thanks to additional diagrams outside the breakout box on what's left of that page. It's all just too much; the sheer abundance of visual and textual data distracts from any kind of presentation of core principles or key concepts that should be imparted to the reader. By contrast I am taking a higher-level genetics class where the book (nearly 300 pages shorter than this one!) is succinct, well-written and far easier to to comprehend (Introduction to Genetic Analysis - Griffiths et al.). Sometimes less really is more, and the Slonczewski text is absolute proof of that axiom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Great book! I've been enjoying the reading. This book has great images and it's just an overall excellent product!

4-0 out of 5 stars Microbiology as a learning tool
Its easy to read sections, clear diagrams, and summary reviews makes this microbiology text book an essential tool when learning about microorganisms. This book was recommended to me by my professor at the University of Minnesota, and was well worth the price. I believe it would be a useful product for anyone learning this subject both in and out of a classroom setting.

1-0 out of 5 stars MISSING PAGES.
The back of the book is simply blank pages, from chapter 18 on.There are also alot of the pages missing within the other chapters. All the even pages are blank from pages 110 until page 179. This is where the pages just go blank.

4-0 out of 5 stars Its over simplified
It is less involved than the over produced book, but is a little under developed in the questions. They are too simplistic as compared to the actual test material.

5-0 out of 5 stars You WILL need this study guide
I usually never opt for the study guide with books, this was required by my school. Very helpful. It condenses all the info of 15 pages into 4 for review and makes it easier to find for the study questions.Micro requires 3 different sources to make a complete picture. If you are only reading the textbook you will miss important info in the study guide.

3-0 out of 5 stars Microbiology Study Guide
I ended up not using this very much for my class. The reviews in the textbook are much more helpful than the study guide.

Product Description
Would you like to bring guest lectures like researchers, physicians, or fellow instructors into you microbiology course? With this third edition of INTRODUCTION TO MICROBIOLOGY you get the perspective of all of those three professionals. John Ingraham, a professor of microbiology at University of California at Davis, and Catherine Ingraham, his daughter and a practicing physician, utilize their experience within a case history approach complemented by a great technology package. Each chapter in INTRODUCTION TO MICROBIOLOGY now consistently begins with a case history, which John Ingraham has found very motivatonal to students who are new to the study ofbasic science. Because Catherine Ingraham studied to become a physician by interviewing patients, determining causes and implementing solutions, she knows mastry comes from high interest human stories rather than clinical presentations. Many of the case histories found in this book are taken from Catherine's experience as a physician. This combination of experiences and talent brings a case-based quality to every lecture and homework session. This unique author team also provides up-to-the-minute currency. Coverage of new microbial "events" such as biological warfare, studied by John and its effects prepared for in Catherine's office, keeps students interested. The authors also highlight reemerging diseases, such as tuberculoses and smallpox. As with previous editions, this book takes a "body systems" organization. Students are exposed to the unknown, the world of the microbes, through the known, and the different parts of their own bodies. And, because art is so important, there is again a multimedia manager with this title, but with more exciting capabilities than ever before. Instructors receive powerful PowerPoint slides for all the illustrations, tables and figures from the text, plus several animations are at your fingertips. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars CD Animations Not Available to Students!!
The content of this book is acceptable and the photos and tables are helpful. But the book indicates that the CD included with the book includes animations of the subject matter.Throughout the book, it encourages you to go to the cd and view the animations. What it does not tell you is that the animations are only available to instructors. It took me six contacts with the book publisher, and lengthy conversations with five uninformed representatives, to find out that I could not get the cd animations.VERY DISAPPOINTING INDEED!I have purchased many science texts that come with animations on cd and it is available to anyone who purchases the book. Why bother to include a cd with the book. The cd that comes with this text is absolutely empty. It only contains a link to the book's website.

Just know that if you purchase this book, the cd is useless to students.

5-0 out of 5 stars informative
I had to read the entire book. It wasn't difficult. Not a reference book, but a good introduction

5-0 out of 5 stars great intro book
I got this book with a Medical Micro book for a class. While the approach of this book is occasionally juvenal (I don't need a little story about a boy getting a puncture wound to explain the immune response), it has been a good fall-back reference as the material is organized differently from the other text.

3-0 out of 5 stars A teacher's perspective
The textbook writing is simple but meanders enough to lose focus. The busy student could benefit from the many tables and figures, but somehow the link between text and graphics is lost in the voluminous chapters. The summaries are point like renditions of the text and do not highlight important material. Likewise the comprehensive self-test questions are not graded according to importance and carry no link back to the text.
Overall, a comprehensive textbook, but lacking the focus and layout for easy adoption and study.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction
This text gives pleanty of pictures and the cases studies help reinforce what the reader is learning in lecture and lab. I did not have to use the CD-Rom, but the lab book that goes with this text was a lot of fun. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated and too bulky for step 1
As a medical student, our Micro course required this book because it had USMLE style questions in it and no one would buy the massive medical micro book that wasn't a review. Okay, so this book is actually out of date on a lot of subjects and doesn't even give accurate information on the pathogenesis, especially the virology and mycology sections. If you are reviewing for the USMLE step 1, this book is WAY to cumbersome to read in the 4-7 weeks that you have to review. If you need a quick brush up, Google "South Carolina Microbiology" and you should find a website that will provide more than enough information for the Step. i.e., save your money, look at the pathmicro site from SC, and buy q-bank!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Immunology Section! Must read for Step 1
I only read the 90 or so pages of this book that covered Immunology as per the recommendation of many other students that had used it solely for that. It is by far the best immunology text I have come across, especially for Step 1 review (on account of the short length of the immuno section) and I own at least 3 immuno books including High Yield, Case Files, and some Lange review of Micro/Immuno book that I do not think are nearly as good. If you are thinking about buying an Immunology book to review for Step 1 or even to use during a med school immunology course, look no further. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superior to "Made Ridiculously Simple" micro review book
My Micro professor writes questions for the USMLE Step 1. I was not doing well on his exams, but this book helped shoot my exam score up by 14%! I had used the "Made Ridiculously Simple" micro review book, but I found it too superficial. It helps to know the "why"; I could never just memorize and regurgitate for an exam. This book is well updated, colored photos are great, well organized and thorough but not to endless detail. *One weak point: the immunology section is disappointing, but I would still recommend it for the micro part.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I had Dr. Chamberlain as my infectious Disease instructor. He is able to make a difficult subject both interesting and entertaining. The format of the book allows for a complete understanding of how infectious microbes effect different organ systems. Together with the easy to undestand text and fantastic color pictures, it makes for one of the best medical microbiology book on the market. Do yourself a favor and do not pass up this book...you will not regret it.
