Product Description
The first book to demonstrate how plants originally considered harmful to the environment actually restore Earth’s ecosystems and possess powerful healing properties

• Explains how invasive plants enhance biodiversity, purify ecosystems, and revitalize the land

• Provides a detailed look at the healing properties of 25 of the most common invasive plants

Most of the invasive plant species under attack for disruption of local ecosystems in the United States are from Asia, where they play an important role in traditional healing. In opposition to the loud chorus of those clamoring for the eradication of all these plants that, to the casual observer, appear to be a threat to native flora, Timothy Scott shows how these opportunistic plants are restoring health to Earth’s ecosystems. Far less a threat to the environment than the cocktails of toxic pesticides used to control them, these invasive plants perform an essential ecological function that serves to heal both the land on which they grow and the human beings who live upon it. These plants remove toxic residues in the soil, providing detoxification properties that can help heal individuals.

Invasive Plant Medicine demonstrates how these “invasives” restore natural balance and biodiversity to the environment and examines the powerful healing properties offered by 25 of the most common invasive plants growing in North America and Europe. Each plant examined includes a detailed description of its physiological actions and uses in traditional healing practices; tips on harvesting, preparation, and dosage; contraindications; and any possible side effects. This is the first book to explore invasive plants not only for their profound medical benefits but also with a deep ecological perspective that reveals how plant intelligence allows them to flourish wherever they grow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read!
This is a must read book for anyone interested in herbal medicine or nature restoration. The whole idea of "invasive" plants is a cultural construct, another example of humans manipulating nature, often to our own detriment. Many plants considered "invasive" are potent healers, both of humans and the earth. As Scott explains, these plants move into disturbed areas and heal the earth. Often, they remain strong for several years until other plants can gain a foothold. The really important issue is: Why are these areas disturbed in the first place? The answer is: Because human activities cause disturbance. It's not a secret that millions of acres of prairie land have disappeared to make way for crops. But the 9000-pound elephant in the room is chemicals: pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. Not only do they make our food, water and air toxic, but they kill the soil. We fail to look under the ground and see what's taking place outside of our immediate vision. Fungi form mutual relations with plant and tree roots and nourish the soil. Chemical companies are destroying life above and below ground. Scott shows that "invasive" plants can clean up some of the toxins and heal the soil, making our food, air and water safer. Unfortunately, due to our lazy and unnatural dependence on chemicals, we aren't looking seriously for alternative solutions to agricultural practices. Scott also draws attention to the parallels in the rhetoric used for both nature and human society: verbal attacks against "invasive" plants mimic those against immigrants. The mentality is the same: We don't want those foreigners on our land. Well, nature does not recognize political boundaries, and zenophobia has no place in either society or nature.

Most societies, especially Western, consider "weeds" as invasive and in some areas, by law, must be removed. For example, the Canada Thistle is considered invasive in Canada and farmers must spray herbicides to kill it or be subjected to harsh fines.Yet, in some parts of the United States it isn't considered an invasive plant.

Timothy Lee Scott, an herbalist and acupuncturist, gives us an in-depth look into the various plants that have entered into our ecosystem. Most of these come from Asia and are considered medicinal in traditional healing there.Yet, once discovered here in the United States, it is considered a weed.Scott addresses issues such as: politics, science of invasions and herbicidal impacts, as well as areas such as ecology, chemistry, and treatment use.

For example, Thistle (aka Canada thistle, California thistle, bull thistle, spear thistle) has "been used in numerous herbal traditions...for thousands of years. The most famous of these is the use of milk thistle as a potent medicinal for liver health and detoxification." (p. 289) He also claims that the "expansive thistles and their seeds make a good substitute for milk thistle."

For each invasive that Scott lists, he adds information about the plant, its description, collection and habitat, medicinal uses, plant chemistry, pharmacological actions, scientific studies, ecological importance, harvesting and preparing, dosage, cautions/contraindications, herb/drug interactions, and references.

"Invasive Plant Medicine" is very thorough and indicates that author Scott did extensive research into this subject.I appreciated the colored pictures of the invasives in the center of the book, and the illustration of each plant in the content area.I encourage readers to think about our environment and accept the medicinal uses of "invasive" plants because indeed they may not be as invasive as some expect us to think they are.In order to sustain a healthy planet we must eliminate the use of harmful chemicals to destroy plants that are beneficial for our health and well-being.

I commend Scott in giving us to become friendly with invasives."Invasive Plant Medicine" is not only a keeper, but a healer. ... Read more

Product Description

Geared to primary care practitioners, The Washington Manual® of Outpatient Internal Medicine focuses on common ambulatory medical problems encountered in each medical subspecialty. The book has a quick-reference format similar to The Washington Manual® of Medical Therapeutics, with a standard chapter template, a bulleted style, numerous tables and figures, and a two-color design. All chapters are written by house staff and faculty at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine.

Coverage includes the traditional internal medicine subspecialties and other areas where problems are frequently seen in the ambulatory setting, such as dermatology, neurology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, and psychiatry. Most subspecialties have separate symptom- and disease-based chapters.

The Washington Manual® is a registered mark belonging to Washington University in St. Louis to which international legal protection applies. The mark is used in this publication by LWW under license from Washington University.

4-0 out of 5 stars For your office
I consider this book as an excellent companion for attending outpatients.
The focus is on the management of the cronic case of the frecuent diseases studied by the internist.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent Handbook for Primary Care Internists
I am an internist who will be returning to outpatient primary care after several years absence. So I wanted to review a handbook that would provide an up-to-date, concise outline of conditions that an office based internist is likely to encounter.I am a fan of the Washington Manual series, and have been using the Washington Manual of Medical Therapeutics since I was an intern many years ago. However, that book is geared more to a hospital based practice. In about 2003, a Washington Manual of Ambulatory Therapeutics came out that was an excellent resource for office based internists, but it has been 7 years since the one and only edition of that book was published and it is now out-dated.

So, I was really looking forward to reading through the first edition Washington Manual of Outpatient Internal Medicine published in April, 2010.Having read through several sections, I am mostly pleased with the format and content. The book's chapters are divided mostly by organ systems, but some diseases such as diabetes mellitus, inflammatory bowel disease, and GERD receive there own chapters. Most disease entities are presented in the common General Principles, Diagnosis, and Treatment sections and the discussion is in a bulleted, outline form.

At over a 1000 pages, I would have expected that this book would be fairly comprehensive in presenting disorders that an internist is likely to encounter in everyday practice, as well as many other rarer conditions about which internists should be knowledgeable. It is not.To provide one glaring example, the book completely omits any discussion of peptic ulcer disease.

There are many other books of this type on the market that are of equal or better utility to clinical practice. For instance, Outpatient and Primary Care, 2010 Edition, is only about a third the length of the Washington Manual, but in some respects is more comprehensive for the disease entities that are covered, especially with respect to treatment options.I also appreciate the fact that Outpatient and Primary Care provides both the generic and trade names for drugs, which this Washington Manual does not.

Overall, this is a good, but not great, manual for practicing clinicians.I would have preferred that Lippincott would have decided to publish a new edition of the Washington Manual of Ambulatory Therapeutics, which I feel was a superior reference for office practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most important texts in your office
I am an attending physician in Emergency Medicine, and through residency and even today, I have used this reference more than any other. It is a must have for anyone in the field. It would be extremely helpful for anyone in primary care as well

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for learning procedures
This is an excellent book.As an ER resident, I have found this book to be invaluable in helping me to understand the procedures that I am trying to learn. This text also does more than just explain how to do the procedures; it also gives plenty of background on the underlying disease processes, the indications for the procedure, etc.
I would also mention that, even though this text is geared toward ER...I think any physician who performs a wide variety of procedures from suturing to intubating to IV access to chest tubes may find this book to be quite useful.Would definitely recommend this book and refer to it quite often myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not only for the ED
I've purchased every edition of this invaluable resource.I do work in a busy, high-acuity ED, but also consider this if you're a family doc in a rural area where you might be called upon to perform a life saving procedure that you haven't seen since residency. Now if they'd just publish a pocket PC edition.......

4-0 out of 5 stars Complete but somewhat dated
As an ER PA I find this large text full of many procedures useful in emergency medicine. However, by todays standards the B&W pictures and drawings are very dated. An alternative worth considering; with better pictures and detailed descriptions would be: Emergency Medicine Procedures by Eric Reichman and Robert Simon.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing reference guide.
This book lays out everything you need to know in a concise, easy to follow format. If only it wasnt so friggin gigantic. So whether you need to run to the office to brush up on a procedure you havent attempted since your second year of residency or you need something heavy to bash the hell out of a Ganglion cyst (please dont actually do that), this is a great tool. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars too much details in the wrong format
NMS Family Medicine is recommended by other students at our school too, except the questions are way too details and do not reflect the shelf exam format. I haven't found a better book but this is definitely not the best book to prepare for the Family Medicine shelf.

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
This question book was practically useless for the family medicine shelf. I would guess that less than 10% of the questions were relevant to the shelf or the family medicine clerkship itself. The questions focus on clinically irrelevant details of common diseases, and many of the answers seemed completely wrong. In addition, the question format was wordy, annoying and very different from the actual exam.

A much better choice would be to review the internal medicine, pediatrics and Ob/Gyn sections of the Kaplan qbook if you are the type of person who uses questions to study. Otherwise Case Files is probably a good choice by itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book at great price
The transaction was easy and I received the book in a reasonable amount of time. The book was in good shape and came just as described.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but may be overkill - 870 difficult questions!
Overall, this family medicine question book represents a decent review for the clerkship and shelf exam. I spent countless hours working through this book and managed to get through it once before the shelf, but I wonder if my time would've been better spent with another resource. Here are some things I noticed:

1. The cover clearly states "nearly 500 all new questions", but I counted about 870 questions! While more questions are welcome, it is definitely hard to master so many in a 6 week rotation. Had I known the true number of questions before, I would've considered purchasing the new Pretest Family Medicine book instead.

2. The style of questions does not resemble the nbme shelf exam questions (my subjective opinion after taking the shelf)

3. Some questions require a very detailed level of knowledge - to the point of splitting hairs to get the question right. Even after looking things up in several textbooks, there were some questions that I still could not find the answer to. I sometimes wondered if these were valid teaching points.

4. The answer explanation format could be better. Instead of listing each answer choice separately and stating why each is correct/incorrect, there is a paragraph. It was sometimes difficult to know which sentence went with each choice because there was no transition from one answer choice explanation to the next.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I've used in medical school!!!!
I got this book because I needed something to study for my M3 clerkship shelf exam and I was told Blue Prints was not good and there is no First Aid. It took me a long time to go through all of the questions and extensive explanations but it was totally worth it. Some of the questions I had on the shelf were almost identical to those in the book. I have since loaned my copy out to several people with rave reviews. This has been my favorite book in medical school so far! ... Read more

World-renowned healer Donna Eden is able to literally see the body's energy keypoints and meridians. In Energy Medicine, she tells readers how they, too, can visualize these energy systems, determine the causes of physical and psychological problems based on the state of these energies, and devise highly effective treatments to remedy specific ailments and injuries. This is the only interactive guide that shows how you can work with energy to strengthen the immune, circulatory, lymphatic, and respiratory systems; alleviate pain, emotional stress, and depression; and improve memory and learning skills.

In health conferences throughout the world, Eden consistently exhilarates and amazes her audiences. Blending intuitive genius with a profound grasp of how the body functions as an energy system, Donna Eden's unique approach to energy medicine integrates Eastern, Celtic, and Western healing arts.

This alternative-medicine self-help guide promises to teachyou to help heal yourself and others using the body's own naturalenergies. Building on such diverse concepts as acupuncture andtherapeutic touch, Donna Eden lays out a practical framework inEnergy Medicine for flushing out and recharging the body'ssystems.

"This book will show you how to work with theelectromagnetic and more subtle energies that give your body life,"Eden writes, along with her husband, psychologist DavidFeinstein. "These energies form the foundation of your health."

Forinstance, if your head aches or feels clouded, energy may bestagnating there, so do the "crown pull" to release it. The book givesa detailed description of how to do this and other energy-fixingexercises, and provides time estimates and illustrations for doing themaneuvers.

Eden, who has practiced energy medicine for more than 20years and has given classes around the world, also relates storiesabout some of her clients, including those with cancer and chronicpain. While Eden says people can help themselves and others with thetechniques in the book, she urges them to seek professional care aswell.

Energy Medicine includes chapters on various energysystems, ranging from the meridians to the chakras, thebasic grid to the strange flows, and chapters on how such systemsrelate to pain and illness. It also includes an appendix listingorganizations and Internet sites for other forms of alternativemedicine, like naturopathy and qigong. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative, extremely helpful
Although Donna was born with a gift and talent to read people's energy and see a clear picture of what is going on, she is also able to share with us very grounded techniques to help those who have not been born with that talent.I have been using her 'meridian tracing' methods on my clients for over 10 years and find it extremely helpful!Thank you donna for your work and sharing your talent with us all!

5-0 out of 5 stars Healthcare Future for Americans
I cannot recommend this book enough, especially to Americans. As we all know, Americans have created a pretty unhealthy lifestyle for themselves. Most work too much, creating too much stress that is harmful to their bodies, leaving too little time for shopping and cooking healthy foods, forcing dependence on unhealthy fast foods or convenience foods and resulting in too little opportunities for exercise, all resulting in an increase in health problems all around. Unfortunately, this is about to be complicated by 'universal healthcare' (cough, cough) and there needs to be a shift in how Americans handle their healthcare needs! Energy Medicine holds the answers! Some may argue this is all placebo effect and while this may be true, a placebo effect is still an effect & that is more than many of us will have pretty soon. Read. Reread. Practice. Repeat. This is the future of healthcare.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book you need to begin learning about energy medicine
Recently, I became interested in energy medicine and this book was recommended to me. It is a book I have now read four times. What I most appreciate is that manner in which Donna Eden explains energy medicine in a way that is very inviting and very easy to understand (rather than being too technical or too new-age). I also appreciated the simply exercises one can do to gt acquainted with energy as well as the numerous illustrations.

I have checked out other books on the subject. I feel as though this one is a must-have and bound to be a classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource on Energy Healing
I bought this book as a replacement for one that I loaned out and never got back.Donna Eden's book on Energy Medicine is a great resource for any energy healer to have as it is full of important information. I have been healing with vibrational energies since 1995. I am trained in a number of energy healing modalities, teach several energy healing modalities and recommend this book to anyone interested in healing themselves or others in a very natural, non intrusive manner.

Product Description

The impact of nutritional medicine has had a dramatic and controversial--but documented--impact on the lives of Dr.Strand's patients and can now change readers' lives too.

When Dr. Ray Strand found himself in a losing battle, unable to successfully treat his wife who had suffered chronically with pain and fatigue, he agreed to try the regimen of nutritional supplements that a neighbor suggested. Much to his surprise, his wife's condition began to improve almost immediately. That amazing turn of events led him to dedicate himself to researching alternative therapies in medicine, particularly in the arena of nutritional supplements.

Dr. Strand's illumination of the body's silent enemy-oxidative stress-will astound you. But, more importantly, his research will equip you to protect or reclaim your nutritional health, possibly reversing disease and preventing illness.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Shows How All the Pieces Fit Together
A colleage lent me her copy of this book, and I was quite impressed by the depth and breadth of this author's knowledge of how the different body systems work and how specific nutrients affect each.He mentions a number of conditions (macular degeneration, diabetes, prediabetes, etc) and recommends supplementation specific to each.He cites clinical research and doesn't just make unsubstantiated claims. Great book for anyone who wants to understand how nutrition affects health.

1-0 out of 5 stars What Your Doctor Doesn't Know About Nutritional Medicine May be Killing You
I ordered this product on 4/13/2010 and still have not received it as of yet and it is now 5/15/1020. I have contacted the company and have gotten no response. I am very dissatisfied in the company.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth Reading
Ray Strand's "What You Doctor Doesn't Know . . . " is very helpful in explaining basic nutritional health issues we face today. He uses some helpful analogies as well as science, studies and charts to help explain how free radicals can cause cellular damage and what can be done to prevent or repair this damage. He explains why simply "eating right" is not enough to reverse damage that already exists. He even offers some basic guidelines for which supplements can aid in alleviating various illnesses (wish he included migraines). His personal story as a physician who could seemingly do nothing for his wife's debilitating illness and his journey of personal exploration in to supplements is quite winning.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Your Doctor Doesn't Know About Nutritional Medicine May Be Killing You
Excellent book written by a physician who questions the doctor/pharmacy relationship in medicine.Medicine today is steered by money and not a real quest for medical truth. This is a must read book for everyone.I got mine at Amazon.Recommended.

Book Review:
"What Your Doctor doesn't know about Nutritional Medicine May Be Killing You" by Doctor Ray D. Strand, M.D.
Dr. Strand educates readers that the oxidative stress, the process that causes iron to rust or a cut apple to turn brown, is the root cause for coronary artery disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, macular degeneration, cataracts, Alzheimer's dementia, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and the rheumatoid arthritis. Those chronic degenerative diseases covered most major disease known to mankind and are responsible for most people suffering or dying.
One of my biggest surprises is that cholesterol is not the culprit behind heart disease; the inflammation of blood vessels is.This is new from what we have been educated.
Our own body's immune systems are the best defense against a chronic degenerative disease - not the drugs doctors can prescribe.High quality nutritional Supplements proved to enhance our body immune, nature antioxidant defense and nature repair system.
I had heart disease which nearly caused a fatal heart attack!I had eye problems which four leading eye doctors told me there is no cure. And every cold season, I have throat infection, fever; running nose & cough that may also led to Pneumonia.Following Dr. Strand's "Preventive Medicine & Complementary Medicine" advices, I find fish oil with rich Omega III and high quality Nutritional Supplements are very helpful for all my three medical problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good IM book
This book is very good in terms of its simplicity and very well summarized contents

4-0 out of 5 stars good book
Concise review with good enough details. Easy to read with well laid out design and print.

5-0 out of 5 stars What are you using it for
great book, just depends on what are you using it for,my specialty is not internal medicine, but taking the USMLE CK and step 3 entails much knowledge for internal medicine , this book is very useful and conclusive for this level of knowledge , perhaps the book might be inadequate for an internist who reads Harrison for breakfast :) LOL , so it all depends on your prospectives

the lay out is the favorite first aid lay out with a lot of tables (may be too much ! ) with the side margins notes

the bad written chapters
1- geriatrics
2- critical care

chapters that could be improved
1- cardiology
2- endocrinology ( a big mess with cushing syndrome )
3- ambulatory care

chapters need to be added
1- sports medicine

overall for a non internist like me , i find it the most useful and least painful for a rapid review ( its a review don't expect an uptodate or MKSAP level of details here )

for the ABIM I'll leave that to the pros in this area.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sweating the Boards
I got this boards review along with the John Hopkin's one.I looked at several topics in both and found the John Hopkin's to be a little more in depth and easier to get through (better charts, pictures, etc.).I'll probably go over some of the most difficult diseases in both texts.Though Ferri's Practical Guide to the Care of the Medical Patient is really for residents on the wards, it has always been one of my favorite books since I was a medical student/resident and it works as a great refresher for the boards that you can carry anywhere with you.The other books are bulky and heavy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Review Book
I've been using this book for the past few weeks in conjunction with the new MKSAP 14 questions. Thus far just about everything the MKSAP has tested can be found in the book. Its very easy to read, high yield and very well priced. The only complaint is the index. Like all the rest of the First Aid series, its horrible. That aside, this book is a great find. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I purchased this bood as part of the requirments for my Masters degree in food safety.I feel it is very well written and covers the points very well with many examples.Every word is of importance and necessary. For a study book for epidemiology - this is a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gold book!!
HENNEKENS is a very didatic book in Epidemiology Methodology, easy and simple to read and understand and very complete. All advanced courses in Epidemiology must recomend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quite engrossing for a small textbook
This book is a clear, concise introduction to the use of epidemiology in medicine. It incorporates modern ideas in epidemiological thinking, providing an overview that is up-to-date and thorough. It delivers a lot of information without being dry, and is engrossing enough to read straight through instead of being another textbook to thumb through.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant introduction to medical epidemiology
Although having graduated some time ago I just keep returning to this well written and crystal-clear undergraduate book on basic epidemiology. This explains clearly also the most basic and important statistical approaches in analyzing data, although leaving multivariate analyses mostly out. However, that might be considered as a virtue as well beacuse the book stays at a very simple level and thus not scare you off it.

5-0 out of 5 stars For any student on epidemiology and biostatistics
One should not be afraid regarding the edition (1987). It is still a powerfull tool for any student on epidemiology or biostatistics. Despite being not a huge book, it is comprehensive enough for students of any leveland perhaps as a companion to established professionals. You can read itpage by page as a novel or search it for details in the planing andexecution of an epidemiological research. The author is well known for hiswork on important trials in medicine and that makes him an expert on boththeorethical and on a practical basis. ... The cutting edge of medicine today is not to be found in invasive therapies like drugs and surgeries. It is in the disciplines that used to be regarded as "soft" medicine: prayer, intention, energy healing, acupressure, and similar therapies. Overwhelming evidence from hundreds of scientific studies are showing that these safe, non-invasive approaches are often more effective, sometimes many times more effective, than conventional medicine. Two of the pioneers in the field, Dr. Norman Shealy, founder of the American Holistic Medical Association and world-famous neurosurgeon, and Dr. Dawson Church, one of the foremost writers and researchers in vibrational healing, and the editor or author of many books on the subject, explain the fundamentals of energy medicine, its many applications to common ailments, and the latest scientific research. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Ah ha... so good to see more alternative medical works on the power of the mind!
Soul medicine as primary care? Yes. You will have to read how this can happen.
Energy healing starts with opening your mind.
Energy follows thoughts and intentions are everything.
Shealy, a neurosurgeon and Dawson, a clinical researcher, explains how future medicine can be more about the mind and spirit and less about medications!
This book is well researched, well written and encapsulates the history of energy healing, its mechanisms, and a "how to" self-help tool for your own personal growth. There is a fabulous chapter on how acupuncture works in electromagnetic terms.
"Magic precedes science." I was fascinated to read about outstanding healers of our time in conjunction with medical research proving the effectiveness of energy trials.
The book has many clinical and case studies that will educate you, and keep you turning pages for more information. It's packed with interesting and empowering information to help you learn more.
I thought I knew a lot about the mind, body, spirit, but was happy to discover new variations on the theme.
This book is useful to the layperson, the medical community and anyone discouraged and dissatisfies with their western medicine protocols.
Life can be so much more and this book discusses how and why.
Great read!
This was a complimentary review copy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Be careful of Taurine & caffeine
I haven't finished the book and generally find it very enlightening.

A statement that Taurine is deficient in 86% of people suffering from depression led me to stock up on it, since this has been a life-long problem.Since you need to take it on an empty stomach, I took it with my morning coffee.WRONG! My blood pressure went through the roof. Check the internet re: the energy drinks that contain Taurine & caffeine. That says it all. If you're going to take Taurine, take it apart from caffeine!

In North America, where there is much talk of the healthcare crisis, we clearly need a new paradigm. Many cultures today, including some branches of so-called Western medicine, are beginning to recognize that healing the body is essentially connected with healing the mind, the emotions and the spirit. Research into the ancient history of sacred healing explains how this works and how the contemporary healer can apply these principles, often reducing the need for invasive surgeries and powerful drugs.

As a cancer survivor, I found Soul Medicine to be an inspiring book that offers hope as it describes energy healing and its applications for the average reader. It is a particularly encouraging read for anyone who is grappling with chronic illness, simply interested in good health, or who is care taking a suffering friend or family member. Western medicine has limits and a new consciousness can often take us beyond those limits. Through their own clinical examples, authors Shealy and Church, a neurosurgeon and health researcher respectively, show us how we can all access such healing and improve our lives. They also cite clinical studies that show improved recovery time and greater instances of complete healing in surgical patients who are given various forms of energy healing, once their allopathic treatment is completed.

In spite of the research and thousands of anecdotal accounts, the authors point out that Western medicine is slow to recognize or even acknowledge what many patients know to be true - that the body is made to heal and that each of us has an "inner blueprint" that will take us back to physical health, if the mind and spirit receive the right kind of support. One section of the book is devoted to actions the authors believe will accelerate the pace of change and how soul medicine will look in the future.

They write:

"The pendulum has only begun its swing in the direction of soul medicine. The forces adding momentum to its movement are the exhaustion of the old system, its impossible costs, its inability to treat many systemic conditions, its lack of soul, and the enthusiasm of patients for soul medicine."

This book, while definitely engaging for the average reader, is actually the prescription for our healthcare crisis. It ought to be required reading for our government health departments, doctors and medical students as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Herbal PDR
Had one before and loaned it to someone who must have really liked it because it never came home.Very comprehensive book with some scientific evidence thrown in to the homeopathic idea.Good all around reference.

2-0 out of 5 stars Longevity is not its best quality
While the content of the book is great (good reference guide), the materials its made out of are a joke. I buy books for life, this book will last a few years at best. Given its cost, I am considering returning it and finding a digital copy. I love to have quality hard copy books in my personal library, but this is made from some cardboardish material, and the pages are newsprint. The ink smears if your hands arent bone dry. THe pages tear VERY EASILY as you turn pages. The quality of production is very poor, and in no way justifies the price. FAIL.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I assumed for a PDR
Sure it has tons of info and it's a thick book from a respectable medical authority? but there is a lot of missing information, as well as info about herbs that aren't even used today!!! The herbs that are well known, and well studied, have good info though, but then again, they would have good info outside of this book. I wasn't that impressed, i guess. It wouldn't be my first reference, i suggest looking at in person first, especially if you're already an herbologist or herbal enthusiast.....

For such a short book, this is surprisingly full of imformation. One of the best emergency medicine books I have ever seen. I would consider this a must have for any practicing EM specialist. This book covers a majority of the very high risk cases that we see. The best part is continual coverage of hazards in over reliance on so called "classic symptoms." Product Description

Proven effective by scientific research and presented here by Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa and Cameron Stauth, the practice of Medical Meditation revolutionizes the healing process. By balancing and regenerating the body's ethereal and physical energies through simple meditations, Medical Meditation unites the mind, body, and spirit into a powerful triad.

Each Medical Meditation here has a specific physiological effect, targeting afflictions from arthritis to ulcers to cancer. Dr. Khalsa details the five unique attributes that endow this type of meditation with far more power than standard meditation. The combination of special postures and movements; exact positioning of the hands and fingers; particular mantras; specific breathing patterns; and a unique focus of concentration can change your entire biochemical profile, easing you into a calm, healing state. Practiced in conjunction with conventional or alternative medical treatments, cutting-edge Medical Meditation activates the healing force within you.Amazon.com Review
Long-term meditators experience 80 percent less heart disease and50 percent less cancer than nonmediators, according to a large body ofstudies. Meditation has been shown to improve sleep and reduce chronic pain. Not all meditation is equally effective, however. Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D., has developed a form of advanced meditation he calls "Medical Meditation," which "more fully addresses every element of our physical and ethereal makeup... a full-service approach." Medical Meditation is an adaptation of kundalini yoga combined with meditation, using specific breathing patterns, posture and movements, mantras, and mental focus.

Different Medical Meditation focus on different physiological benefits forspecific conditions, so once you've learned the basics, you can choose aspecific Medical Meditation for high blood pressure, to improvedigestion, or to strengthen the immune system or the heart, for example.Line drawings illustrate the postures, and Khalsa's stories about hispatients are inspiring and involving.

Meditation as Medicine is not a brisk read or a "read-today-do-tomorrow" guide, however. Be prepared to immerse your mind in a study of chakras, mantras, breathing exercises, movement exercises, poses, and meditations--and discipline yourself to practice Khalsa's techniques patiently. Are the benefits worth all the work involved? Khalsa thinks so: "For the ill and injured, Medical Meditation is not a problem. It's a solution."

Khalsa is both a physician and a yogi. He is board certified in anesthesiology, pain management, and antiaging medicine, and president and medical director of the Alzheimer's Prevention Foundation. 5-0 out of 5 stars On Time Delivery
One of my major complaints with some of the Amazon vendors is they send things by pony express. This is one who gets things out on time.Book also was in great condition.

1-0 out of 5 stars Completely unreliable
Try the Kundalini exercises in this book, if you are interested, but please don't believe anything this author says. He just make things up. Really! For instance, he says that the brain is just millimeters away from the upper palate (no, the nasal cavities are above the palate; the brain is higher up, behind the eyes and forehead). He says that "Even in the vacuum of space, sound waves vibrate to the outer recesses of the universe, toward infinity." (Say what?! Sound can't travel without an atmosphere.) He says that neurons divide and "all the cells in the brain are replaced every year." (Complete nonsense--neurons don't divide like other cells.)

If there were just a few errors, and they didn't have anything to do with his main theses, it wouldn't be too bad, though kind of pitiful. But these falsehoods are just a few of the most obvious. And each of them is there in order to support the author's beliefs, to bring the authority of science to his book.

How does he get away with this? Why do publishers, reviewers, and readers support him? I don't know, but, please--people!-- don't be suckers. There may be some merit to the practices he describes, but this book is a farce.

I tend to highlight important parts of my favorite books; this book has so many highlights that it's just crazy.....a MUST READ!

This is an excellent translation.Although it may not be up to scholastic
standards, it is easy to read and understand.Ni has his commentary
integrated with the translation so reading the text flows very smoothly.
I've read many of the books on traditional Chinese medicine that are

information to be a book in itself: it is the source-work, after all.
Thank you for this excellent translation, Dr. Ni.

Its a great book to explain in English the translations of yellow emperor...easy to follow

4-0 out of 5 stars Classically oriented, yet contemporarily relevant
First off I would like to address a point made earlier by another reviewer who called into question Mr. Ni's background in classical Chinese Medicine by stating that he is not trained in Taiwan.I am not sure where the impression is given that Taiwan is the only place where classical Chinese medicine can be learned, but it is erroneous. Mr. Ni is the product of generations of family physicians and who's father is incidently a classical taoist teacher/master of esteemed lineage, so one may rightly assume his training was very classical.Further, Mr. Ni begins his introduction by stating that he never intended a word for word translation but rather a clinically useful text that conveys the thought and intent of the original text in terms that would be more readily accesible to those who are not scholars of ancient Chinese literature. This he does exceptionally well.I have read every translation (and incidently attempted a few of my own) of this classical text and I feel this is by far the best. While not a translation it is the most clinically useful of all of the texts translated to date.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Medicine
Well translated and easy to understand the concepts for anyone not familiar with chinese medicine and thought.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best we have.
As an graduate student who has worked on translating the Huangdi Neijing Suwen, I have had the opportunity to place this translation side-by side with most of the others currently in print. This is one of the best we have. The Neijing is often arcane and difficult to penetrate because of opaque language, and it is invariably read with a later commentary alongside to assist in understanding. Ni has provided the commentary and translation integrated on the same page. No, this is not a word-for-word translation, but it does capture the gist of the text and explain how it is understood in contemporary clinical settings more effectively than any other English translation currently available. Until there is a critical academic edition of the text, this is probably as good as it gets. Clinicians will probably prefer this over an academic translation anyway as it smoothes out many of the original's rough edges and internal contradictions, and applies the passages to Chinese medical theory as it is understood today. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Only rcvd 1 book of 2-volume set!
This is a 2-volume set; unfortunately, I only received 1 volume. I had to return the book and now will have to wait for a refund before I can re-purchase and hopefully get both volumes this time. I am very unsatisfied with this purchase and now have to wait even longer to receive the books that I really need for a class. Big inconvenience. ... Read more

      Product Description
Decision making in health care means navigating through a complex and tangled web of diagnostic and therapeutic uncertainties, patient preferences and values, and costs. In addition, medical therapies may include side effects, surgery may lead to undesirable complications, and diagnostic technologies may produce inconclusive results. In many clinical and health policy decisions it is necessary to counterbalance benefits and risks, and to trade off competing objectives such as maximizing life expectancy vs optimizing quality of life vs minimizing the required resources. This textbook plots a clear course through these complex and conflicting variables. It clearly explains and illustrates tools for integrating quantitative evidence-based data and subjective outcome values in making clinical and health policy decisions. An accompanying CD-ROM features solutions to the exercises, PowerPoint® presentations of the illustrations, and sample models and tables. ... Read more
