Product Description

The recent outbreak of disease caused by a novel H1N1 virus has focused global attention on the threat of a new influenza pandemic. Recent years have also seen unprecedented outbreaks of avian influenza A viruses. In particular, highly pathogenic H5N1 viruses have not only resulted in widespread outbreaks in domestic poultry, but have been transmitted to humans resulting in numerous fatalities. The rapid expansion in the geographic distribution of these novel viruses raises the risk that such a virus could cause a global pandemic with high morbidity and mortality.

An effective influenza vaccine represents the best approach to prevent and control such an emerging pandemic. However, current influenza vaccines are directed at existing seasonal influenza viruses, which have limited antigenic relationships to the newly emerging virus strains.

Concerns about pandemic preparedness have greatly stimulated research activities to develop effective vaccines for pandemic influenza viruses, and to overcome the limitations inherent in current approaches to vaccine production and distribution. These limitations include the use of embryonated chicken eggs as the substrate for vaccine production; which is time-consuming and could involve potential biohazards in growth of new virus strains. Other limitations... more on

Product Description
Despite extensive efforts to control it, malaria is still one of the most devastating infectious diseases worldwide. This book, now in its second edition, provides a broad and up-to-date overview of the rapidly expanding field of malaria immunology and its importance in the control of this disease. The first section deals with the malaria parasite and its interactions with both the vertebrate host and the mosquitoes which transmit the disease. In the second part, the mechanisms of immunity and their regulation by environmental and genetic factors are discussed. Finally, this volume contains several chapters on malaria vaccine development, describing the application of the most recent vaccine technologies as well as ongoing and planned vaccine trials. Authored by well-recognized experts, this volume not only demonstrates the rapid progress being made in the search for vaccines against malaria, but also broadens our understanding of immunity to infection in general. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Experience
Hi it was nice experience overall.
I wanted this book since long time. New edition was expensive and did not think that it would too different from the old one. So instead of going for new one i went for old one. Its condition is new.
Thanks for being prompt in sending.
thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars A real gem
People often make the mistake of hitting the bigger books with the hope that they will gain a more complete understanding of a subject. However the problem with such an approach (particularly when beginning a subject) is that more often than not, one loses sight of the key concepts and broad principles. This where i feel this book is a gem. The strength of this book is that each chapter succinctly provides you with all the main points you need to know about each subtopic. In this way you are given a solid basis and contextual understanding, enabling you to gain a deeper appreciation of immunology from larger texts.
At the start of each immunol topic in your course, read the corresponding chapter in this book first, then use your lecture notes or larger texts to fill the gaps/details.

This happens to be one of a very few review books i've kept in my extensive library.

Product Description
Fungal immunology, an expanding field of research, studies the interaction between fungi and the immune system. Modulated immunity as well as evasive mechanisms played by fungi all contribute to the chronicity and reoccurrence of fungal infections. Hypersensitivity to various fungal elements plays a major role in the pathogenesis of many diseases. This book will serve as a comprehensive review of all known immune mechanisms for common medically important fungal pathogens. Its novelty lies in the organization: Rather than chapters devoted to specific fungi, chapters are organized by organ system. All other texts in the field, which are now quite old, are arranged according to specific fungi. Organization by body system rather than fungi is important because one particular fungus can have a different effect on defense mechanisms in different parts of the body. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars readable, memorable
Uses text and pictorals to convey similar points.Brief chapters will actually be read. Not comprehensive, but appendices are good, lacks technique section.Abbas's former associates are in some controvery right now, over FACS published.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reader
The text has excellent pictures and does a good job of relating components of the immune system. Its brief text, excellent pictures and summaries work well for medically oriented students who are trying gain a big picture of how the immune system works.Highlighting allows students to identify the most important component in each paragraph/page.It might not be as good of a textbook for an undergraduate course or a graduate course as it doesn't follow the traditional lecture format.

3-0 out of 5 stars Best used for cramming!
I was required to buy this book for my 3rd year immunology course, but had heard great things about Janeways Immunobiology so bought that as well. Well, i was really glad i did because, with the exception of Abbas' graphics, especially the cell-cell interactions, Janeways book is significantly better. The language used in this book is rushed and confusing that resulted in me, more times than not, reaching for the trusted Janeway (which I now dubb 'The Bible'). I would only recommend Abbas's Basic immunology for those who need to cram for an exam in a very short time. For all else, if you really like immunology and like Abbas' way with his pictures, 'Cellular and Molecular Immunology' also by Abbas would be better, or even better Janeways 'Immunobiology'.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too wordy to understand
This book has great information in it BUT it is so poorly organized and written that a reader can't absorb it.The book is so repetitive and wordy that the key points are often obscured. The diagrams are the saving grace of the book -- these are well-drawn and easy to understand.I resorted to looking at the diagrams and reading the chapter intros and summaries to try and get what I needed out of the book. However, that wasn't enough and I got so frustrated with an immuno final exam looming that I purchased another book. I recommend looking elsewhere especially if you are new to immunology. ... Product Description
The aim of the issue is to describe and explain the importance of the chemokine system in hematology. The chemokine system is probably important for many aspects of normal as well as malignant hematopoiesis. A major focus is the development and treatment of hematologic malignancies, including the immunobiology of stem cell transplantation. The present reviews illustrate that chemokines can be involved in leukemogenesis. The chemokine system is also important both for the crosstalk between malignant cells and their neighbouring nonmalignant stromal cells (including endothelial cells) as well as for immunoregulation in patients treated with allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Thus, chemokines are important both for the pathogenesis and treatment of hematological diseases. ... Read more

Visual Mnemonics for Microbiology and Immunology uses carton drawings that make material easier to learn with tremendous recall months later.

Laurie Marbas, a third year medical student at Texas Tech UniversityHealth Sciences Center, developed this series using "conceptdiagramming" to shorten her study time and help her recall thefacts. Classmates using these drawings reported improved testscores. Students suggested she published her drawings to help otherstudents.

Each page is formatted with plenty of space for notes and reminders, and some students color the organisms for better recall. Visual Mnemonics for Microbiology and Immunology includes sections on parasitology, bacteriology, mycology, virology, and immunology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Visual Mnemonics for Microbiology & Immunology
I love all the visual Mnemonics books by Laurie L. Marbas. The micro/immuno is one of my favorites. The virus section is excellent, as are many other areas. If you are a visual learner, this is an absolute must have book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is great, and I used it for my regular micro class and while studying for Step 1 and found it extremely useful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice
I just finished Step 1 and I can honestly say that these drawings were a life saver.I could answer 90% of the questions from quick recall from these drawings.I would recommend them to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clever
I truly enjoyed studying with this book. It is a unique way to memorize tons of material.I also added other drawings on top of the original drawings. You won't be able to forget these great illustrations and they are fast once you get the hang of it. I only wish I had the rest of the series sooner.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book knows its stuff
I bought this book wanting to study undergraduate immunology before I took the upcoming class. This book, however, is definitely not for beginners. It assumes you know certain terminology going into it.Regularly, you will stumble upon bold words like "low-affinity Fc(gamma)RIII receptors" with little explanation. There is a great deal of knowledge in this book.If you have your basic background, then I would recommend this book.During/After the class, I expect this book to be more helpful. ...
