1-0 out of 5 stars This is a Rip-Off Scam
I am a fourth year university student preparing to take the Biochem/Cell Bio GRE Subject Test.I ordered this book thinking that it was a work-book and stugy guide.I was under the impression that this volume would contain multiple sample tests along with study materials in the individual subject areas. At over $90, plus shipping, I was expecting a comprehensive review like the workbooks published by Barron's for the SAT.

To say I was disappointed when I recieved this book is a gross understatement. Its not even a book, it is a 60 PAGE BOOKLET.[...]This booklet contains just ONE full-size subject test, and not much more. The sample test occupies the bulk of the booklet, the remaining 16 pages offer no viable insight as to how you should study for this test, or any valuable tips to get you ahead. Examples of the "advice" contained in this useless booklet includes, "A general review of you undergrad cirriculum is the best preparation," Gee; thanks.

You can obtain a sample test for FREE when you register for your subject test.Do yourself a favor and save your 90 bucks, you can get everyting contained in this lousy booklet AT NO CHARGE.A no-name company called BookoRama in Pennsylvania billed my debit card for almost A HUNDRED DOLLARS.When the booklet arrived, it did not come with any kind of invoice or receipt, just a slip of paper that read "ALL SALES FINAL."It might as well have said "YOU GOT F*****"There is no hope for a refund. On top of it all, to add insult to injury, the list price on the back cover reads: $9.00 US!!!

I got screwed out of my hard earned cash for a worthless, nine dollar booklet.Take it from me; dont order this trash. The only way to study for this test is with your old Biochem, Cell and Genetics textbooks; NOT by dropping over 90 dollars for this SCAM.

5-0 out of 5 stars These test questions are not available elsewhere
The two most recent reviewers have suggested that this book is the same as the PDF file on ets.org. Although I'm sure they were trying to be helpful, that information is false.

The file you can download from ETS is an electronic copy of the same sample booklet that you get in the mail (for free) when you register for the exam.

The published book itself follows the same format (test info, outline of topics, sample test, scoring). However, it is a totally different set of test questions.

For example, page 1 of the test on the ETS website includes questions on: RNA molecules that exhibit catalytic activity; the conversion of pyruvate to oxylate; identifying a particular hormone given a description of its function; oxydative phosphorylation; a general question on enzyme catalyzation; and the turnover of molecular components through the plasma membrane.

Page 1 of the published test guide (the book for sale here) includes questions on: the importance of phospholipids as consituents of cell membranes; the stabilization of folded states of globular proteins; the ionic strength of .5 molar MgCl(2); the most efficient substrate of an enzyme; the terminal electron acceptor for noncyclic electron flow during the light reactions of photosynthesis; the most effective method for isolation of secretory vesicles from a cell lysate; the function of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (of five listed functions, you have to pick the one that's incorrect); communication among the cisternae of the Golgi complex; and theoretical implications fo the resolving power of light microscopes.

As you can see, they are NOT the same exam.

Both the ets.org PDF file and the published book include 180 questions. Either of them should give you a good idea of how you would do on the real exam.

However, if you can get a hold of the published book (which ETS has stopped making), you have twice as many questions to study from. If you use the actual questions to look up topics, then the bigger pool of sample questions you have, the better. Some people aren't just satisfied with knowing they got a correct answer; they make sure they can identify all the terms and concepts in the *wrong* answers as well.

I think the printed study guide is useful. The two reviewers who say it's not useful haven't even looked at it; they just "heard" it was the same as the PDF file on the website.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
I bought this book thinking it was a review similar to those for the General GRE exam, I thought wrong. This book is a bound version of a sample test that you can download from the ETS website along with the "helpful" hints that the ETS provides.Don't bother wasting your time and money trying to get a copy of this book, you can download the whole thing as a PDF at the ETS website.

1-0 out of 5 stars $250!
Someone is trying to sell one of these books, used, for $250.

I downloaded a practice test online at gre.org

I hear that its the same information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for the GRE subject test
This is a wonderful resource for the biochemistry, Cell and Molecular biology subject test. The only other things you need to ace this subjecy test would be a good biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology and genetics texts and loads of time to study. I highly recommend this book for anybody hoping to get a good score in the GRE. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars At Last
I am so thrilled that at last there is a book such as this explaining how we as humans are what we are. That it is not our genetics that determine who we are but our environment even from our time in the womb. As a practitioner who practises NET NeurEmotional Technique it is so good to see it explained in a scientific way that the public can now read about. Epigenetics is truly the path to healing of the future.
Dr Gunta Krumins-Caldwell author of On Silver Wings

3-0 out of 5 stars The Control Mechanism is What?
Lipton's initial presentation of a string of fun discoveries from the history of science is suddenly interrupted by a clunker of a punch line.

Lipton lost me when he stated on disc #2 that the control mechanism for cellular membranes is obviously field broadcasts from the eternal beings of the spirit world.

I know he is mistaken here because the results of my own laboratory experiments clearly show that the control mechanism for cellular membranes is either 1) God, 2) The Flying Spaghetti Monster, 3) Aliens or 4) Pokemon.

I will read more of Lipton's work when he finds a way to scientifically test his hypothesis.Perhaps then he can disprove mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Material
This is a wonderful, clear explanation of important biological functions that are on the cutting edge of biology. Due to the new (and not mainstream) nature of the material it is fascinating even for someone with extensive knowledge of the field. Due to the simple and clear delivery it is fascinating for my 10 year old son as well. I have been listening to it in the car and he loves it! He now knows and brings information to his science teacher. The message is enlightening and empowering and I highly recommend this to anyone with any interest in science or the power of positive thinking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cell Intelligence
Bruce Lipton is a brilliant scientist who has explained in an easily understood way the relationship between our brains and the intelligence that permeates every cell in our bodies and shows us that our beliefs are a very powerful part of who we are and we have an inherent intelligence that is part of us and we do have control of our own general health. Dr Lipton also gives clients the knowledge that we are more than we think we are.
The Wisdom of Your Cells: How Your Beliefs Control Your Biology

4-0 out of 5 stars Positive Thinking Can Be a Matter of Life or Death, cellularly speaking
Dr.Bruce Lipton pulls back the curtain of our physical being and provides profound insights into the connection that many people have spoken to over time: "Whether you think you can or you can't, you are right." Henry Ford. Be very careful what thoughts you entertain because your body has the ability to listen VERY closely and respond according to your beliefs. The meaning I attach to any situation makes ALL the difference in terms of the outcome. Dr. Lipton's ability to make the profound simple is unmatched, he is a teacher who has the GIFT and ABILITY to make complex information very simply and easy to understand and apply immediately in life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very colorful and informative
Does an excellent job of detailing specialized cells. This text goes through the entire process of sperm combining with egg producing a zygote and the development of an embryo.I read this book to my three year-old daughter, and she was amazed at the development--she even noticed that the 'baby' did not have ears! The images are very colorful that keep their attention.

This text also compares cells of different animals such as plant, dog, and cat.I also noticed that the concepts taught in this book correlate to the AAAS Atlas for appropriate concept development (they say age range up to 9).This is appropriate for my children to bridge the gap between elementary school and high school ( I teach high school biology).

4-0 out of 5 stars Good biology intro for little ones
I got this book for my 5-year old. It's a little advanced for her, but she loves it and it getting an intro into some biology concepts, including cell structure and fetal development. Also, it gives her an introduction to some biology words like DNA, protein, cytoplasm, and cell membrane.Includes four pages with diagrams of different types of cells (skin, hair, pigment, gland, muscle, nerve, bone, blood, etc). I also like how the author explains how cells are the same in people and animals, different in plants.Illustrations are very colorful and eyecatching.

    Product Description

Biology of Stem Cells and the Molecular Basis of the Stem State concentrates upon adult stem cells, particularly on mesenchymal cell populations, which is the author’s area of expertise. The text offers the reader a detailed description of the emergence of stem cell research and the dogmas that were created during the first decades of analysis of stem cell properties, particularly those of hemopoietic stem cells. Biology of Stem Cells and the Molecular Basis of the Stem State also introduces the reader to the commonly accepted notions regarding stem cell biology, with an emphasis on an alternative view of stemness, i.e. the stem state. In keeping with the popularity of this topic, Biology of Stem Cells and the Molecular Basis of the Stem State addresses the major controversies and points of dispute, among researchers in the stem cell field. Overall, Biology of Stem Cells and the Molecular Basis of the Stem State presents a well-rounded dialogue about stem cells as it not only concentrates upon the biological elements of stem cell, but also addresses the controversy and hype currently enveloping this popular subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biology of Stem Cells and the Molecular Basis of the Stem State
This is a great book for someone looking for an overview on the state of the art in stem cell research. Taking the historical roots of bone marrow transplantation as a starting point, the author guides the reader through the stem cells which are currently known explaining their niches, functions, characteristics and properties with an emphasis on how "stemness" should be defined. The last chapters are devoted to a comparative discussion between stem cells and cancer initiating cells and to an overview of studies involving mesenchymal stem cells as means for therapeutic procedures and tissue engineering. The book is rigorously scientific with several references to support the text. Each chapter is however concluded with critical views of the author on the subject who also poses some questions and "enigmas" which have not yet been answered by scientists as well as some suggestions on how such questions could be possibly answered. In summary, it is a great reading for those interested in an up to date overview on the science and biology of stem cells. As this field evolves quickly, it would be nice to see future editions with the relevant updates (the literature which is presented in the book goes up to 2009). ... Read more

The Cell: Evolution of the First Organism by Joseph Panno, Ph.D., offers an excellent, concise and interesting introduction on the cell and its evolution. Panno opens with a brief overview of theories related to life's origin, then moves to prokaryotes and how they laid a foundation for eukaryotes. Next, he offers an examination of the cell cycle, followed by genes, multicellular organisms, and neurons. Panno does a stellar job of communicating a complex subject clearly (better than many texts as I see it) and sans oversimplification. The black-and-white graphics and glossary are exemplary and useful to the student.
This is my first experience with Panno and the publisher Facts On File, Inc. I am most intrigued. Highly recommended.
The book professes to be targeted at high school or first-year biology students. As I see it, those students would be serious. While it may not be enough for someone with a good deal of biology education, it is excellent orientation for newcomers.
Another wonderful book that offers more of a prose take on biology and is very rich in a wholly different way is The Epic History of Biology by Anthony Serafini. ... Read more
