Product Description

For nearly a quarter century Molecular Biology of the Cell has been the leading cell biology textbook. This tradition continues with the new Fifth Edition, which has been completely revised and updated to describe our current, rapidly advancing understanding of cell biology. To list but a few examples, a large amount of new material is presented on epigenetics; stem cells; RNAi; comparative genomics; the latest cancer therapies; apoptosis (now its own separate chapter); and cell cycle control and the mechanics of M phase (now integrated into one chapter).

The hallmark features of Molecular Biology of the Cell have been retained, such as its consistent and comprehensive art program, clear concept headings, and succinct section summaries. Additionally, in response to extensive feedback from readers, the Fifth Edition now includes several new features.

It is now more portable. Chapters 1-20 are printed and Chapters 21-25, covering multicellular systems, are provided as pdf files on the free Media DVD-ROM which accompanies the book.* And for the first time, Molecular Biology of the Cell now contains end-of-chapter questions. These problems, written by John Wilson and Tim Hunt, emphasize a quantitative approach and the art of reasoning from experiments, and -they will help students review and extend their knowledge derived from reading the textbook. The Media DVD-ROM, which is packaged with every copy of the book, contains PowerPoint® presentations with all of the figures, tables and micrographs from the text (available as JPEGs too). Also included is the Media Player, which plays over 125 movies—animations, videos, and molecular models—all with voiceover narration. A new reader-friendly feature is the integration of media codes throughout the text that link directly to relevant videos and animations. The Media DVD-ROM holds the multicellular systems chapters (21-25) of the text as well.

By skillfully extracting the fundamental concepts from this enormous and ever-growing field, the authors tell the story of cell biology, and thereby create a coherent framework through which readers may approach and enjoy this subject that is so central to all of biology.

* There is also a reference edition of Molecular Biology of the Cell, Fifth Edition (ISBN 978-0-8153-4111-6) that contains Chapters 1-25 entirely in printed format.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
I ordered my book on the 8/30/2010 and emailed the seller before I placed my order since they offered the problem book for free with the textbook. I didn't hear anything from the seller so I bought the book since it was available. Then two weeks passed and I didn't receive the books I ordered. I contact the seller again. That was when it contacted me telling me that the book was sold out and that they forgot to remove it from the list!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The reason why they didn't answer my first email, well because it went to junk mail!!!!!!!!!!
I am two weeks into my class, my exam is in two weeks and now I am limited to fewer more expensive options. I am upset and disappointed! ... Read more

Product Description

Essential Cell Biology provides an accessible introduction to the fundamental concepts of cell biology. Its lively writing and exceptional illustrations make it the ideal textbook for a first course in cell and molecular biology. The text and figures are easy-to-follow, accurate, clear, and engaging for the introductory student. Molecular detail has been kept to a minimum in order to provide the reader with a cohesive, conceptual framework of the basic science that underlies our current understanding of biology.

The Third Edition is thoroughly updated scientifically, yet maintains the academic level and size of the previous edition. The book is accompanied by a Media DVD-ROM with over 130 animations and videos, all the figures from the book, and a new self-test quizzing feature for students.

the book came in very quickly and was exactly what I had expected. It also came with the DVD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cell Bio, good in depth book.
Very good text book, goes into great detail of all cellular processes. Definitely better than any intro Bio book, or intro Cell bio book. DVD that comes with it is very helpful. Shipped fast and in great condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Purchase!!!
My book arrived earlier than I thought it would. It was in great condition just like new. The seller was prompt with responding to my emails. I am enjoying my purchase!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, brief book with one minor issue.
I bought this book for my Cell Structure & Function course at Florida State. Overall, it's a good book, very easy to read, and explains pretty well. It does not cover the minute details, however. My only complaint about this book is its vague outline. What I mean is that the chapters are not really organized; the author sometimes abruptly goes from point to point, and you eventually get lost in the middle. That's why I gave it 4/5.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book of biology
Fantastic book for the basics to the border of intermediate/advanced knowledge. This is a definite buy for anyone starting in the field and will be a valuable resource for a long time. For the most in depth information on some topics, more resources will definitely be needed, but is an excellent starting point.

There are a few specialized topics I wish it would have covered more (ERVs for example), however, for the overall general information about the interworkings of a cell, this book is invaluable and will be a first resource for most biological topics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review for Molecular Cellular Biology
This book is much less wordy than other Biology texts. This time I actually read the book for class.

Product Description
Molecular Biology of the Cell is the classic in-depth text reference in cell biology. By extracting the fundamental concepts from this enormous and ever-growing field, the authors tell the story of cell biology, and create a coherent framework through which non-expert readers may approach the subject. Written in clear and concise language, and beautifully illustrated, the book is enjoyable to read, and it provides a clear sense of the excitement of modern biology. Molecular Biology of the Cell sets forth the current understanding of cell biology (completely updated as of Autumn 2001), and it explores the intriguing implications and possibilities of the great deal that remains unknown.
The hallmark features of previous editions continue in the Fourth Edition. The book is designed with a clean and open, single-column layout. The art program maintains a completely consistent format and style, and includes over 1,600 photographs, electron micrographs, and original drawings by the authors. Clear and concise concept headings introduce each section. Every chapter contains extensive references. Most important, every chapter has been subjected to a rigorous, collaborative revision process where, in addition to incorporating comments from expert reviewers, each co-author reads and reviews the other authors' prose. The result is a truly integrated work with a single authorial voice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE book
This is the book you need to get started in studying Cell science - - and the book you need as a Reference text. It is extraordinary, of immense value and clarity - truly comprehensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars As good as new..
I am very happy with the book, it arrived in the best condition possible, and with a lot of packing material in the box to keep the book from any possible transportation damages. The book is fresh and totally unused. I have no complains about anything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Molecular Biology Book
Shipped quickly. In good shape for a used book and campe with cd. Overall I am very impressed with the service.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good substitute for 5th Ed.
The diagrams are great in this book.

I'm using this instead of 5th Edition, and so far everything is the same. The CD uses outdated software, so it may be upgraded for 5th.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the gold standard
What distinguishes Alberts et al.'s book from other similar texts is the level of depth based on their own accomplished research background that the authors bring to their writing. This level is reflected in short, highly information rich paragraphs that illustrate the most important concepts of molecular biology and biochemistry.

The second unique feature of this volume is its sheer comprehensiveness. Alberts et al.'s book covers an astonishing amount of territory; from basic relevant physical chemistry and thermodynamics to the most biological of topics including gene arrays and knockout mice. The chapter on cancer is marvelous and comprehensively illustrates all fundamental aspects of the disease; metastasis, breakdown in genetic machinery and signal transduction pathways, tumor growth and characteristics, diagnostic procedures, and therapies.

The third unique feature of the book should be obvious; the hundreds of lavish color illustrations dotting every page, from basic schematics to stunning electron micrographs. The illustrations have been perspicaciously chosen to demonstrate the most important features of the living cell and its contents.

In a nutshell then, this is a one stop shop for students and researchers who want to learn and relearn all the fundamentals of the molecular biology and biochemistry of the cell. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It's okay...
I had to purchase it for a college course.I wish I did not have to buy it, but found it a little helpful but not much.It is just very time consuming. If you don't have time to work on it, and you are not required to buy it, I would say save yourself the extra cash:)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great study tool!!
I purchased this book because my cell bio professor said he was going to be using it for in class work.I am a grad student majoring in cell biology and I have enjoyed both the problems book and the text that accompanies it.The layout is organized in a way that it is easy to find what your looking for, and the videos, problems and answer explanations on the CD that comes with both books (the problems book and the text book) are extremely helpful.

I would definately recommend these books to someone interested in cell biology. It is as up to date as it can be with regards to new developments in the field (things are discovered and changed almost everyday in cell biology), but the book provides extensive background information as well as detailed accounts of developments, both new and old, contributions to the field and additional resources.

Editorial Review

Product Description
The second edition retains all the beauty of the first, and it serves as an editorial model -- a guide that shows us how serious authors prepare a new version of a serious book.

The first edition was the work of seven authors, all of them outstanding scientists [note 2]. For the second edition, the team of authors has been expanded to include a science writer, Karen Hopkin, whose main responsibility (the Preface tells us) has been "to make the book clear, accessible, and fun to read."

As in the earlier edition, there is a digest of "Essential Concepts" near the end of each chapter, and the illustrations are grouped into panels that actually explain principles, structures, procedures and experiments, rather than just providing pretty distractions. Some of the material has been reordered, the coverage has been broadened to include some new findings and new methods, there is more emphasis on genetics, and there is an expanded, improved complement of questions that make students take time to think, to realize that a question often has more than one valid answer, and to recognize that alternative perspectives are available in almost any situation. All of these changes are welcome.

...There are 21 "How We Know" articles -- one in every chapter -- providing information about metabolic pathways, protein structures, replication, the genetic code, mitosis, and cancer, among other topics. These articles… [are] very important innovations....Each copy of the new edition is accompanied by a CD-ROM, and the CD-ROM is not a mere gimmick or toy. It is a valuable adjunct to the textbook, and it has two important functions. First, it carries the literature references for each chapter in the book. (The references don't appear in the book itself.) Second, the CD-ROM provides interactive illustrations, typically with voice-over narrations, that demonstrate such things as the structures of molecules, the movement of cells, and the processes of replication, translation and cell division.

What makes for a great science education is not the amassing of facts but the understanding of concepts, processes and syntheses, and the realization that all our information about nature must be subject to testing and revision. That is the kind of educational experience that students can acquire from the second edition of Essential Cell Biology.

I recommend this new edition for use in advanced high-school courses aimed at students who already have had a course in chemistry and a solid introductory course in biology. This fine book also belongs in the library of any high school that offers serious instruction in science. Teachers and librarians who did not get the first edition should look at this second edition pronto.

3-0 out of 5 stars a nice addition to your studies
this book helped me a ton if you need help in micro at all this book will really help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I have read similar books on this topic, and this one is by far the best. It explains everything very well, and makes biology seem much easier. I believe that anyone can excel in science, if they want to and try hard enough. I would highly recommend this book for students who want to improve their grades in biology.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent introduction
This book is written by an excellent teacher, with clear explanations. An excellent supplement to a course on this difficult topic. Most texts in this area are highly technical, and this book can help orient the reader and resolve a lot of difficulties. I would love to take the course fromthe author, who shows enthusiasm and and a great capacity to communicate.

5-0 out of 5 stars helped me ace my final!
This book put complicated concepts into understandable ideas and helped me ace my oral final!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very clear explanation of a very complex subject
This book did just what I had hoped it would do.It took a very complex subject and explained it in as simple terms as possible.I've never had a formal course in biology, but I had watched all the lectures in an MIT Open Courseware course on the subject that had left me confused about a number of things.Of course, this book is not as comprehensive as a full course, but it did clarify a number of things for me. Many of the illustrations are much better than in the textbook that the MIT course was based on.Near the end of the book the author began giving specific study tips -- what things a student needs to be familiar with and what things they need to have down cold. In fact, the last chapter is entitled "Ten Ways to Improve Your Grade."I thought this a little strange, because the introduction does not mention this aspect of the book.It is done unobtrusively, so it shouldn't lessen a non-student's enjoyment of the book.I mention it because it might be a big plus to some prospective readers. ... Book Description
Physical Biology of the Cell is a biophysics textbook that explores how the basic tools and insights of physics and mathematics can illuminate the study of molecular and cell biology. Drawing on key examples and seminal experiments from cell biology, the book demonstrates how quantitative models can help refine our understanding of existing biological data and also be used to make useful predictions. The book blends traditional models in cell biology with the quantitative approach typical in physics, in order to introduce the reader to both the possibilities and boundaries of the emerging field of physical biology. While teaching physical model building in cell biology through a practical, case-study approach, the text explores how quantitative modeling can be used to build a more profound, intuitive understanding of cell biology. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very good explanation
I only read the first chapter so far, but it is written in a simple language and easy to follow. it was recommended by several fellow students.

4-0 out of 5 stars I do agree with most of the reviews.
This book is just simply alright. Yes I know this book goes into details that aren't traditionally covered in US schools, but we did cover all of it in Europe. So I would say that this book would be something I would use do compliment FA because it does lack Molecular.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked Great for Me
I haven't taken the boards, but this book really helped me with my first round of tests in med school. It pretty much took all the stuff we had learned in lecture and put it in a user-friendly format. It might be too detailed for the boards (that's what other reviewers said), but it is great for med school tests.

1-0 out of 5 stars Example of a bad "review" book.
If you read in the front of first aid, it says that you shouldn't waste your time on textbooks when reviewing for Step 1.The reason for this is because, for example, a pharmacology book would contain dosage information when you don't need it for step 1.This book is a HORRIBLE review book.It goes into more detail in some areas than I learned in undergrad. It seems to be written from a research perspective rather than a clinically relevant perspective.Every gene location that is named in this book goes into the chromosome number, location, region, subregion, subband, and sub-subband.Yes, I learned aforementioned terminology from this book.I would suggest finding a different review book or maybe just reading the bold stuff and picking and choosing what you want to read. The high yield series really dropped the ball on this edition of this book.

Most importantly for scientists and researchers, the free Media DVD, which is packaged with every copy of the book, now contains PowerPoint® presentations with all of the figures, tables and micrographs from the book (available as JPEGs too). Also included is the Media Player with over 125 movies—animations, videos, and molecular models—all with voiceover narration. These PowerPoint slides and movies are ideal for presentations and research talks. And for the first time, Molecular Biology of the Cell now contains end-of-chapter questions. These problems, written by John Wilson and Tim Hunt, emphasize a quantitative approach and the art of reasoning from experiments.

Molecular Biology of the Cell: Reference Edition is conceptual, accurate and authoritative. An extensive, detailed index provides instant access to the most crucial information and concepts, while a glossary with more than 1,300 entries has been designed for rapid access to technical vocabulary. By skillfully extracting the fundamental concepts from this enormous and ever-growing field, the authors provide the coherent framework needed to effectively access the primary literature.

* There is also a student textbook version of Molecular Biology of the Cell, Fifth Edition (ISBN 0-8153-4105-9) that contains Chapters 1-20 in printed format, and Chapters 21-25 only in pdf format on the accompanying DVD-ROM.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book but HEAVY!
I will be getting my BS in Biology this month and have had many science books.
This is a great book but it is just too big to take to class or school on a regular basis.

1-0 out of 5 stars Book was not bound correctly and the some of the videos in DVD don't work
I bought this reference edition (5th) on Barnes and Noble's website a year ago.
Because I was only using it occasionally for quick reference, I had not perused the entire content.

Unfortunately, when I tried to read Chapter 19 recently, I noticed that it was cut abruptly.
In addition, I noticed that Chapter 17 and part of 18 are inexplicably printed twice while beginning of Chapter 20 is missing.
Of course, Barnes and Noble did not honor my request for an exchange and the publisher seems to be unreachable, as they seem to be based on UK and the only method of contacting them is filling out a question on their website.

I bought this reference edition because I thought it would be worthwhile book to keep for years.
In this imperfect condition, however, it was a worthless investment, and yes, it was an investment at this price near 200 dollars.

Finally, the last draw was the fact that some videos on the DVD did not work.
They simply wouldn't play, whether it was through their Flash program or just through Quicktime, or whatever program I used.
This cannot be my computer's problem because I have tried it on my Mac as well as a new PC, and neither worked.

It's a disgrace that anyone should deal with this kind of an issue on a book that is priced like a mini encyclopedia.

As for content, I find it to be sufficiently satisfactory. It is a bit superficial, but then it is a survey book of an incredible number of topics so that is to be expected.
If I need more details, I can always just go to the journals.

Overall, great content, but terrible binding. Others may not have the same binding problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This book arrived 3 days before i had a protein lab report due and it was a godsend. Trying to cover the subject depth required in the precipitant lectures is next to impossible and increasingly students are needing to do independent study to gain a definitive understanding. This text covers so many topics and in such great detail as well. Other texts cover similar areas but i have not found any that deliver the level of detail that this one does. It covers complex themes and delivers them in an easy to understand format. I also like the fact that it is red as it helps it stand out from the hundred other texts in my bookcase. I would thoroughly encourage anyone studying any biological science to add this text to their collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Work of Passion
The fifth edition of MBoC (Molecular Biology of the Cell) is great. I have been taking Cell Biology classes and this book complements what the teacher doesn't have time to say in classroom and explains very nicely the parts I don't understand well in class. The texts are well structured and well written. The videos which come together in the DVD really give you on-the-moving kinda way of samples of what you read non-moving on the pages. =)

The book is a work of passion (I have been wanting to write this last phrase for some time now... LOL); but really, you can see how the people who wrote it love what they do. Cells are amazing little things and you have no idea of how they work so hard, intricately and non-stop. You can have a glimpse at the extraordinary machinery cells are.
If you like this area of science, Cell Biology, do buy this book and study it hard. I recommend to all that want to change this world, be he student or teacher.

The single complain I have got is that there are NO answers for the end-of-chapter problems they wrote! You need to buy that Problems Book Molecular Biology of the Cell, Fifth Edition: The Problems Book. Oh well.

along with many other fine health science and molecular biology books, many of them the most recent edition, some down loadable as PDFs.

It remains to be seen if Bruce Alberts can prevail on Garland to make the current edition available on line as well.

It may also be worth mentioning that selling used textbooks online through Amazon is very easy, and if you sell them before a new edition comes out, you often can recoup 1/3 to 1/2 of original purchase price. So as soon as you know that one of those expensive tomes on your shelf is a dog, list it online immediately while it still has value. And if on the other hand you know you will have to get the new edition of a book when it is available, dump the previous edition just before a new one is due, and use the money toward the new edition. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A great book! But for medical school? I hope not.
I purchased this review book to help me study for my Cell and Molecular biology class and it did just that, it was a great review book. It carries the most important points, in a small amount of detail, with great pictures so you can begin to see the activity of a cell as a whole.

It served its purpose for me but, on a tangent, I can't imagine how this is a suitable review book for medical school. The biochemistry lippincott's sure, that thing has 500 pages packed with detail. This one is not nearly as detailed as the lippincott's biochemistry review.

It's a great review tool for undergraduate courses. For medical school, which these are often used for, it might be great too but I'd like to think anyone in medical school knows the amount of cell and molecular biology contained in this book cold.

4 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Appropriate to Medicine Students
For 2 decades I teached Cell Biology. I used Cell Biology's Alberts and Coleagues Book as most important reference book to my Medicine Students. Pollard&Earnshaw's Cell Biology is much complete as Alberts'one; however, it is more complete, and it guide more easy to Medical formation questions. I am very glad to know Pollard&Earnshaw's book and share the content to my students, and to provide better discussions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Book has a good balance between giving enough detailed information to understand the concepts without giving so much information that it is overwhelming.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prompt timing and great condition
Prompt timing and excellent condition.
The book is divided into chapters and each chapter has overview and references. Good quality of figures.

2-0 out of 5 stars upset
the cornor of the book was banded really bad. but I didn't return it since I need it for class soon.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horribly written
This book is awful. I am currently taking a Cell Biology class at Johns Hopkins and we are required to use this book. It is dry, uninteresting, and presents information in a very unorganized fashion. The book repeats itself many times. Also, the text often refers to figures that are on different pages in the book, requiring you to shuffle around through the pages looking for examples. The way the book presents important information is not effective, because most of the important stuff gets diluted with unimportant facts.

This book might have its uses as a reference, but will not help you learn the concepts very well. I do not recommend this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Overpriced, but beneficial
I bought this as a companion to the Lodish textbook for my undergraduate molecular course. This thin black and white softcover explains solutions to the end of chapter questions; there is no study guide, no additional diagrams to help the student study. The book seems very overpriced at almost fifty dollars for a new copy, especially for something so meager, it could have easily been printed in the back of the actual textbook itself.

Price aside, this is a valuable companion to the textbook because it offers well written explanations to complex chapter problems.

3-0 out of 5 stars It a good buy
It is helpful if you are going to be answering the questions at the end of each section.I would not pay more than $10.

3-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, shapeless compendium of molecular biology
Although I don't claim to be a molecular biologist, nor have I read beyond chapter 5 of Lodish's "Molecular and Cell Biology", this textbook feels admirably thorough in its treatment of its subject, bringing the reader up to date on a wide range of the detail generated in the field over the past few decades.

The book's authors, furthermore, have addressed the learning needs of their readership; once it moves into its substantive chapters, virtually all points are made simultaneously with textbook prose and colorful, graphic illustrations which are well drawn and accompanied by excellent captions. This aspect of the book is its great strength.

There is a far more serious problem with the book, however, which explains the middling rating I have given it. Like many such textbooks, it is committee-written, which is not a problem when such books are given proper shape by a sharp editor. But the book lacks that editor and as a result dwells on the most trivial developments in its field with exactly the same weight as its bedrock components to a fault. In aiming to be comprehensive, it drowns the reader in a sea of obnoxious detail that begs the book and its authors not to be taken seriously. The book may have been conceived as a reference, but I fear that it will always be assigned chapter rather than passage at a time, as is customary in graduate school courses.

The corollary to this situation is that the first several chapters of the book describe a host of laboratory processes, each in enormous detail and overall in serial fashion, without adequately describing the use and purpose for each. The book then explains that each process will be taken up in a later chapter in conjunction with an exploration of the field in which it is mainly used. This is all fine, but does the reader really need to be held accountable for a description of these processes twice, particularly when they are presented so haphazardly initially? At least in the first five chapters, rote memorization is the only learning strategy possible for the vast majority of the material. And while there is nothing wrong with rote memorization, the unconnectedness of the material, combined with its sprawling volume, make these initial chapters virtually useless as learning tools.

I recommend this book, therefore, with a strict reservation: it should only be used by a teacher so familiar with it that he can assign "primary", "secondary", and perhaps even "tertiary" passages from it at a time, in order to help the reader build an understanding of molecular biology systematically and rationally structure his study time.

This Schaum's Outline was written to help bring order and understanding to this rapidly expanding field. As a succinct overview of the subject, it will supplement any molecular biology course or provide the foundation needed for advanced courses. The text material is presented in a question and answer format; each concept is explained as an answer to a specific question. At the end of each chapter are objective questions of several kinds; multiple choice, true-false, fill-ins, and matching. 5-0 out of 5 stars very satisfied
i recently bought this book and i found it very interesting. it is so easy to understand molecular biology by reading it! it is not heavy and i can take it anywhere. nice pictures.

1-0 out of 5 stars Painful and Worthless
I bought this book in a bundle with two other Schaum's Outlines: one in Biochemistry and one in Genetics.I had intended to use them as a review in preparation for the Biochemistry, Molecular, and Cell Biology Subject GRE.I have been sorely disappointed.First of all, this book is out of date.It was written in 1996 and the field of molecular biology has transformed in multiple ways over the past 13 years.I continually had to question some of the conclusions of the book across multiple chapters.More often than not I went back to my text books from undergrad to review the topics and what has changed.I eventually skipped chapters all together and just read those in my old textbooks. But not only is this book out of date, it is also poorly written.Topics don't flow, bullets are confusing. The general narative of the book is convoluted and confusing.I've finally moved on to the biochemistry book, and I'm starting to find the same issues.I am disappointed that I actually spent money on this book.Look for other reivews, or simply look at a textbook. This book is not worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars definitely worth 10 dollars
This guide contains details about biology that are concise and at least as good as, if not more detailed than 2+ years of introductory biology courses. Though not an introductory guide, an excellent resource.

4-0 out of 5 stars an excellent introduction
I am a Macromolecular crystallographer and have never formally attended any courses on molecular biology or biochemistry. I find these Schaum series books to be very useful. They are very concise, and provide all the information one needs to achieve a good understanding of the basic concepts and terminology. Another advantage is that they are paperbacks and easier to read compared to the heavier and more detailed texts like Stryer or Lehninger.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Neal C. Murphy, CWRU, UCLA
With his prior collaborative book, "Principles of Tissue Engineering" this text, "Essentials of Stem Cell Biology" provides the essential rationale for that curious endeavor of applied biology we call "healthcare". While others are wringing hands and endlessly belaboring cost-effectiveness, access to care, competitive efficacy and other bureaucratic minutia, Bob Lanza has kept his eyes to the stars. Motivated no doubt by the thrill of discovery which truly historical thinkers enjoy, and others have inspired in Dr. Lanza, mankind surely benefits from the fruits of his labors. The contents, of this book, covering a plethora of topics and concepts, is so well organized that one could read it from beginning to end as a novel or piecemeal as queries demand from an encyclopedia. The limits of this text are merely those of a physical bound book itself. I pray the publishers will expand an online edition that can be edited and updated monthly, for that is the speed at which the future's promises emerge. Robert Lanza is that rare individual that knows a story, knows how to tell it well, and bring to practical fruition all its manifest gifts. In this regard he is a kind of Steve Jobs of biology and applied life sciences.

Yet, Dr. Lanza has not forgotten his clinical roots. While ideal in its concepts, the data in this book are equally practical since they provide intelligible rationales for the kind of innovative clinical procedures that each individual patient expects and prefers. All the Gaussian frequency distributions, categorical mandates and customs of clinical care, will not fill the void that emerges when a patient asks, "Isn't there anything you can do for me as an individual, Doctor? Each compassionate, humanistic and thinking clinician knows that the "average" patient is merely a statistical construct and in the real world one had better have a compelling argument for each individual treatment rendered. This book provides a tissue/cell level rationale for such treatment excellence, not that potpourri, that boiling stew of pseudo cures, commercial nostrums, shifting consensus and folklore that jams the flow of lucid clinical thought. Without the "North Star" of Lanza and his collaborators, the hapless clinician is sadly adrift in the intellectual seas of 21st Century life science.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent place to start
This book is an excellent place to start if you're interested in stem cells. It covers just about all areas of research and is authoritatively authored by serveral experts in the field. The only caveat is that the field is changing so rapidly that some of the information in the book is a bit outdated (and of course, that's true of just about science text). However, you can quickly supplement the information in this book by getting more current research papers off pubmed or elsewhere. All in all, I think this book does provide an excellent foundation for getting into the field and understanding the basic science and its potential promise.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Summary of the State of the Art as it Exists Today.
This large book follows the common trend in new and emerging sciences in being written by a large number of authors who are active researchers in the field. The science simply has not yet had time to resolve itself into a common body of knowledge that one author can present to the world.

In this book there are some 200 contributors from literally around the world. A quick scan shows people from the United States, Israel, the UK, Italy, Switzerland, Australia, Japan and more. As you would expect each team of authors concentrates on the particular area of research in which he is engaged. This gives you an up to date view of the state of the art at the risk of having chapters of unequal quality.

The book starts off with the simple question, "What are stem cells." There are then chapters on what they do, how they work, methods and procedures used in research, and several chapters on how stem cell research is developing treatments for various diseases. The book concludes with four chapters on the regulations and ethics of stem cell research. This includes chapters on governmental and religious aspects. This sections concludes with a paper by the actress Mary Tyler Moore who has had type 1 diabetes for more than 40 years. She titles her chapter "It's Not About Curiosity, It's About Cures."

This book is the definitive state of the art as it exists today.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacks sufficient references
The 69 chapters in this book, the 2nd edition published in July 2009, together contain a wealth of information from developmental biology and molecular biology to medicine. Many chapters contain helpful diagrams and pictures to go along with explanations. However, it is very mammalian-oriented, with insufficient coverage of regeneration and stem cell biology in non-mammals.In addition, this type of book should have many more references at the end of each chapter that can lead the reader to the original journal articles rather than a list of review articles. Some chapters have better lists of references than others.Overall, the Essentials of Stem Cell Biology contains more than essentials for mammalian stem cell biology, including methods, but is deficient in essentials such as non-mammalian stem cell biology and references to primary research articles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast shipping and good product
I have this book shipped from US to Thailand. I cannot believe that it takes only two weeks which is earlier than I expected it to be arriving. This book is a must for researcher and student who work on stem cell research. It's a good reference with the most up-to-date information.

A special feature of this book include the information about iPS cell. It really help me understand what is stem cell and its application. However, the book is not for a beginner in this field. Some aspects in this book require advance knowledge in Cell biology, Immunology as well as Genetics Science. I don't have a very strong background in cell biology at all and I know nothing about immunology and genetics at all. So I have to review those information first in order to understand what it says in the book.

But I give more than 5 stars for this book! ... Read more

The book also builds on its strong illustration program by opening each chapter with “VIP” art that serves as a visual summary for the chapter. Over 60 new micrographs and computer-derived images have been added to enhance the material. Biologists benefit from these changes as they build their skills in making the connection. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Recieving My Text Book
Amazon estimated the delivery date to be much further off than it turned out to be.The person I ordered it from shipped it right away so I got it under a week of ordering. It was in good condition as promised.

I bought the book new and it works well in my Cell-Molec class. Wish it came with the online companion but I'm no worse off and probably saved money just buying the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I bought this book for my Cell biology class. As a kid I remember seeing a really early edition of this book at home because my dad took some classes at UF with Gerald Karp. It's great that he has followed the field for so many years and keeps his editions up to date to reflect the latest evidence and new models. All in all a great book, wonderfully written with great figures and beautiful experiments.

4-0 out of 5 stars Slow down!
I listened to this audiobook CD while getting myself ready for the day, cleaning house, and driving.
The information presented was read aloud by 2 interchangeable voices, one of them loud and intrusively projected and the other smooth and charismatic.I did not mind the loud voice after getting used to it, but I did not like the fast pace of the readings at all.The wording is definitely that of a textbook lacking character and personal relation. The topics have no particular order, lending me an unorganized feeling.
What I liked a lot about this audiobook were the previews at the beginning of the topics and the reviews at the end of each topic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely thorough and in-depth; not for casual listening
These two cassettes are not a Reader's Digest version of biology: this is very intense coverage of the innermost workings of the cell. The material starts with electron valence and moves up from there, and it moves VERYfast. Clearly this is not intended as the first learning source for thismaterial, but it probably would be fantastic review for those who learnedit elsewhere and are cramming for a test.

This receives only four starsnot for content but for the media itself: this is just not the best way tolearn this topic. It's hard to visualize (say) chains of hydrocarbons froma verbal description, so pictures in the companion text (ISBN 1884612016)would probably be a welcome addition. Mine is on order.

I must say Ilearned a lot from these tapes, and I will surely listen to them again, butit was quite exhausting. ... Read more
