5-0 out of 5 stars Lippincott at its best!
Love the book. I am a visual learner and the colorful pictures and diagrams help me tremendously.

5-0 out of 5 stars Speedy!
I needed my book for class later that week and got it before my class started! Shrink wrapped and new.

5-0 out of 5 stars Premedical Text
Astounding text. Great graphics. For someone who does not particularly enjoy chemistry, this is your text. Everything is broken down. Supplemental online questions are good. The questions posit real world medical scenarios. Feels very applicable. This is a required course for my premed tract. Best chemistry/biology text I've ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great price
This is a great book for a great price. The pictures aren't in color, but the old editions are otherwise similar to the new one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but could be better
I started using this book to prepare for Step 1 of the boards, but I didn't care for it. I found all the colors too distracting and didn't find the explanations terribly helpful either. The one time I learned biochemistry best was using Mark's Basic Medical Biochemistry a Clinical Approach Second Edition. I found that book to be much better at simplifying and explaining the pathways with better figures. I mostly used Mark's and Biochemistry from Kaplan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is it
Lippincott's illustrated review is too wordy. This is what I need to prepare for the boards. good charts and short, concise bullet-pointed contents makes review fast and easy.

con: costs too much for a 150 page book.

4-0 out of 5 stars CD needs to be improved!!!!
Book itself is excellent! Very easy to digest all information. I tried to use CD to answer questions. Programm doesn't let to check all incorrect answers, instead it shows some of them or totally different answers from what i did answer. I verified it. Some of the questions repeat in the next test and keeps coming up again and again. My conclusion: CD is totally usless, but book is excellent for studying and i am still happy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gamble paid off!
Everyone at my medical school endorses BRS and HY so I wasn't too sure about this series, but I took a gamble (same price as HY with content & ??'s like BRS). I'm glad I did!

The book does an excellant job of condensing the relevent information in digestable portions with outstanding diagrams. I read this book over summer before 2nd year, about 5 months after completing my Biochem coursework. I did well in classes but had HMG CoA totally mixed up between ketones and cholesterol (as just one example) but this book put the big picture, comparative information and necessary details together for me.

It's a great confidence builder and even though Biochem isn't considered the highest yield topic for Step 1, I would invest in this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars From a Student
This biochemistry book is difficult to understand. The author gives facts and numbers about different biochemical properties, but never relays them back to the overall picture. Many concepts that are related to one another are poorly explained. The book explains the biochemical relationship as something just "interferes" or "interacts", without providing an adequate and clear explanation. The book needs more pictures, so that students like me can see what is going. I ordered voet&voet through the interloan library and it is much better

5-0 out of 5 stars great customer service!!! 5++++
super!!!!the book came before the estimate date of arrival and it looks way better than described. i am very happy i did business with you :) will do again!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product and service
The book came quickly and was in near perfect condition.More than satisfied in every regard.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a very happy purchase
Pay for two days shipment but turns out a two weeks shipment.
No tracking number included in the shipping information plus
a lot of mishandling by the carrier. This affected my future
interest to purchase on line.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
The book is a great resource for learning biochemistry at a fast pace. I'm using it in my Fundamental of Biological Design course, in which we go over a variety of related fields at breakneck speed (3 weeks of biochemistry, 2 weeks of engineering, 1 week of imaging, 3 weeks of genetics, etc..). I had never taken a course in biochemistry during my undergraduate career and this book has proven invaluable in my PhD career.

I would suggest this book to anybody who wants to learn biochemistry at a discussable level, quickly. ... Read more

Customer Reviews (13)

1-0 out of 5 stars Full of Errors!!!
For a "Board Review" book, you need something that is accurate and condensed. This is not accurate, and while the book is short I wouldn't call it condensed - it's just short.Looks like plenty of other reviewers have already mentioned the errors, so I won't go into detail on that. However, when I compare this against Lippincott's Biochemistry review, this book doesn't even register on the scale.Where Lippincott's book is condensed, but still has enough information to refresh and re-teach important principles, the BRS book is more of a "cut and paste" of little blurbs of info that seem dis-jointed.Worse, with the errors in the book, the "cut and pasted" segments don't quite have enough detail for most people to pick up on the errors.

This book has made me seriously consider the whole BRS series - I will be highly critical of each book, and not just assume that they are all good.

Do not buy this book - it will waste your time and cost you points on Step 1!

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of BRS Biochemistry
I mainly used this book as a resource to practice questions before my shelf exams. I feel that it is a good review book because it also integrates other topics like pathology, and pharmacology along with the study of biochemistry.
I think that this book is a bit to superficial to use while learning biochemistry (if you do it may haunt you later when you can't remember biochemistry while preparing for STEP 1).
I recommend using a more substantial book along with your Basic Science biochemistry course.
Like other BRS books you will have access to the questions on-line, so that you do not have to carry the book around with you all of the time.

3-0 out of 5 stars average
Well, this book is much much much better than the previous edition BRS biochem book. The text overall does explain things but I will agree the questions are worthless. I ended up buying Rapid-Review BioChem and fell in LOVE!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, if supplemented with the Lippincot Illustrated
This book is an excellent source for good pictures and plenty of review questions. Do not use this book as the main source of learning.

Major draw backs included
-Lack of full text on [...].
-Not enough questions based on genetics

Major pros included
Abundant questions on metabolism
Excellent charts/diagrams for pathways

Is it worth buying? Only if you want to do lots of practice questions. I do not regret buying it. Saved by butt on the final, wish i used it for midterms.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good review of biochem
BRS biochemistry covers all the material that you would expect, and, while there are errors in the review questions, most are simply the answer choice not corresponding to the explanation. I, for one, prefer the BRS format to the rapid review, so I'll put up with the inconvenience. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry, Fourth Edition
very helpful text and not very different from the 5th edition. good resource to reference and an easy to understand

4-0 out of 5 stars Missing several updates, but correct info
This book has all the essentials for learning Biochemistry, but is not quite up to date with additional information from recent research such as amyloid disease progression. Also, the 5th edition contains several more end of chapter questions that contribute to overall understanding. I appreciated the answers to these questions in the back to check my answers when doing homework.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Medical Biochemistry Text
This book goes beyond biochemistry by relating all concepts to how they are used clinically. It makes some of the toughest concepts easier to understand. It also makes you think about how it is related to medical practice. It keeps the student interested in what they are reading instead of boring them to sleep.

1-0 out of 5 stars horrible book

1-0 out of 5 stars Filled with erorrs
Do not buy this book!It says on the cover "a reference for the rest of us". What a joke, this book is filled with elementary errors.I mean, the authors should look at the book at least once before dedicating it to "my wife", "my mother", "my sons", etc. ;-) I bought the book yesterday. Opened on "ATP: The body's monetary system" (chapter 13).In about 15 minutes of casual reading I found 5 error. Common authors, it will be great that you read it once.
Among errors

- Figure 13-1. Glycolysis.ATP is produced not consumed in 2 and 9 step of the second phase of glycolysis. This is the whole point of glycolysis! It says correctly in the text, but the figure is wrong. And the authors ask people to return frequently to the this figure! ;-0

- page 199 first sentence, it should be not "... transfer of a phosphate group from C-2 to C-3", but the other way around.

- page 201, on the bottom right of the page, chemical formula and structure of Ethanol (!) is given incorrectly.Common authors, get some basic Biochemistry TextBook and learn the formula for ethanol.Or just hire a good undergraduate student for 20 $ an hour to proof-read your error-filled "guide for the rest of us".

3 GROSS errors in 15 minutes, I would never read this book again!

3-0 out of 5 stars Some typos fixed in second printing. Many remain.
I had looked at a library copy of this and saw the missing reaction arrows and held off on buying it.I finally did buy it just to get an introduction.

In the second printing (NOT second edition) the reaction arrows are present - though they are shown as two double-headed arrows rather than the standard two single headed arrows.

But errors remain. For example, the formulas for valine and isoleucine inside the front cover are wrong. They have too many hydrogens on one of the carbon atoms.I don't know how many more of these there are.

It's really not a bad book but the errors drive me nuts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Supplemental Text
I found this book to be very helpful while taking my college level biochemistry course.Although it seems basic, it is a great review of the material involved in biochemistry.
I found it to be a great supplemental study guide in addtion to the course textbook.

2-0 out of 5 stars Errors errors everywhere
I sat down with this book tonight, opened the first page and immediately see an error! Further investigation into the contents show more incorrect information. After using Klein's Organic Chemistry as a Second Language series for organic chemistry, this book is a HUGE let down in terms of writing style and in terms of how error-prone it seems to be. I am very disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I used Biochemistry for Dummies to study for the ACS Biochemistry final at the University of Mississippi. Before the exam, I border-lined a high "B" and a low "A". Using this book, I was able to study more efficiently in a shorter amount of time. Moore does an excellent job of explaining some of the most complex concepts of biochemistry in layman's terms. I ended up scoring well enough on the exam to score an "A" in my class. This book sums up a biochemistry text book in roughly 300 easy-to-read/skim pages. I didn't even open my text book. It was extremely helpful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for
Extraordinarily helpful. The back of it even comes with a fill-in large cell map showing respiration, photosynthesis, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars principles of biochemistry
Received the product within a very reasonable span of time and was satisfied with the condition of the product. Very pleased with the transaction...

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a Solutions Manual for the Text
I thought I was ordering the solutions manual for the text and when I recieved this book I found that the only solutions that it had was the problems that were part of the study guide. The text solutions manual was a whole seperate entity that I did not recieve so I was pretty disappointed with my purchase. Just a heads up to anyone looking to purchase the ACTUAL solutions manual for the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent supplemental material to the text
For my class the text alone is not sufficient for understanding the course since often my professor expects us to understand foreign ideas very confidently and to be able to apply them quickly. I am also expected to know a lot of the biology that I was never taught and this helps me learn the material without having to look up many of the biology concepts. Saying that, I definitely struggled until I opened up the solutions manual and started doing the study guide in the front of the solutions manual and then the problems from the text and checking my work in the back of the solutions manual. I haven't finished the course yet, just started it actually, but I can tell already that I am learning way more and understanding the concepts much, much better than I was before. I definitely recommend this for anyone who is struggling in this class or even if you need some extra practice, it's worth the [...] bucks if you want to learn the material!

2-0 out of 5 stars Biochemistry Text and Guide
This is an outdated version (4th edition) of the text, and both the text and guide were in pretty bad shape when i got them in the mail. But, if you don't need the current version, and don't care about the condition, then this combo is a great price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Study Resource for Biochem NBME
For the Biochemistry NBME exam, this book helped me more than any other resource during the few days prior to the test. It is mostly clinical vignette-style questions, which are VERY similar to what I saw on test day (with the exception that a few pages use color pictures, which the NBME doesn't have). My medical school's biochem faculty highly recommended it, and many of my classmates agree that this book was indispensible. The questions it asks are well beyond the scope of what we learned in our course lectures (many diseases were referenced that I had never heard of!), and so it really allowed me to get a good idea of where I stood, and got me up to speed on unfamiliar material fast. Don't be surprised if a lot of the questions in this book completely stump you. That might discourage you (it did me), but it means you can learn a lot from it!

The answers to the questions are explained so well, I hardly needed to consult reference material as I studied this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Harper's Illustrated Biochemistry Review
The chapters in this text are broken up into individual topics which have short paragraphs associated with them, making this text an excellent resource for students trying to find out information about a specific topic quickly. For example, looking up Carbamoyl Phosphate Synthetase I in the index leads you to p. 245 where there is a short paragraph explaining the significance of the regulatory compound N-Acetylglutamate and the medical importance of this particular enzyme. This degree of organization would make this book a good resource to have on the shelf after students use it in their primary study of biochemistry. The large number of multi-colored diagrams support the text well and provide an easier read than many Biochemistry textbooks. This text would be a good resource for medical students in their study of basic medical science. It seems there is an increased amount of genetics and molecular biology in this text, which is the trend in medical schools and pre-medicine education. The Case Histories at the end of the text do an excellent job of validating the importance of the study of Biochemistry through application to clinical situations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unnecessary swipe at alternative medicine
I bought this book to update my older biochemistry coursework. It's sufficient to cover the subject appropriately.I did not appreciate the irrelevant bashing of alternative medicine in the intro chapter. The subject is irrelevant to the topics that are covered in the book, and the authors are ignorantly commenting. Mind-body medicine is accepted by Duke University Medical School, among others. The authors should refrain from commenting on what they know not.I was unable to reach the authors for this feedback and so I write here. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Biochem must.
This is a well written, well illustrated book.I found it very helpful and highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars good
I did not use this book very much but, it gives good short details and would be very good to read before you take the class to give you some background information.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but poor proofreading
it states that pH>7 is acidic and pH<7 is basic in chapter two. This is obviously wrong and was missed in the editing. There are also small errors throughout the book but as whole it delivers the information in a concise form. This is more of a review book though, so a textbook on biochemistry will be needed to fully understand what is going on. The most impressive parts of this book have to be little pieces of information that helps to understand "why", which are usually not directly addressed in biochem text books. The example that comes to mind is the solvent levelling effect. I have only seen it glanced over in biochemistry textbooks, but it is important and helps reinforce acid/base concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro book
When I wanted to start reading Lenninger Priciple's of Biochemistry it felt like a bucket of cold water... there were many things that I could not understand; hence, I went for something simple and concise, something that gives me enough background (in a short amount of time) info to somehow figure out what Lenninger tried to explain. For that purpose, this book is very good. Do not expect to be a master biochemist after you read this book, this is just an INTRODUCTION and OUTLINE of the main ideas... only the concepts that are used most often appear! Although obvious, the bad part of the download version is that you have to be attached to a computer =(

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but its no RR path
Bought this book to study for the USMLE Step 1 exam because I had used Rapid Review Pathology: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access and Dr. Goljan helped to write this book as well. It is good and not too long, but it is nothing compared to the Pathology book, which I think is pretty much the best book ever. If you want to read a whole book on Biochem. for Step 1 review, this book is probably better than BRS, which is the other book I have used, but I actually like the biochem section of medEssentials for the USMLE Step 1 (Kaplan Medessenitals for the USMLE Step 1) better. If you haven't bought RR path yet though, buy it and read it all through MS2 because it is the best book ever.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book-if used correctly
This book can be a great resource throughout the first couple years of med school and step 1 studying... but it is not a good idea to read it on its own. Best way to use= reading up on each topic in this book while making your way through First AID for step 1....

3-0 out of 5 stars lots of words...i like pictures
for those who want more detailed information, this could be a good review book. I however like pictures and easy to understand tables. When I opened this book I wanted to shut it again it was so discouraging to look at! I'm not sure this is terribly ideal for reviewing for USMLE :/ maybe better off as a supplement to your biochem lectures

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Biochem Review
I've bought and read lippincot's, BRS, HY, and this book and well I have to say that RR provides the best overall review in the easiest to understand wording and layout. The new BRS is alright but RR does a better job. I found lippencott's to be a bit vague in explaining concepts and overly relied on pictures to explain what should have been done with text.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Book for Review and for class
Biochemistry was my first Med-School Class and I was conflicted on whether to get BRS or Rapid Review. I am extremely pleased that I purchased this book. It has everything important, and a great website with over 200 questions. The questions at the end and online are challenging and offer detailed, concise explanations on why a right answer is right, and why wrong answers are wrong. The text is marvelous. The margins boast a plethora of high-yield facts that actually did come up on the Biochemistry Shelf exam from the NBME. The diagrams are excellent and furthermore, this book serves as a suitable guide to use while taking the actual class, not just for the shelf or usmle review. It's short length also makes it convenient to study for exams when one does not have much time, which I can definitely say, books like lippincott's illustrated reveiew do not cater for. It depends on your study style and how much time you give yourself though. This is "hands down" THE BEST biochemistry review book anyone could own. The book really integrates clinical topics well, and it covers all topics and prepares one to take the shelf exam and by association, the USMLE [for biochemistry questions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Biochemistry Made Ridiculously Simple
It took a while to get here, but it came in great condition, and it was delivered when they said.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview
This book was the recommended study tool to prepare for a biochem clep test for my physician associate program. Each section is concise and explains things very well; the author uses colloquial language so it's not as bad as some textbooks. He uses the idea that the body is an amusement park and makes analogies of what each system does in the park. I prefer more visuals, especially in color, and this book has very few so that's why I don't give it 5 stars. (I passed the clep test thanks to it :) )

5-0 out of 5 stars make bioche so much fun and ridiculouse easy to remember!!!
To prepare my medical exams, I have to read tons of books. But this book prepare me so well in my nutrition and pharmacology class. I can talk and discuss with professors like pro. The book has an outstanding mindmap: A biochemistry amusement park!!!!!. Instead of list all those boring reactions and chemistry compounds base on organ system. The book catagorizes the reaction based on main powerhouse, carbonhydrateland... Lots of fun to read the map during the study. I spend 2 nights to finish the book and then another 10 or 15 minutes to memorize the biochemistry mind-map. The pass the exams like a piece of cake. Thank you Dr. Stephen Goldberg, you did a great job and help a lousy and lazy student like me a lot!!! I love biochemistry and all those hormones stuff now!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
Every MRS book this author publishes is awesome. This book is no exception. It's definitely not a detailed or comprehensive review. But it sure tied everything together for me, fast.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best review if you know biochemistry
Best one-day review book. 99 pages only!!!!But you need to have a good background in biochemistry. Clinical section is amazing and full as well as "infirmary section" on vitamins and hormones.
Do not read this book if you don't know the ropes of biochemistry.

1-0 out of 5 stars Numerous Basic Errors
The error start in the second and third formulae in Chapter 1 (page 4). Both confuse the number (mol) and concentration (molarity), which any person who has had general chemistry should discover. In addition, it incorrectly states that it is 1 in 5 million molecules of water dissociate; it is correctly 1 in 555 million, which any person capable of basic math should discover. Numerous basic errors repeat to the end of the text. The number of basic errors in the text should cause doubt of its validity. Use Berg or Lehninger or Devlin.

4-0 out of 5 stars The right stuff!
Alright! Listen ! if you want a book to help you with your Biochem PhD. this is not the one for you . But If you want to learn Biochem in a very clinically relevant way, look no further!Dr. Meisenberg has a very clear grasp of the material and conveys it well in this book. this is a book for medical students. if you are one .. you know as well as I do that we want to learn Biochem just enough to use it clinically and to do well on the USMLE. The Clinical associations and illustrations in this book make it just right for that purpose. Along with a bit of
Dr. meisenberg's intelectual humor, it makes biochem almost palatable!(You'll catch it in there here and there). You WILL find in this book all the info needed to rock the step ( as I did) in a short, fun, no fluff format.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for medical students
I love this book - I would not, however, use this as your only biochem text book (I would also get Lippincott or the First Aid General Principles book). This book seems like it was written knowing where medical students run into problems. The book explains things simply and in a relatively easy to understand way.I also like the clinical applications in this book - not only is the biochemistry taught, but it also provides some clinical information as well.I didn't really like this when I was an M1, but now as I'm studying for my boards, I love it.I'll definitely reference this book for a long time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so great
This book was required for my biochem. course and I would not recommend it for someone who it learning the information for the first time or who has not had a biochemistry course. It is highly condensed and would probably be great if studying for the USMLE, COMLEX etc b/c it is more of a review. A lot of details that are needed to understand the basic concepts are left out.

Product Description

Based on the Second Edition of Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry: A Clinical Approach, Marks' Essentials of Medical Biochemistry has been streamlined to focus on only the most essential biochemical concepts important to medical students. The authors present facts and pathways to emphasize how the underlying biochemistry is related to the body's overall physiological functions. This text presents patients to the students as the biochemistry is being discussed, which strengthens the link between biochemistry and medicine and allows the student to learn about this interaction as the biochemistry is presented. Each chapter includes clinical and biochemical notes and comments, questions and answers to encourage further thinking, and suggested references for those who would like to pursue a particular topic in more depth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biochemistry
This book is very good for explaining the complex biochemistry for aspiring health care professionals. The vignettes that are presented use names that are sometimes something you must overlook, but the content and context of the book was really useful and gives a solid foundation without being overly lengthy or complex.

1-0 out of 5 stars essentials
If you are taking a med./pharm. class I would suggest using a different text if offered. The basics are there, but you have to wade through a lot of B.S. to get there.
If this text is required then make sure you take good notes in class.

1-0 out of 5 stars AVOID This book.It is NOT What it Purports to Be.

Well, this book LOOKS useful, does it not?
It purports to be a book that "has been streamlined to focus on only the most essential biochemical concepts important to medical students, while maintaining the key pedagological features that have made the larger text (on which this book is supposed to be based) successful.

Well, that would be fine if it were true but what we have here is a failed biochemistry text that has been "dressed up" with these clever side dialogs of make believe people with names like Mr. "Di abetes".
Cute huh?BUT, what is not cute is that the textual explanations of those key biochemistry concepts that the book was supposed to be covering in a "streamlined" way, insteadbecome so wrapped up in the convoluted minutiae of the cellular and chemical processes involved that the key concepts, their hierarchical interrelationships, and their global biochemical, pharmacological and medical praxis become lost in a blaze of details and obscure diagrams. I have not seen the parent book on which this misbegotten offspring is based (nor do I want to) but what it looks like to me is that the publisher realized it had a losing text and then had little "patient stories" added to "dress up" the failed text book and this is the result.Usually there is one or two sentences in the lead paragraph explaining some concept and then they immediately launch into all sorts of details and minutiae which confuse and obscure the key concepts which will NOT be retained for future applicability, as they should have been.

If the student wanted the level of details that this book falls into, they might as well have bought the original book or a full fledged and better written and better illustrated textbook. If the student wanted a good overview which INTELLIGENTLY and carefully subsumes the details beneath well organized and thought out chapters then it is obvious that SOME OTHER book, not this one is needed.

For Timesavers not Great for Bookshelves.

3-0 out of 5 stars Probably fine for the USMLE, not so good for the miniboard
Used this book for the first year miniboard in med school. It was a fine review.Nothing spectacular.

2-0 out of 5 stars Low yield, very dense book
I had the misfortune of not taking medical school biochemistry in my first year, so I attempted to cram all of biochemistry in a few days using this book. The books was incredibly dense, went into the pathways in incredible detail, and was not particularly helpful for highlighting the important concepts tested on USMLE Step I. I would definitely use another book for Step I review, but I might use this if I had to take a rigorous biochemistry course.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too old
Buy the new one. The older version (Version 3) is far inferior to the new one (Version 4). Regardless neither version was extremely helpful or relative to my class, however they might come in handy when studying for boards (I am keeping my book till then).

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent but Rapid Review is Better
This book is not bad but for Board review stick with Goljan and get the Rapid Review. For class there is not enough detail so I would stick with Lippincott's Biochemistry
