Editorial Review

Product Description
Traditionally, scholars have used Hagley to study the history of business and technology, but in the 1990s, they have begun to use Hagley's collections to examine such issues as gender and the workplace, domesticity, female entrepreneurs, engendering business, gender and consumption, and fashion in the women's clothing industry. This guide reinterprets the Hagley collections within the context of women's history, making them more accessible to researchers in Women's Studies. The volume describes over 300 manuscript, archival, and pictorial collections, covering such subjects as 18th- and 19th-century women in France and America, the leisure class, employment and entrepreneurship, the culture of consumption, and benevolence, reform, religion, and politics. ... Product Description
Mary Kingsley (1862-1900) is one of the best known Victorian women travellers, whose solo adventures in West Africa made her a celebrity in England. This, her second book, published in 1899, was an instant best-seller. She travelled extensively, engaging in trade both to fund her trip and to get to know the African people, rather than merely observing as an outsider. Some of her views were considered controversial - she opposed the attempts by missionaries to impose European culture on native people, and defended polygamy and even slavery. She opposed direct colonial rule, and wanted Africans to have more self-determination. Her observations and interests are wide-ranging, and she showed an acute and sympathetic understanding of West African culture and society. 5-0 out of 5 stars Talk about "the white man's burden...."by RockyIII
"West African Studies" by Mary Kingsley is a coming together of ideas that germinated from many "loose" writings of West Africa or Equitorial Africa from early colonial times, when Africa truly was "the white man's burden", to post colonialism. The reader comes away from the book waiting for each country or territory to evolve and start with a new constitution based on the old beliefs "sold" to the people as what they want or really need.It is a trying read that swings the pendulum from tribal hates to new found friends.I for one would not recommend the writing to anyone between seven (7) to seventy (70)....let alone thirteen (13) younger or older. Thanks Mary ... Product Description
The first part of this book presents a translation into English of the Hebrew compilation Sefer Abavat Nashim, the Book of Woman's Love, compiled in the late Middle Ages and preserved in a single copy of the work from Catalonia-Provence. Its contents are concerned with magic, sexuality, cosmetics and gynecology — areas of knowledge essentially, though not exclusively, related to women. The second part is a historical study of Jewish women's lives and experiences during the late Middle Ages in the Mediterranean West. The object is to restore value to feminine knowledge and practices that were significant then and remain so today. The author focuses on the relation between women and medicine, and examines both women's knowledge and knowledge of science and scientific knowledge about women. This pioneering work makes a valuable contribution to the history of Jewish knowledge and Jewish women during the Middle Ages, and also makes a substantial contribution to the history of medicine. ... Product Description
Lady Jane Francesca Wilde (1821-1896) is today best known as the mother of Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), but in her lifetime was famous in her own right as a fervent supporter of Irish Nationalism. After the death of her husband in 1876, Lady Wilde wrote to support herself, her other works including essays, literary criticism and travel writing. She was also a strong supporter of feminism and the campaign for female suffrage and legal rights. This volume, first published in 1893, contains a collection of essays on various topics of importance to Lady Wilde, including feminism, good manners and aesthetic clothing, with short biographies of Irish Nationalist leaders. This volume was Lady Wilde's last published work, and provides a valuable example of her writing style and the influence of the aesthetic movement on social behaviour. The means by which women and children are most often subjected to victimization are discussed here, along with the causes and the legal avenues available. Part One examines family issues, including child abuse, domestic violence, and missing or abducted children, and Part Two examines their sexual exploitation. Part Three explores violent crimes against children (e.g., murder, rape and assault), while Part Four is a study of violence against women.
