Ring of Bright Water
I read this book years ago and have never forgotten it. When I started ordering books on Amazon this was one of the first.I am reading aloud to my husband and he is enjoying so much.I ordered one on tapefor my son. Gavin Maxwell is a great author,even if he is a bit hard to read aloud because the words he uses are not everyday ones.I recommend it.

Love Song to Scotland
This is one of those books that will stay in your mind long after you finish it. Maxwell was a masterful writer who penned in this book both a love song to Scotland and a primer on otters as pets.In one word, after you read this book, don't.Don't try to pin down an otter.Even if your home is on a craggy little island in the north of Scotland and surrounded by a ravine.Don't.Read the book and you'll see why not.

Ring of Blood
I`ve just finished the unedited version. The first third is mostly dull description of a Scottish shore area. The rest, well, i`m of two minds about that. I`ve had multiple dogs for many years and could , myself, bear criticism for my former efforts at not well balancing their freedom and safety. That being the case I still have real problems with the way the author handled animals : he did not attend the death or funeral of his dog, did not give his first otter a funeral, was so impractical and for such an amount of time about the way he allowed Mig ( beloved 2nd otter ) to run wild that he caused his death despite several incidents that should have made him rethink what he was doing. Worse yet he took on more wild animals after Mij`s death because he " had to have animals " which really trashed the memory of Mij ( whose body was not recovered ) in my opinion. More otters died before he acquired another and he even justified shooting wild birds to feed a baby wildcat ! I know the miserable fate of Edal ( 3rd otter ) he had at the end of ROBW and I`m aware of the efforts he made to accomodate Mij , but he disappointed me. I`m about to start the remainder of the trilogy.

Other Books
There aren't too many otter books around, and this one is pretty serious.The story of a man's love for and relationship with the furry little swimmers.

He looks after and befriends them, and the book is an interesting and occasionally moving account of his life as affected by these entertaining animals.

These hotspots of biological wealth deserve our immediate attention and care. When I began this project two years ago, I purposely chose these places because they are where I like to photograph the more remote and unknown, the better. Well, how about Bali and Florida? This was another good book in WHI. It was interesting to get to know Cade's mom, and Honi sounded like a nice pony. I enjoy the WHI series and think they're better than Phantom Stallion.

Boundary Waters: The Grace of the Wild, two books for the price of one (whether you like it or not)
It's hard to give one rating to Boundary Waters: The Grace of the Wild (The World as Home).On the one hand, the vibrant descriptions of the unparalleled natural world of the book's namesake region are worthy of five stars, hands down.Were the majority of words between the covers devoted to the appreciation of the tactile world in which the author traversed, this book would rank with the best 'man in the wild' writings out there.But just when I'd start taking root in the author's passionately described woods and waters, an uninvited editorial diatribe would douse my tranquil embers.

It's not that I disagreed with Mr. Gruchow's societal observations - I actually agreed with him almost entirely throughout - I simply would have preferred factual accounts of his travels through the Boundary Waters - which I erroneously assumed referred entirely to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (a quarter of the book is spent on an island in Lake Superior) - instead of rambling opinions claiming wilderness essentially ceases to exist in today's world.I can't disagree with Mr. Cruchow's dominant claim, but I'm less interested in his social commentary and more interested in his experiences in the allegedly nonexistent wilderness.

The author cannot be faulted for writing the book he wanted to write, but potential readers should know up front that only a portion of the book will sweep one away to the boundary waters.That portion is great, but there are considerable digressions along the way.

A mirror for the BWCWA
Whether you're an old voyager with a canoe paddle as worn as a river rock or someone who's just curious about the Boundary Waters of Minnesota, Gruchow's book will speak to you. The book is well-crafted, and each wordmust have been hand selected, but the stories still have the feel of acampfire yarn told softly over dying embers. Like the Boundary Waters, andnature itself, this book is at times profound, often educational,frequently beautiful, personally revealing, surprisingly hilarious, andalways captivating. The Boundary Waters don't disappint, and neither doesGruchow.

Fun Ideas in a Fun Series
My son, who is 5, really enjoys this series from his school library. In fact he's brought this particular book home twice. He can't read it himself yet but really enjoys the crafts and the little facts about the animals. If I weren't afraid of running out of room in my home we'd have made more of the crafts. We especially liked the prickly sea urchins and the ocean-in-a-bag. (It just cracks me up that it involves hair gel!) I'd peg the book more for at-home use than in-class, more for a homework project idea than an in-class thing to make.

Teachers beware
For the price that I paid for the book, I was disappointed in the content.I was expecting it to contain many, many interesting craft ideas for Marine Biology, appropriate for upper elementary/enrichment.
