Excerpt: Volleyball in the United States is popular with both male and female participants of all ages. In fact, almost all high schools and colleges in the United States have female volleyball teams; and most regions of the country have developmental programs for all ages as well. While many areas of the country are forming male teams and development programs, there are still fewer opportunities for male athletes to play volleyball in the United States. See volleyball As a professional sport, volleyball has had limited success in the United States. Numerous attempts have been made to start professional indoor women's volleyball leagues. In 1987, the latest attempt went bankrupt due to lack of fan interest and hence advertiser interest. Two-man and two-woman professional beach volleyball leagues have done better, most notably the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP), but none have gained a wide following that would get them consistent coverage by the major television networks. In 2004 and again in 2005, NBC aired the Nissan Championship series, with Fox Sports carrying the majority of the season. It is thought that one of the reasons for limited coverage is the small stadium audiences that beach volleyball competition attracts, which convey a degree of unpopularity to television audiences. Part of the reason for such small stadium audiences is the difficulty of erecting high stands on loose sand. Those trying to make beach volleyball succeed as a professional sport are trying to pattern it after professional tennis. Those seeking to make indoor volleyball a professional sport are trying to pattern it after professional basketball. Some think a po...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2905892 ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tree Guide for Los Angeles
Great for a budding naturalist.I live in Los Angeles and became inquisitive about all the native and non-native trees we have throughout the city.Since L.A. is a rather unique environment where there has been so much importation of non-native species, I grew curious as to which trees are actually California natives.I use this as a quick reference guide whenever I'm intrigued by a tree I'll randomly spot in someone's yard or along the sidewalks. At work there are two rows of trees that I had been trying to figure out for the longest time.Sure enough, I was able to match the leaf sample I took to the sketches in the book and identify them as California Sycamores. The book offers identification of trees by their trunk, leaves, fruits, and silhouettes. There is also zoning maps of where you can find these trees in Southern California as well as how to care for them (water, sunlight, dormancy, etc).Let's face it, Southern California (and especially Los Angeles), is always strapped for water and at risk of getting way too hot.Learning about and planting more California native trees will not only help stabilize the water supply but also provide much better shade than palm trees (thereby lessening the "urban heat island" effect of excess heat from pavement) and also provide naturally fire-resistant foliage.Just my two cents... ... Excerpt: The Tunisia national football team (Arabic: ), nicknamed Les Aigles de Carthage (The Eagles of Carthage), is the national team of Tunisia and is controlled by the Fédération Tunisienne de Football. They have qualified for four FIFA World Cups, the first one in 1978, but have yet to make it out of the first round. Nevertheless, they created history in that 1978 tournament in Argentina by becoming the first African side to win a World Cup match, beating Mexico 31. They also held defending champions West Germany to a goalless draw before bowing out. It took them 20 years to return to the finals but they have since qualified for the past three tournaments in succession, in 1998, 2002 and 2006. They were the only African team to appear at the 2002 and 2006 tournaments 2002 qualifiers Senegal, Cameroon, Nigeria and South Africa were replaced by Ivory Coast, Angola, Ghana and Togo, who were all first-time qualifiers. Tunisia also won the African Nations Cup in 2004, for the first time in their history, when they hosted the tournament. Tunisia's first World Cup was the 1978 competition held in Argentina. They created history by becoming the 1st African team to win a World Cup game, defeating Mexico 31. An unlucky 10 defeat to Poland followed, but The Eagles Of Carthage then held European giants West Germany to a 00 draw. But that wasn't enough to send them through to the knockout rounds. Despite that tournament being one of Tunisia's finest, they fail...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1029953 ... Read more

Chapters: Danish Handball Coaches, Danish Volleyball Coaches, Anja Andersen, René Wenzel, Ulrik Wilbek, Thor Munkager, Erik Veje Rasmussen, Jan Pytlick, Jens Larsen, Peter Bredsdorff-Larsen. Excerpt:National team caps and goals correctas of 13 January 2009. Anja Andersen (born February 15, 1969 in Odense, Denmark) is a female handball player known for both her skills as an offensive player, her strong temper and courage to make dramatic scenes and daring tricks during a match. She has played 133 matches for the Danish national handball team for women and has scored 726 goals. Anja Andersen was an important part of the renaissance in Danish handball during the 1990s. Her strong temper and impressive skills afforded everybody an opinion and after the first gold medal at the European championship in 1994 the national team affectionately earned the nickname "the iron ladies" and status of national sports heroes. Although the national handball team of the 1990s had many profiles it is undisputed that Anja Andersen was the most prolific and controversial. Although nobody questioned her skills, her temper, causing numerous expulsions from high profile matches, was an issue of some debate. At the 1996 Olympics the coach, Ulrik Wilbek, briefly banned her from the team due to disputes of playing style and behavior on the floor. It was also Anja Andersen who introduced handball to true showmanship. Greatly influenced by basketball and notably the Harlem Globetrotters she invented a playing style aimed at the audience rather than the opposing team. After her retirement as an active player she organized a "dream team" of the best female handball players in 2000 and 2001 which played a selected Danish team. The "dream team" matches was a success but they stopped ... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=331386 ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A History of the 1984 USA Volleyball Team
Doug Beal tells us what it was like to be the coach (or a member) of the 1984 team.He is quite candid concerning his dislike of Sinjin Smith and the other "beach players", and explains why he made the decisions he did.
This is NOT an instructional book; you won't find out how to spike better from this. You will, however, be amazed at some of the things you learn about Karch Kiraly, Steve Timmons, and the rest of the players of the first USA volleyball team to win the Gold Medal. ... Read more

Product Description
Sarah Kaunakanui has returned home to Hawaii with high hopes.A major scholarly presentation and the announcement of a PBS special based on her research will solidify her academic standing. She expects progress on a job offer that will bring her back home permanently, and that holds out the prospect of a richer personal life.

But two separate groups have targeted her for the same reason: her research into the history of French exploratory voyages to the Pacific risks exposing a long-held secret. One group she has heard of but laughs at the idea it really exists – the Priory of Sion. The other has succeeded in keeping its existence unknown for centuries.

Lured away to Paris by the promise of French aid to the PBS special, Sarah is terrified that someone wants to kill her.And astounded by the story of the woman who saves her.But immensely pleased that a handsome detective from Honolulu has arrived to protect her from the woman who had saved her.

The Priory of Sion? The Society of Dracul?Coded chambers?Confusing maps? How can a true-to-life, epic tale from the age of Pacific exploration be mixed up with these? And why is she spirited off to Transylvania and the birthplace of Vlad Tepes for temporary safekeeping?A lot of questions to answer. And the only solution is to head off around the world, following the tracks of that 19th century voyage of which she is the world’s expert, looking for some unknown treasure in some unknown place.Slowly, carefully, reinterpreting the historic legacy of that voyage.Until she finally realizes that in during her years of research she had overlooked a real conspiracy and coded messages in the record of the voyage that makes the fictional tales of the Priory of Sion absolutely meaningless. And gives a new meaning to the origin of the name, The Rose Line, one of the key element of Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code.
