5-0 out of 5 stars volleyball book
this is a usefull book for beginners specially if you need to know soem aorkouts for improvement in volleyball.

2-0 out of 5 stars Never played volleyball before?
Now I realize that I have had more experience in volleyball then most people but this book was insulting to my intelligence. If you are a knowledgeable player turned coach then don't waste your money. Many of the notions are outdated and many of drills a five year old could invent. This book was written by great volleyball minds, but for some reason it falls short in all areas. If you are a new to this sport as a coach or player then this book is great for you. I gave it two stars because there was one clever drill in it that I will use. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for New Coaches
Great for a new volleyball coach.Does not offer to much for the modified levels, but is great for JV and Varsity.

3-0 out of 5 stars It not usefull
some of the drills design so so primitive may apply for 12'year division, another word, "it is not the game like".

The earlier version of "101 Volleyball Drills" that better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed!
I am a new head coach of a High School Varsity program and I needed something I could quickly reference when I saw my team or a team in my program struggling with a part of the game. Not only is it wonderful for planning my own practices, but it has been easy to share with my JV and Freshman coaches when they needed help with certain skills. I would recommend this book to anyone struggling to keep practices engaging and fresh for their team.

4-0 out of 5 stars Many Drills
I use many of these drills for my Freshman and JV teams.A lot of them are too complicated for this level but would proabably be good for advanced club teams, varsity and college. This is a good resource for coaches at all levels.

4-0 out of 5 stars Drills, drills, and more drills
Coach Martin is a hoot.I had the pleasure of sitting in a session in a coaches seminar where she was one of the featured speakers. She is energetic, smart, entertaining and knows a whole lot about volleyball. She is the head women's coach at Central Missouri Stat U and has been there since forever.

The problem is that it is really difficult to translate all that she embodies into a book.Don't get me wrong, the drills are awesome and they are presented nicely, but that is what you would expect from a drill book. But, the sense of fun, the way she conveys the knowledge, that is kind of lost in the translation. The main thing I like about this is that the skill level progresses with each drill. So if you are dying for some new drills, here is a bunch, but make sure that they suit your needs.Another good point is that these drills are easily adaptable, so it is easy for coaches to change them to fit their own needs.

I just wish they could package Coach Martin's dynamic personality and enthousiasm into a book.Oh well.... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Its ok
I thought this book was OK.It is a large bookbut doesn't contain many specifics to volleyball. There are a lot of good general sports principles but when it come to actual drills and plays this book is slightly lacking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it. Love it! Love it!!
I played high school volleyball for one of these authors, so I grew up playing all of the drills and games in this book.I am now a college coach myself & I STILL use this book as a reference guide when I go to plan out a practice.Your athletes will love the different games included in the book that put a different spin on the regular game of volleyball.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good resource...
As the subtitle "Building a Winning Team" implies, the book touches on the various aspects required to building a team. The authors do an admirable job of providing a wealth of information across a broad spectrum of topics. If you're interested in a general guide with the basics this is the book for you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Book talk
Win one for Sandra is about a girl Elizabeth who joins a beach volleyball team at her middle school. Elizabeth doesn't like this girl Kimberly because she is snobby and thinks she is the center of attention. She shows of and nobody has the chance to show and shine to impress their coach because Kimberly takes over. Elizabeth decides to throw Sandra the volleyball coach a baby shower. When Elizabeth gets to practice she tells Mandy her great idea about throwing Sandra a baby shower but, Mandy told Elizabeth that Kimberly was already going to have a shower for her.

The time to shine was right before the California games and at the game. The girls had everything it took for the games a great coach, great servers, and fast volleys. But they always argued and would need to put everything aside to win the tournament.

I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anybody. If you really like volleyball this is inspiring book and really fun to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elizabethin Vollyball in California Games
It's like Jessica goes For The Gold, but it's Elizabeth and she's in Volleyball. Kimberly is the Captain of the team. She is very bossy, but the coach Sandra Kimbali thinks that they can make it into the olympics. Kimberly's bossyness makes them fight, untill Sandra collapses on the beach. She goes into labor. She had Christopher a few weeks early, and they dedicate all their matches to her. They do win and when she gets out of the hospital,She does watch them, with Christopher.

4-0 out of 5 stars SOO worth it!
In the same series as Jessica Goes For the Gold, this book is even better,it is excellent. This time it is Elizabeth playing to win and the sport is volleyball.

5-0 out of 5 stars It was a touching, funny, serious, cool and great!
I loved this book. Elizabeth Wakefield is my favorite person to read about in the Sweet Valley Series. Everyone on the team is trying to impress the coach, Sandra Kimbali. Soon they're competing against eachother! They all think they're the most hard workers. Then Sandra colapses! They've got to win the finals- for Sandra and her two-month early baby, baby Christopher. They try to be a team-and it pays off! I won't spoil the rest for you. Read it for yourself. -Anna Catherine Hycla ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Public lending libraries will find it a popular choice
Misty: Digging Deep in Volleyball and Life comes from a two-time Olympic gold medal winner and offers a vivid autobiography documenting her childhood and behind-the-scenes moments of her Olympic victories. From personal challenges she's never publicly acknowledged before to personal challenges, this is a 'must' for sports libraries and collections where Misty's name is already well known. Public lending libraries will find it a popular choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Eyes Got Misty (Pardon the Pun)
Misty May-Treanor is one of the most successful professional volleyball players in the history of the sport. She's won over 100 tournaments, two Olympic gold medals, numerous accolades, etc. etc.

I have been a fan of May-Treanor since the 1990s. I immediately pre-ordered my copy of her autobiography via Amazon.com. I wanted to compare her biography to other notable volleyball legends, Sinjin Smith and Karch Kiraly.

Overall, I would say her autobiography supplanted Smith and Kiraly's efforts as my top favorites to the top spot. Without giving away too many details, her book offers insight into her upbringing, personal life with her husband (pro baseball player, Matt Treanor), moments of greatness and sadness (you might want to have tissues near you) as well as offering life lessons.

This is a wonderful and inspirational book for any sports fan (especially young women).

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting
I love Misty May Treanor and I am still working my way through the book.I thought I would fly through it based on enjoying her story.Instead, I find I am flying through it because there is a lot of repetition. So far, a lot of statistics of Misty's personal volleyball highlights (number of digs, kills, spikes, sets, etc).It is somewhat interesting but it reads like a lot of the "jock" books do.Not a lot of depth. It seems like every page she repeats what a gracious, caring and giving person she is.I already knew that and don't need to read it on every page.Hoping for a surprise in the book and will update my review if anything changes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!
I find that one of the best ways to judge books is by the "bother your spouse" factor.Typically my wife is reading some book on a topic that I don't care for, and she'll interrupt me "Can I read you a passage?" or quote me some one-liner from her book that she found interesting.Over the course of a novel, she'll typically "bother" me, let's say, five times. My response is typically to chuckle, more often than not, just to humor her.I rarely "bother" her when I'm reading.

I found Misty's new book "Digging Deep..." so entertaining that for the first time I found myself "bothering my spouse"frequently. It seemed like I "bothered" her over 10 times, to share a line or a story from the book. Some of it was sharing insights into the depths of the volleyball world, and some of it was just hilarious stories that Misty has experienced.

Misty's book reminds me of the promo line from an old movie entitled "Stuart Saves His Family".The line goes:"You'll laugh because it's not your family, and you'll cry because it is."I did find myself laughing out loud, as well as having tears well up in my eyes while reading Misty's book.

I highly recommend Misty's book for its unprecedented "bother your spouse" factor. It's "bother your spouse" factor is so high that my wife can't wait to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Misty - The Untold Story
Misty's new book is a must-have.Who would have ever thought that behind her apparent happy-go-lucky personna belies a troubled upbringing? Her rise to pop star status, despite her difficult chidhood upbringing, is a phenonemenal story. For more insider details about her life, and that of other players on the professional beach volleyball tour, check out the groundbreaking book, "Order On The Court", that exposes this fascinating sport's struggles, while highlighting its triumphs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book!
If you are at all a volleyball person, this book is required reading. It's that simple.Karch was called the best indoor player in the world and proved himself the best beach player as well. What's better than hearing the story of the greatest player the sport has yet known from his own lips?

5-0 out of 5 stars The Man With the Midas Touch
Karch Kiraly is simply the best volleyball player ever to play the game. So, of course, this read was very insightful, heartwarming, and humourous at times. I couldn't put my copy down at all. I have read it twice.

I saythat Karch is the man with the "midas touch" because everythinghe touches is golden; his life with family and friends, the kind of rolemodel he is to so many, and lastly for his volleyball accomplishments. Ithas been a pleasure to follow his career as well as read about his life inhis book entitled, "The Sand Man."

I would encourage anyvolleyball fan to pick up this highly recommended book and to have itsigned by Karch if they see him at an event soon!

Best of luck to Karchin the future and keep writing because your fans love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiration to an English player!
I knew this was to be my Xmas pressie this year and so it was frustrating waiting for the 25th! As soon as I unwrapped it I couldn't put it down; in the end my wife became annoyed and told me that I would get no lunch untilI put the book away. This book is a great read with lots of bits andpieces. There are various inspiring stories that make me want to get downto a beach (yes we do have them in England) and restart training. Living inthis volleyball deprived nation it's great to have something like this bookto get me through the long and dark winter. Just buy the book it'sfabulous!Write to me! volleyball@tesco.net

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive Karch Kiraly book for all volleyball fans!
In basketball there's Jordan, in baseball it's Ruth, in Golf it's Nicklaus, auto racing's king is Richard Petty. In the world of indoor and beach volleyball one man stands alone at the top the mountain - that man isKarch Kiraly.

Karch Kiraly is the most decorated volleyball player in thehistory of the sport and at age 39, he's still the most feared name on thecourt. The Sand Man is the first book to truly capture this oftenmisunderstood icon of the AVP.

From his first tournament at age 15 to theAtlanta Olympic gold medal in 1996, Karch Kiraly is truly the greatestplayer ever to spike a volleyball. I can not begin to say how great thisbook was.

Laced with stories and photos, this book is the tied for numberone in my reviews of 1999. For the serious volleyball fan, this is the mustread of the year. Best of luck in Sidney in 2000 Karch!

5-0 out of 5 stars An in-depth look at the vollyball legend
When most people tune in to watch the AVP, they often notice one thing - some guy out there is wearing a pink hat.The man underneath that hat is, undoubtedly, the greatest volleball player to ever step on the court (orthe sand). This is the life story of Karch Kiraly and his accomplishmentsin life as well as on the court.Always a gentlemenly competitor, we getto see the few flare-ups and frustrations along with the glory of hisstoried career.Starting from birth and ending with last season's (1998)success with Adam Johnson, this book chronicles Karch's travels, his loves, the people he admires that came before, and his devotion to his children. 5-0 out of 5 stars People of all athletic abilities can play volleyball and will learn a lot from this book!
I'm sure you have and least had a glimpse at a couple of teams playing volleyball and would enjoy playing a game yourself, but you might be a bit worried you wouldn't know the rules or what is going on. It is a lot of fun if you've ever played.Perhaps even if you've played a casual game you may not know how many rules there are if you're going to play a "real" game.In this very thorough and exiting book you learn all there is to know about volleyball.Whether it is the first time or you have some experience you'll be in the know!

First of all, don't grab, hold or catch that ball.Players work at bouncing the ball over the net. When "two teams hitting the ball back-and-forth to each other is called a rally."That is when your team scores. The game is divided into three or fives sets. Each set is fifteen points. In this book you will learn about serving, side-out, international volleyball (they score differently), an attack line, the front court, the back court, the free zone, types of serves, volleying, a block, the spike, the offense, the defense, an ace, a fault a dump, an outside hit, antennae, tipping, rules, referees and beach volleyball. It's not really a complicated game at all and people of all athletic abilities can have a lot of fun playing.

I enjoyed reading this book and, as a very casual volleyball player, was unaware of some of the rules. For example, most casual teams will bounce that ball around until it hits the ground.I learned that "a team can only touch the ball three times before hitting it back to the opposition."Imagine that! There are great action photographs, informative sidebars, a glossary and an index.Everything you wanted to know about volleyball, casual or otherwise, is in this book.Have fun. . .summer is on its way! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Concept to Practice- Drill to Real
This little tactical and more strategy, the book and DVD definitely help season/club whom want to coach volleyball. The contents material between the Jr. HP to JR. Olympic; or CAP I to CAP II; or High School coach that had college volleyball level. You won't find much in depth about how to train a "setter - hand, footwork..." however when running a drill it will mention when the setter should do an eyes check.

You also can see how design a drill (big task of a coach) that close to game like, that means after a drill, the player "automatically reflex" in real game (I don't like the player try to apply).

Serve-receive strategies: different formation "W", "U".
Lengthy of pro-cons of serving techniques to me not really science because no data back up or does not make any different for player play in back row pass ball all year long (I were in 80 player no libero position).

Some of the drills are awesome that afterward you will have a insight how to tailor your own drills more effectively.

I highly recommend it for HS coach and Jr. volleyball club coach. Believe me you won't regret it, "money back guarantee".

4-0 out of 5 stars intermediate coaching aid
This book by the USAV is a good source for some intermediate strategy systems. Some higher level components also feature but more detail would be desirable.

The visual aid - DVD has some good footage so to let the coach see how drills work from the paper to an actual setting. It is a good source for coaches when considering what types of tactics to use in a game, seeing how drills work (without the tutorial in advance, like the ones seen on youtube), and some fundamental and timing issues in the way drills operate.

Another updated edition would be very much appreciated.

4-0 out of 5 stars good contribution
This is a good book for all trainers and coaches. The defensive and offensive sytems are well explained and the added DVD presents clear demonstrations. The book however may havebeen written for USA educative as no reference is made to the use of the libero in both reception and defensive. The chapter on spread stategy therefore becomes incomprehensible as compared to practices in modern volleybal where the libero plays important role . ... Read more

Chapters: Danish Handball Coaches, Danish Volleyball Coaches, Anja Andersen, René Wenzel, Ulrik Wilbek, Thor Munkager, Erik Veje Rasmussen, Jan Pytlick, Jens Larsen, Peter Bredsdorff-Larsen. Excerpt:National team caps and goals correctas of 13 January 2009. Anja Andersen (born February 15, 1969 in Odense, Denmark) is a female handball player known for both her skills as an offensive player, her strong temper and courage to make dramatic scenes and daring tricks during a match. She has played 133 matches for the Danish national handball team for women and has scored 726 goals. Anja Andersen was an important part of the renaissance in Danish handball during the 1990s. Her strong temper and impressive skills afforded everybody an opinion and after the first gold medal at the European championship in 1994 the national team affectionately earned the nickname "the iron ladies" and status of national sports heroes. Although the national handball team of the 1990s had many profiles it is undisputed that Anja Andersen was the most prolific and controversial. Although nobody questioned her skills, her temper, causing numerous expulsions from high profile matches, was an issue of some debate. At the 1996 Olympics the coach, Ulrik Wilbek, briefly banned her from the team due to disputes of playing style and behavior on the floor. It was also Anja Andersen who introduced handball to true showmanship. Greatly influenced by basketball and notably the Harlem Globetrotters she invented a playing style aimed at the audience rather than the opposing team. After her retirement as an active player she organized a "dream team" of the best female handball players in 2000 and 2001 which played a selected Danish team. The "dream team" matches was a success but they stopped ... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=331386 ... Read more
