2-0 out of 5 stars Could be better...
When I got this book, I was initially impressed. The texts Unschuld selects are interesting to be sure. The worst part is that it is very user UNfriendly. The texts are long, and finding the corresponding pinyin and translation is impossible. Additionally, this is not really a language teaching book. The author includes only the pinyin and a translation. There are no grammar explanations or any other explanations for that matter. There are some historical footnotes, but nothing that helped me read the texts. The reader is expected to figure it all out through the translation, making the book no more valuable than any other translation that includes characters. The more I *try* to work with this book, the less I like it. Unschuld is a great historian, but not a very good language teacher. I highly suggest Goodman's Classical Chinese Medical Texts: Learning to Read the Classics of Chinese Medicine (Vol. I) over this.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent intro to classical Chinese medical literature
This book gives short excerpts of classical texts, ranging from 90 BCE to 1891 CE, and presented in standard character chinese and Wade-Giles transliteration (which will annoy some, but many older dictionaries, using Wade-Giles, are much more useful than those produced in Maoist China, as the latter tend to avoid certain connotations of words that are significant to Chinese medical tradition), with vocabulary lists and English translation. The English translation clearly identifies words and phrases used to 'fill in the gaps' and smooth out the translation. The sixty texts are grouped by subject matter and well-chosen. There is an appendix on research aids, and a useful general glossary. This text is a bridge to the world of the classical texts for those who do not have the language skills to read them otherwise, and is a significant contribution to students of Chinese [traditional] medicine in the west.
The only drawback is the price - at (this price) it's almost outlandish, but it IS a useful book. ... Read more

Product Description
There has never been a book that exploits the power ofword roots as thoroughly as the Vocabulary Quick Reference. Itsaudience includes students studying for college entrance exams, teachers, libraries, medical students and practitioners, biologystudents, ESL students, and numerous others who don't fall into anyof these categories but just want to improve their vocabulary. TheVocabulary Quick Reference is the only book of its kind. It gives260 Greek and Latin word roots, which are listed in the primaryroot index at the beginning of the book. This book is unique inthat for each word root, it gives a complete list of words thatcontain that root. The keyword section is also unique in that itprovides a comprehensive alphabetical list of the most importantwords (keywords) from each definition. This list brings manyrelated words together so they can be studied together, as well asproviding a method for looking up a word through its meaning. Allwords that are related are referenced. Complete etymology andpronunciation are provided for each word.

Three-colored text is used for selective emphasis of criticalinformation. Red text indicates a very common word. This isespecially helpful to students studying for the SAT. The blue wordswithin each dictionary definition provide a shorter and easier-to-remember definition embedded within each complete definition andalso comprise the alphabetical list in the keyword section.

The clever organization of this unique book results in a vocabularylearning tool that is packed with information, yet is notintimidating.Amazon.com Review
English Vocabulary Quick Reference takes an innovativeapproach to word roots. To start with, there's the "Primary RootIndex"--a list of 260 essential word roots (including prefixesand suffixes), with definitions, language origin (Latin or Greek), andthe dictionary page number where it's featured. It's a handy, easilyaccessible "a-" to "zyg-" list, but the unusualquality of the reference lies in its dictionary. Color-coded (red forcommon words such as are likely to appear on SATs, blue keywords tohighlight succinct definitions), the dictionary presents more than7,000 words based on those roots. From "abiogenesis" to"zygote," etymologies and definitions elucidate each wordand encourage an understanding of the basic roots. This section isfollowed by a reverse dictionary of sorts--an alphabetical index ofthe keyword definitions. There's also an index of main entry words, and another index of 500 secondary roots that didn't make into the"Primary Root" list. Crutchfield's definitive book on wordroots--geared toward educators, students of medicine, and students ofEnglish--is a superb classroom resource and a worthwhile homereference as well. --Stephanie Gold ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Word Roots
This is a useful book if looking for these general words. Maybe I was not exactly sure of what I was looking for. I was looking for an etymology book with more Old Testament words. This book will be helpful in other areas of my studies. CS Jones

Wow.What an interesting vocabulary book.Obviously, the author has spent years of hard work writing this book.I love studying root words.Once you understand the root of the word, the rest is easy....Pterodactyl.. Pter=wing + dactyl=finger, gives you "winged finger".Helicopter... helico=circular + pter=wing, gives your "circular wing."This book really makes learning vocabulary fun and easy. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great but many archaic words
I used this book 10 yrs ago, when I was in India, while preparing for GRE. GRE students typically go for the Norman Lewis book which I feel is too thin on substance. This book ( Rosenblum) is fantastic, but may be a lot of archaic words need to be pruned, but hey the book was never written from a GRE test-takers point of view. Great Price.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life.
I bought this book when I was in college many years ago, probably to improve my score on a standardized test. Through this book I fell in love with words. It brought them to life. I learned that many words are simply a combination of easily learned prefixes, suffixes and roots. Knowing a few word components and I could decipher thousands of words that otherwise I would not know. I have bought many copies and given them away. I am back to buy a few more, one for my use and others to pass on. My original copy has become so worn and old the pages are brown and falling out, scribbled with notes and my own neologisms. This book played a part in my deciding to become a lawyer. Buy it even if you hate lawyers! It may change your life in some way also.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Vocabulary Book
This is without a doubt the best vocabulary book ever written. I disagree with the review entitled "Just Don't Buy This Book." That reviewer must have read a different book.

The book makes learning words fun by providing interesting and at times amusing stories that capture the meaning and derivation of words. The authors take you back and show you how the words came about. Significantly, the author's get their information across in an interesting way that made it hard for me to put the book down.

Examples are taken from many different areas so that readers are shown that theyhave only to go to current newspapers and view the sports, business, politics or the artsto immediately see how the words in this book can be found in everyday literature.

I am now on my second copy since the first one fell apart after many years hours of use.

I highly recommend this book and only wish that I had come across thebook sooner. The book is written in such a way that it could be used productively for self study, in grade school, high school or at the college level. If this last claim seems outrageous, try the book first at your local library before buying. You will be amazed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great vocabulary builder.
I actually looked up the words in this book online for extra sentences and i did find them being used in the new yorker, ny times, among others so they really aren't archaic. I just read a newsweek article on "Mr. Bean's" new movie and when they mentioned "we had to jettison the ...." i knew what they were talking about thanks to this book.
I like the way it groups stuff together to allow you to learn the words.
I'm a college student who doesn't have time for lots of things so i needed something that isn't boring and this books seems to serve the purpose.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great vocabulary builder!
Nurnberg and Rosenblum did a fine job putting together this book of vocabulary words. The different chapters focus on various themes or groups of words, including some from mythology. Some rather obscure and challenging terms are included, and I particularly liked that aspect of this publication. If you're looking for an entertaining vocabulary building book that includes more words than other competing items, then this is the ideal vade mecum for you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good product and good quality
I am a researcher in philosophy, and, although I study the philosophy of Charles Peirce, there are many influences that came from the Greek world, especially from Plato and Aristotle. For this reason, I intent to know greek a little better.
That material - Reading Greek series - is a fabulous guide for this purpose. The quality of the books is very good, even if it is used, and the delivery was quick, even taking into account the distance, because I live in São Paulo, Brazil.

Product Description
When R. Neville Johnston was shot three times in 1977, he died. But he came back knowing some things he hadn’t known before. That the universe is made of up of vibrations for one. And that some of the most meaningful vibrations are the words we use in everyday thought and speech. Obviously it behooves us to choose our words with care so we can create the life we want.

Hidden Language Codes is a book about thought. Where we go in life is directly related to our mastery and command of our thoughts and our language. In evolving, we naturally change the way we think. A method of accelerating this process is to change the very words we think with. This book is the key to learning words that will improve our lives and giving up the ones that hold us back. Learn to use power words—words that serve us well—such as "acceptance," "faith," even "MacGyver," and the key power word, "love." Those words that do not serve us well include "greed," "blame," "hard," and the poster child for disempowerment/slave thinking—"can’t."

Our language is full of unconscious triggers—the words we speak are making decisions for us, running us. As long as we continue to try, need, guess, want, whine, and victim our way through life, we sabotage our own goals and happiness. Never use these words again. Take charge of your thoughts and speech, and your life will follow suit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A jolt of self awareness
This book reminds us that every word we think, speak or write springs from an intention deep within us. We are free to choose to be aware of the power that our thinking has in creating our lives. Mr. Johnston gives the reader many insights concerning the intent hidden in words we commonly use and demonstrates how we can change our lives by changing our language.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books of all time
This book is for people who have already been introduced to concepts related to the science of mind. That said, it is a LIFE CHANGING BOOK.If you are a fan of Louise Hay's message, be prepared to go even deeper with Hidden Language Codes.Reading the book will awaken knowledge and power within you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hmmmm....
This book is mainly a long list of words and phrases ('doubt', 'fear', 'guilty', etc.) with 1-2 paragraph explanations about why you shouldn't ever say (or even think) them. (There's also a long list of words you should say). I tried hard to give it the benefit of the doubt--I enjoy studying languages and occult spirituality--but the writing is opaque and disjointed, and he doesn't seem to filter his thoughts at all. For instance: if you think we're living in "a male dominated society", that's just a figment of your imagination (you make it so by saying it). When someone asks you "why?" (about anything) the appropriate response is "You know why," and to give them any further information is to undercut them spiritually. (Johnston recommends against asking "why" in the first place.) But my favorite explanation was for the word "how": people who ask "how" reveal themselves as 'freaks' (yes, he uses that word!!) who are only concerned about the process of doing something. Asking "how" demotes you from 'human being' down to 'human doing'.
The further I read, the more I realized it was some sort of cult manual. A few parts toward the beginning are slightly intriguing, but the book is ultimately pretty useless to me. (I'm not cutting "how" and "why" out of my vocabulary!!!) I will be returning it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Encore! I gave this author 5 stars before and he's outdone himself!
Powerful, empowering and most compassionate is this milestone book. If you have read the original book, "Language Codes" before, this one is is greatly expanded and much more thorough. Nelville takes you aside and shows you the pitfalls of some inconspicuous areas of our language like a master would. As a reader, you are going to feel the shedding of those sticky self-fulfilling phrases and decadent clichés that have been since Gutenberg (or much earlier) strewn like landmines across the landscape of our consciousness. He delivers his points across so clearly andwith great humor. I was amazed at how many traps he had unearthed concealed almost unwittingly within our language, particularly those expressions that often escape casual scrutiny right under our noses. The result for me is a restored sense of clarity and vision buttressed by a sense of improved mindfulness.I read this book non-stop in one solid day feeling very satisfied but more relieved as if I had received a good session of psychotherapy of a lifetime. Read what he says about "victimese"! 5 stars for Nelville for such exposé on a stellarly daunting semantic subject! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New Student of Anglo-Saxon
A small, but useful book in Old English language, it provides the new student a supplement while under the teachings of a OE tutor. A good reference work for all students of Old English.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This book is *extremely* helpful. It's a high-frequency word list, meaning that it includes the most common words in Old English literature, and it's organized in an intuitive fashion: by roots.

The author suggests in the foreword that you start from the back of the book, by learning the first word in each root group, and then work through the rest of the book. I wish I had done that at the beginning of the semester. I just worked my way through that list (about 200 terms), and it made my course reading so much easier that I would pay $13.50 for that list alone.

Buy the book and put the words on flash cards. It's a lot of time invested up front, but it's saving me a tremendous amount of time because I'm using my glossary sooo much less.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't make me unlock my word-hoard on you! :)
This short but valuable book is a treasure trove for word lovers, amateur (and professional) etymologists, and fans of Old English language and literature. The book is essentially a word list of the most often-encountered words in the main body of the Old English literary corpus (primarily Beowulf, considering the length of the poem, but ranging across other works as well), arranged in order of frequency. Each entry offers a definition, common compounds and kennings, as well as cognates in Modern and Middle English and other related languages (e.g., German and Old Norse). Some entries are short and straightforward, while others reveal interesting etymological connections I hadn't been aware of before.

The book is more interesting than useful, however, which is why I gave it four stars instead of five. A great book to peruse for fun or leisure -- and probably very useful for new students of Old English -- but more seasoned students and scholars will exhaust its limited number of words quickly. And its brevity means that it's concerned only with the most common words, which seasoned scholars will probably already know well.

An excellent bathroom book -- and yes, I mean that as a compliment! :) The only strange thing is that the book, though published recently (or reprinted might be more accurate), looks as though it were typed on an old IBM Selectric II Typewriter (I recognize the typeface, because I used to use one of these myself :). A bit jarring in this day and age where computer-produced copy is the norm, but once you get used to it, it doesn't detract.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic presentation of good information
The volume of information in Word-Hoard is excellent, putting together conceptually and etymologically related words to condense the exercise of learning Old English vocabulary down. Each cluster of words has a write-up and individually the words are accompanied by grammatical details such as strength/gender, as well as all-important compounds made from the words.

All of this is typeset in dreary university typewriter font. For some, it will be an irritation but for others like myself who've delved into many such texts as part of a degree it may bring back fond memories. It's workable, let's leave it at that.

It's not an essential study book but it certainly adds its particular spice and works best alongside a good dictionary such as Bosworth/Toller or Clark. For those with an interest in Old English words it would be a lovely introduction to the vocabulary.

This slim work goes deep rather than broad, taking a close look at a few hundred of the OE words most frequently encountered in the extant literature. Each word's entry will include some modern and ancient language cognates, as well as shades of meaning and "philology nerd" points of interest. It's a marvelous book to dip into when brushing your teeth or waiting for your toast to pop up--every time you open it you'll come away with a deeper understanding than you had before, not only of OE, but of modern English as well. It's worth the price just for the discussion of the Anglo-Saxons' unfamiliar apprehension of the nature of colors. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Practical Purchase
As an English teacher, I teach students how to express themselves clearly, both orally and in writing. I am aware that the greater their vocabularies, the greater their abilities to express themselves. This book contains well-thought-out lessons. Each lesson has four pages: The first page has the words for that particular lesson, the lesson focus, simple sentences explaining the meaning of words, and cloze exercises (sentences containing a blank that the students must fill using one of the lesson words). Page two has the same lesson words again, one or more exercises focusing on definitions, and a writing assignment. The third page of each lesson includes the same lesson words again, two or three exercises focusing on affixes, other definitions, parts of speech, word roots (excellent!) or word structure. And the fourth page includes a puzzle, game, or other learning activity reinforcing the same vocabulary words. There is ample opportunity for students to use dictionaries and/or thesauruses, reinforcing that skill, also. Repetition bears learning, so this book is sure to bring positive results when properly utilized. There are a total of 18 lessons addressing words that have to do with school, reading, writing, textbooks, math/economics, social studies, government, science/experiments, study skills/tests, art, time, health/safety, citizenship, discussion, verbs, adjectives, and nouns. A complete word list is in the back of the book along with the key. This book will prove to be a definite asset to any fifth-grade class. Some fourth-grade students may be able to benefit from this book as well. ... Read more
