Product Description
Since 1998 eighty to ninety percent of the criminal and domestic violence arrests in this country have been men. In California alone, from 1988 through 1998 nearly 450,000 men have gone to jail. Think about it - nearly half a million men incarcerated. And while the numbers aren't as daunting in the rest of the country, the statistics are the same...80-90% of thousands of men have been arrested on what is often flimsy evidence. Although it has been known for years that women are equally violent in domestic relationships, and though it is often they, not the men who initiate the violence, through manipulation of the legal system, they are avoiding arrests. I know it, I lived it. A Call for InJustice recounts the real life story of how this happens. Through the lives of Jim and Jan Avery (not their real names) it exposes the process that has been unleashed upon men for the sins of people that have preceded them. A Call for Injustice is so unbelievably personal and incredibly honest that, to paraphrase one booklover, it nearly begs that you ask permission from the author to read it. ... Read more

Product Description

This book uses various theoretical perspectives to summarize what is known about the multiple causes of men's violence against women, and stresses the importance of identifying men's risk factors. The preliminary multivariate model identifies four content areas: macrosocietal; biological; gender role socialization; and relational factors to explain men's violence against women.

Within these four content areas the editors develop thirteen preliminary hypotheses about the causes of men's violence against women, which are critiqued by the contributors in the subsequent chapters.

Product Description
This important new book presents eye-opening documentation of the often-overlooked problem of domestic violence and murder. Alarming statistics show that in Massachusetts alone a spouse/partner murder occurs every 22 days, and approximately fifty percent of female homicide victims are murdered by their husbands or lovers. Women Murdered by the Men They Loved examines the critical problem of male violence against spouses and partners and society’s tendency to regard domestic violence as an insignificant problem. While the media publicizes only sensational cases, this powerful volume reveals that domestic murder is a worldwide problem affecting people of all educational and economic levels.

A readable, empowering book, Women Murdered by the Men They Loved assists women, their families, counselors, and medical and social service providers in avoiding and preventing violence in a realistic manner. This book goes beyond the limited literature available and provides tools for professionals to identify male violence, work with victims and potential victims, document evidence, and assist women and care providers in removing women from the “victim” category. Warning signs and predictors of male violence, recognition of controlling behaviors, cycles of violence, and societal factors enabling hidden violence in the home are described in detail in order to help eradicate such violence. Focusing on patterns of domestic violence and negating the belief that the woman’s behavior provokes violence, this valuable book aides professionals strategies to combat domestic violence that can also be used by women, the community, medical care providers, and professionals in the legal system. ... Product Description
This text offers a balance of clinical and social psychological theory and research, as well as prevention and intervention techniques with the purpose of understanding and ultimately ending gender-based violence. The authors address several forms of violence, including rape, intimate partner violence, stalking, and sexual harassment in a contemporary linguistic style carefully crafted to avoid victim blaming. Although most men do not perpetrate violence against women, such violence is not a “women’s” issue; it will take the strength and courage of both women and men to solve this human issue.

This book moves full circle in its coverage of the topic as it explores the silent epidemic of men’s violence against women, the grave consequences of this violence on both individuals and society, and the historical and current foundations that serve to both criminalize and tolerate men’s violence against women. The authors describe a variety of efforts to treat both offenders and victims highlighting both their vital importance and their insufficiency in preventing violence. The final part of the book contains descriptions of model violence prevention approaches and techniques for implementing these programs. Readers are empowered as they discover how they can be part of the solution.

Men's Violence Against Women is intended as a text for courses in gender-based violence in a variety of disciplines including psychology, sociology, and women's, men's, and/or gender studies. The book is also a valuable resource for college and community gender-based violence prevention and intervention program providers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars studying societal costs
The book takes a sober look at both the offenders and the victims. For the former, models are proposed to understand the attitudes that can arise in groups that led to or provide favourable grounds to their behaviour. The role of alcohol is examined. A non-trivial factor in many circumstances. The psychology of stalkers is also covered.

For victims, or survivors, as the book terms them, there are costs. Including very real financial costs of health care. Plus the intangible but all too real issues of post traumatic stress disorder and depression.

Various interventions and preventative measures are mooted. Some are based in involving men in being aware of the full consequences of actions. And in trying to adjust the social norms to make some actions unacceptable. ... Read more

Product Description

One of the most burning debates in the domestic violence field is over the effectiveness of batterer programs and how to improve them. Batterer Intervention Systems responds to this debate with research from a multi-site evaluation of batterer programs—the most comprehensive and extensive evaluation to date. It critiques current experimental evaluations, exposes the complex issues of evaluation, and presents alternatives to assessing effectiveness. A four-year follow-up of program participants reveals a surprising de-escalation of abuse, a subgroup of unresponsive repeat reassaulters, and the difficulty in identifying the most dangerous men. Conventional batterer counseling appears to be appropriate for the vast majority of men. Most of all, the book shows that the "system" matters and can be improved through some straightforward adjustments.

Product Description
Using a comparative method to determine how violence against women differs from violence against men, Felson illustrates not only that violence against women is less frequent than violence against men but also that our culture and legal system treat it more harshly. Contrary to the claims that our courts "blame the victim" in cases of violence against women, the author shows that the tradition of protection of women sometimes produces the opposite effect, and that it is due process and not sexism that makes, for instance, rape cases seem biased against women. This powerful book encourages all readers, be they psychologists, lawyers, social scientists, or concerned lay people, to question preconceptions about gender and violence. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Close but not quite
While Richard Felson (2002) argues that mysoginy has no relaitonship to domestic violence, his argument is internally inconsistent in terms of both statistics and substance. First, the numerical data he presents often contradict his conclusions. For example, Felson states that "women are just as likely as men to be the victims of violence from their partners, at least in Western Countries." This statement directly contradicts his own research findings (p. 37) and Bureau of Justice Statistics (Craven, 1997) which which he provides that show that 20.7% of women are victimized by intimates compared to only 2.8% of males (Felson, 2002, p. 49; see also page 111 for another example).

On a substantive level, Felson frequently conflates the trivial with the traumatic. For example, Felson argues that women's greater use of complaining and anger in relationships "casts doubt on the idea that men's violence against their wives reflects a greater desire to control them" (Felson, 2002, p. 104). Felson thus compares complaining with a "tooth loosening assault intended to punish, humiliate, and terrorize" (Dobash, Dobash, Wilson, & Daly, 1992, p. 75). Note also that the radical feminist theory of domestic violence which Felson purports to critique never states that men have "a greater desire to control" their wives than do their wives but rather contends that battering is a technique by which men control women. Felson thus fails to address the central feminist proposition that battering results in increased power and control for men.

These errors in fact and logic re-occur throughout Felson's work and completely undermine his argument which is unfortunate because this is a topic which deserves careful, well-documented, and thoughtful consideration. ... Read more

Product Description

The Batterer as Parent takes the reader inside of homes affected by domestic violence, imparting an understanding of the atmosphere that battering men create for the children who live with them. Bancroft and Silverman show how partner abuse affects each relationship in a family, and explains how children’s emotional recovery is inextricably linked to the healing and empowerment of their mothers. The authors cover the important but often-overlooked area of the post-separation parenting behaviors of men who batter, including their use of custody litigation as a tool of abuse. Readers also are guided in evaluating change in the parenting of men who batter, assessing risk to children from unsupervised visitation, and supporting the emotional recovery of children. Although the book is written primarily for professionals, its accessible style makes it engaging and useful for abused mothers and anyone else wishing to assist children exposed to battering.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Batterer as Parent
This book highlights serious problems in how children of abusers are frequently victimized in the court system, as a result of inadequately trained advocates. It is thoroughly researched, with several pages of professional references cited.A must-read for anyone involved in these custody issues!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is excellent and provides needed insight into the inner workings of the family effected by abuse.
This book really captured the essence of what has happened in our home for so many years. It provides solid reasoning for why my children's feelings are so twisted and their memories so warped. It has been helpful for my recovery because it has made clear and spelled out those things that I could never make sense of. This book would be great for helping to enlighten judges, custody evaluators and many women and their children who've been victimized by a batterer. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars In a Class by Itself
I have read several books and articles on domestic violence, custody evaluations, and family recovery from domestic violence. This is the first title in that arc of subject area that presented a detailed and accurate picture of what constitutes a batterer and the batterer's effect on partner and children. There were no equivocations, no excuses, no back-pedaling to pander to the popular view that victims are either actually responsible for their and their children's plights, or they are fabricating to achieve some selfish end. I found a brief, but comforting refuge between the pages of this very insightful and thorough study. I highly recommend it to every custody evaluator and family court judge (and every family member who was been battered emotionally, physically, verbally, economically, or in any other way.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book in Print about Batterers
In the middle of a very ugly divorce, I found this book to be the best.It is simiple to read with real live situations and real research. Not based on textbook learned behaviors. It gives a very realistic view of some very ugly situations. It was like reading my life story with insights on why my divorce got so ugly with a man whom I thought I loved.

This is a must read for every emotionally charged divorce.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This book succintly provides critical information for judges, therapists, parent evaluators/GALs, and most importantly parents trying to protect their children from harm.It highlights the many misconceptions present in the legal system that enable abusers to continue to victimize their children and spouses, and explains how these situations should be addressed, backed by data to support the authors' conclusions. This is a credible well-written book that provides a rational counter to the awful theories of Richard Gardner. ... Product Description

This exciting and unique new book offers a post-modern analysis linking the contemporary social crisis of masculine subjectivity and the law and order crisis over escalating violence. In doing so it examines the major biological, psychological, sociological, and anthropological theoretical models of masculinity and violence, and formulates an integrated theoretical approach to the relationship between violence and masculinity. In essence, the book focuses on violence as a gendered activity - specifically a masculine activity.

Early chapters define and theorize both violence and masculinity, and subsequent chapters focus on representations of violence and masculinity in popular culture. Familiar but insightful examples from cartoons, fiction, television, and the movies are used to illustrate the construction of masculinity in popular culture as well as the range of images of violence that dominate our senses.

Drawing from diverse literatures and traditions, this engaging book is directed to advanced undergraduate and graduate students as well as professionals in Criminology, Legal Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Gender Studies, and Cultural Studies. Because of its theoretical aspects, it will be of interest to students and scholars in the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada, as well as in the United States.
