    Extractions: Location Across the Hawaiian island chain in the past 200 years, eruptions have been limited to Kilauea, Mauna Loa, and Hualalai volcanoes on the Island of Hawai`i. But those living or traveling on Maui can also see evidence of very recent volcanism. Maui hosts its own active volcano, East Maui volcano, known more widely as Haleakala. Lava flows and cinder cones as young as 200-500 years in age are found along Haleakala's southwest and east coasts. Not much older than this are lava flows and cinder cones on the floor of Haleakala Crater that were emplaced as recently as about 800 years ago. Much of the crater has been mantled by lava flows in the past 5,000 years. All these volcanic products are stark reminders that East Maui's volcano has erupted frequently in the recent past and likely will erupt again. A geologic mapping effort begun in 1997 has yielded the most detailed and accurate picture of Haleakala's volcanic history to date. This work will culminate in a new geologic map and revised hazard assessment of Haleakala, adding much detail to the out-of-print map covering the entire volcano and compiled in the 1940s by Harold Stearns and Gordon Macdonald.

    Extractions: Much of the present research on Hawaiian volcanoes is directed toward understanding how they work. Through interdisciplinary study of their geologic histories and structure, the geochemistry of their gases and erupted lavas, their historical eruptions, and their seismicity, HVO scientists and colleagues try to answer questions about the physical and chemical dynamics of magma formation, accumulation, ascent, storage, intrusion, eruption, structural evolution, and volcanic hazards. A large pavilion has picnic tables and a fire place (bring your own firewood - firewood is not available in the area). Kulanaokuaiki Campground, located at 2,700 foot elevation and about 5 miles down the Hilina Pali Road. There is NO WATER at this location. This new campground has 3 campsites. 2 of these sites are wheelchair accessible. There are barbecue grills, a vault-type toilet (no running water), and picnic tables.

    Extractions: Mars is only about one-half the size of Earth and yet has several volcanoes that surpass the scale of the largest terrestrial volcanoes . The most massive volcanoes are located on huge uplifts or domes in the Tharsis and Elysium regions of Mars. The Tharsis dome is 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) across and rises to 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) in height. Located on its northwest flank are three large shield volcanoes : Ascraeus Mons, Pavonis Mons and Arsia Mons. Beyond the dome's northwest edge is Olympus Mons, the largest of the Tharsis volcanoes. Olympus Mons is classified as a shield volcano. It is 24 kilometers (15 miles) high, 550 kilometers (340 miles) in diameter and is rimmed by a 6 kilometers (4 miles) high scarp . It is one of the largest volcanoes in the Solar System. By comparison the largest volcano on Earth is Mauna Loa which is 9 kilometers (6 miles) high and 120 kilometers (75 miles) across.
