Extractions: Students at Country Day School of Arlington continue making the transition into middle school at this grade level. Beginning in sixth grade, students are assigned faculty advisors, have a fully departmentalized academic schedule, and have the opportunity to take advanced courses in math and Spanish. The homeroom teacher for sixth grade is responsible for keeping track of attendance, collecting homework for all subjects, and distributing informational materials from the school. Students report to their homeroom first thing every morning, and return to that room at the end of each day before dismissal. Four of the five academic courses (math, English, history, and science) are placed in an A/B morning schedule. The length of each course is one hour and 25 minutes, and it occurs every two days. Each middle school student, then, has two academic courses before lunch every day. This schedule enables students to have lengthy focused classes with homework in each without overloading students with homework. French and Spanish classes are 45 minutes each day right after lunch. Students also have a 45-minute study hall every day after lunch during which they prepare their homework. The main goal of the faculty advising system is to monitor closely the academic progress of every student. The faculty member serves as guide, mentor, friend, and advocate to groups of four or five students. The advisees meet as a group with their advisor over lunch once a week and also individually at least once a week, and the advisors meet weekly to discuss students. The advisor has the students schedules and is kept updated with progress in all classes, including sports and electives. While the teachers of those courses best answer questions about particular classes, general information about how your middle school student is doing would come from the faculty advisor.

Extractions: Vocabulary Tables Vocabulary tables can be very useful in helping intermediate to advanced students increase their vocabulary based on different forms of a particular word that is known to them. This activity can be strengthened by having students base their vocabulary tables on specific topics. By basing tables on specific topics, students also improve their "long term" memory of related words. In this lesson, you will find an example vocabulary table based on words related to making music, specifically classical music, as well as a lesson outline. Aim: Expanding vocabulary in specific contexts Activity: Table creation providing verb, noun, adjective and adverb
Extractions: Advertising - English for Special Purposes Core Vocabulary The use of this lexical approach is essential for successful language acquisition in English for Specific Purposes. However, teachers are often not equipped with the exact English terminology required in very specific trade sectors. For this reason, core vocabulary sheets go a long way in helping teachers provide adequate materials for students with English for Special Purposes needs. These core vocabulary reference sheets provide between 150 and 240 key words and phrases for each industry. Each series is divided into three pages that, when combined, form an alphabetical list. In taking this lexical approach to attaining key vocabulary, students should be encouraged to translate the specific words and phrases into their native tongues as each phrase has a very specific translation in each language. advertisement - ad market coverage advertiser mass advertising advertising - publicity mass communication advertising agency mass media - media advertising agent media buyer advertising budget media buying
Extractions: Guide Picks - Top French Grammar Books There are hundreds, maybe thousands of French grammar books available, each claiming to be the "best," the "most concise," the "most complete," etc. Obviously they can't all be the best, and in fact one of them must, by definition, be the worst. How do you know which is which? Well, that's where I come in - I have more than a dozen French grammar books, many of which I use regularly, and others which I might as well throw away. Here are my favorite grammar books: the ones that I use every day as well as those I've grown beyond, but keep because they once helped me so much. (The parentheses indicate the working language(s) of each book.) Le Bon Usage Originally published in 1936, this is the bible of French grammar - the most thorough French grammar book that exists. It has been republished more than a dozen times and is a must for fluent speakers. This is the book that native speakers refer to when they want to understand or explain some aspect of French grammar. (French)
