Vitiligo is the patchy loss of skin pigmentation due to an auto-immune attack by the body's own immune system on skin melanocytes . It frequently begins in late adulthood with patches of unpigmented skin appearing on extremities. The patches may grow, or remain constant in size. Occasional small areas may repigment, as they are recolonised by melanocytes. Steroids have been used in treatment, but are not very effective. The condition appears medically harmless, other than the problem that the affected skin areas have no protection against sunlight - they burn but never tan. However, if the skin is naturally dark, the visual effect of the white patches can be quite disfiguring. (If the affected person is of pale-skinned ancestry, the patches can be at least be rendered invisible by the expedient of avoiding sunlight and the tanning of unaffected skin) It has been claimed that the singer Michael Jackson has his skin bleached to mask the effects of vitiligo.

Extractions: Vitiligo Vitiligo is an autoimmune skin disease in which the absence of melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) causes a decreased pigmentation in the skin. Vitiligo is 10 to 15 times more common in patients with other autoimmune diseases, such as Addison's disease, diabetes mellitus, pernicious anemia, discoid lupus, and abnormal thyroid function. This disorder has only recently been identified as an autoimmune disease because organ-specific antibodies have now been detected in patients with vitiligo. The autoimmune reaction leads to destruction of pigment cells (melanocytes). Pigment cells are what give color or tint to the skin. Vitiligo has a tendency to run in families and may follow unusual trauma, especially to the head. The disease may also be referred to as leukoderma. Autoimmune diseases occur when these reactions inexplicably take place against the body's own cells and tissue by producing self-reactive antibodies. Dit ontstaat door het verdwijnen van de pigmentcellen in de huid. Vitiligo kan voor de patient een belangrijk en belastend probleem zijn dat in sommige gevallen ook consequenties kan hebben voor het zelfbeeld en zelfvertrouwen van de patient. Ongeveer 1 procent van de wereldbevolking lijdt aan vitiligo! Bovendien blijkt vitiligo vaak een 'familiaire' aandoening: meerdere mensen binnen een familie lijden aan de ziekte. Ook eeneiige tweelingen blijken vaak op gelijke wijze gevoelig voor het ontwikkelen van de witte vitiligoplekken. Sommige factoren kunnen vitiligo uitlokken. Dit geldt overigens alleen bij personen die reeds een aanleg hebben tot het ontwikkelen van vitiligo. Bekende factoren zijn o.a. ernstige ziekten, operaties, zwangerschap, bevalling, zonnebrand en huidschade door verwondingen. Ook emotionele stress zou vitiligo kunnen uitlokken of verergeren.
