Extractions: (pdf 151kb) Press Releases Video Clips History Shortly after the end of World War II, the United States military established schools for the children of its service men and women stationed in Europe and the Pacific. Schools for children of military members stationed at various bases in the United States were already well-established. First administered by the military branches they served, the growing number of schools was soon transferred to civilian managers, then organized into two separate but parallel systems: the Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) overseas, and the Department of Defense Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) in the United States. In 1994 the two systems were brought together under an umbrella agency, the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA). Organization The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) is a civilian agency of the U.S. Department of Defense. It is headed by a director who oversees all agency functions from DoDEA headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. DoDEA's schools are divided into three areas, each of which is managed by an area director. Within each of these three areas, schools are organized into districts headed by superintendents.

Extractions: Asked Questions Main Page The Marine Military Academy is the only private school in the world based on the traditions, values and ideals of the United States Marine Corps. Although academics are the backbone of any educational organization, leadership is the muscle here at MMA. Cadets learn through a structured, traditional military school environment self-discipline, teamwork, motivation, how to follow, and how to lead. Also, the establishment of a separate and distinct School of Leadership Studies is unique among all other secondary, military boarding schools in the country. The cost for a new student for the 2003-2004 academic years is $20,900. That figure includes tuition, room, board, uniforms, laundry, linens, and cleaning fees. In addition, there is a $100 non-refundable application fee and a one-time $750 reservation deposit due upon acceptance. However, Tuition must be re-evaluated each academic year in an effort to maintain the high standards we demand for the cadets with constant vigilance to provide an affordable quality education. For accurate tuition financial information, please contact the Admissions Office. Are there payment plan options?

Extractions: [ Previous: Becoming Equal Exhibition contents World War II set in motions forces that, extended by the fifty year Cold War, transformed Virginia. In 1945, however, much of Old Virginia remained. Cartoonist Fred Seibel's personification of Virginia was "the colonel," a presumed Confederate veteran, dressed in a white suit, and with a white goatee, who to modern eyes seems to be Colonel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken. The fact that the commonwealth usually was referred to as Old Virginia or the Old Dominion hinted at the continued supremacy of traditional values and beliefs. Among these were a code of honorable conduct the Virginia gentleman a tradition of gracious hospitality, a Jeffersonian political culture that favored decentralized power, as well as less pleasant features such as America's own apartheid system in which status was fixed and immutable and everyone knew his place. Romantic View of Virginia The public image of Virginia in 1945 was little different than it had been fifty years earlier. In the 1880s and 1890s Thomas Nelson Page had glorified the pre-Civil War South, especially Virginia, in a series of popular novels. More than anyone else of his generation, he was responsible for creating the stereotype of a golden age of harmonious plantation life and honorable living unstained by material concerns. At the same time, author Ellen Glasgow began a career that looked "beneath social customs, beneath the poetry of the past, and the romantic nostalgia of the present." She wrote
Extractions: Natural Bridge Natural Bridge has been in private ownership since King George III granted it to Thomas Jefferson on July 5, 1774. We all know how Jefferson repaid the favor almost two years later to the day. Natural Bridge and the surrounding area is a well developed tourist attraction. The complex includes the hotel where we stayed, caverns, gift shop and a wax museum. Many people may feel unique natural places like this should belong to the public. I don't disagree with this sentiment. However, I give this company credit for the tasteful manner in which they developed the area. It's not your typical tacky roadside tourist trap. Natural Bridge is enormous. The picture above does not do it justice. At over 200 feet high, the size of the thing rivals many of the stone arches we saw in Utah.

Extractions: During those sixteen years, work to change the corps and improve its image was successful, the Alumni Association and the college initiated the first Virginia Tech Day for high school students, and the Alumni Loyalty Fundlater called the Alumni Fundwas established. Under Burruss Tech also established extension schools offering the first two years of engineering; allowed a group of students to rent a house and live off campus; launched a successful intramural athletic program; received federal funds to conduct research in rural electrification; and turned much of student personnel services over to the efficient YMCA on campus, which was led by Paul Derring. Hampden-Sydney College conferred an LL.D. degree on Burruss in 1938, and in 1939 the National Association of Land Grant Colleges elected him as its president. In 1943 and 1944 VPI discontinued football. In February 1943 all juniors and seniors were called into the armed services. The same month, VPI was selected for the Army Specialized Training Program. Other war training programs followed. At the peak of the programs, the campus held more than 2,000 soldiers (forty-six of them obtained engineering degrees). During the war, three former Tech students received the Congressional Medal of Honor. Although it was kept secret during the war, faculty and alumni cooperated in research that led to the development of the atomic bomb.
