Extractions: The African Diaspora Research Project (ADRP) conducts international comparative studies of African descent communities and trains social scientists in the field of diaspora studies. This project is committed to research, policy analysis, and dissemination of knowledge about the ongoing activities of African descendants throughout the world. The ADRP contributes to a broader understanding of "peopleness," intergroup relations and social change. The Project Director is Dr. Ruth Simms Hamilton (517) 353-9505, ADRP Office or (517) 353-6790, Sociology. Agricultural Biotechnology for Sustainable Productivity This AID-funded project involves management of a comprehensive biotechnology program whose principal objective is the deployment of genetically improved crop varieties into developing countries. Primary focus is on insect and virus resistance using genetic engineering. Project director is Assistant Professor Catherine L. Ives (517) 432-1641, Institute of International Agriculture.
Extractions: Gifts for humane research and animal studies support the breakthroughs that improve the health of all animals. These contributions also help veterinary medicine control diseases and benefit the long-term welfare of animals. Feline leukemia vaccine and canine dialysis, for example, were developed at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine with the support of private individuals.

Summer NIH Research Fellowships For Veterinary Students experiences, answer questions, and discuss research career opportunities Faculty ofthe Department of Comparative medicine have a veterinary research symposium. http://www.med.stanford.edu/school/compmed/ar/Courses/summerFellowship.htm
Extractions: Stipend: $1500/month The program consists of an individual research project, workshops on research-related topics, sessions on research career development for veterinarians, and a veterinary research symposium. The research project is the most important part of the Program. The goals of the research project are to have students address a significant experimental question, work independently and with other researchers, and produce and publish results. Students will be matched with a preceptor (see list of faculty below) according to research interests. The research interests of most of the participating faculty fall in the fields of neuroscience and infectious diseases. The preceptor will have outlined a focused project for the student to perform in the preceptors laboratory. Students will become completely involved in their assigned laboratory participating in laboratory meetings and social events, attending seminars with other members of their laboratory, and working on their research project at least 40 hours/week. Extractions: 106 acres located on the western portion of the Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine campus at Westborough Road (Route 30). The site abuts an MBTA commuter rail station, state-owned land and CenTech Park. The site is 3.5 miles east of the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) Exit 11 (Millbury) via Routes 122 and 30, and 6.0 miles west of I-495 via Routes 9 and 30. Owner Research and development, pilot manufacturing and other activities related to the biotechnology, medical and pharmaceutical industries, as well as the physical, environmental and other sciences. Accessory uses such as food, administrative and conference facilities are also permitted. Floor: Area Ratio .35 SF of building to 1 SF of land Site Program Campus master plan, which includes site, shows up to 702,000 SF of three-story buildings. The master plan permits flexibility in actual building and building site areas. One subdivision-level road is planned to connect Phase I (348,000 SF) to Route 30 and Tufts' campus roadway system. Another subdivision road will connect Phase II (354,000 SF) to the Phase I road network.

Extractions: Departments Clinical Studies Philadelphia Medical Genetics / Research Established in 1970, the Section of Medical Genetics has taken on a leadership role in veterinary and comparative genetic research involving companion animals. The following major research programs have been developed: Identification and Characterization of Hereditary Diseases in Animals The NIH-supported National Referral Center - Animal Models of Human Genetic Disease forms the core of the hereditary disease studies by the Section and is the only one in the nation. Through the genetics/pediatrics clinics and referrals from other institutions, over 50 hereditary diseases have been identified and characterized in dogs and cats. These clinical to molecular genetic studies contributed to the better understanding of the pathophysiology of these diseases as well as the accurate diagnosis. Based upon this research the Josephine Deubler Genetic Disease Testing Laboratory utilizes a variety of DNA, biochemical, and hematologic tests to identify affected and carrier animals of known recessively inherited diseases in dogs an cats. Other species studied include primates, emus, mice, and food animals. Many of these studies are accomplished through collaborations with other investigators within the School's other departments at the University of Pennsylvania as well as other institutions.

The Faculty started with a six year degree program in veterinary medicine. But in 1989 another school, the Institute for Animal Health Assistants, which was a diploma granting school run by the Commission for Higher Education, came under its jurisdiction. Since then FVM runs two educational programs: a six year doctorate degree in Veterinary Medicine (DVM), and a two year diploma for animal health assistants. The FVM currently has seven academic departments that specialize in various veterinary aspects.

Extractions: U The balance of federal funding for the campus comes from the National Science Foundation ($34.3 million), the U.S. Department of Agriculture ($20.2 million), the Department of Energy ($18.2 million), the Department of Defense ($9.1 million) and other federal agencies. The balance of the research support came from private foundations ($17 million), other institutions of higher education ($12.7 million), charitable organizations ($10 million), agricultural marketing boards ($6.9 million) and other types of institutions. "Its gratifying to see the campuss research dollars increasing," says UC Davis Vice Chancellor for Research Barry Klein. "But even more important are the growing reputations of campus researchers who are responsible for the large increase in our funding. Weve nurtured and attracted increasing numbers of internationally known investigators here and theyre contributing enormously to the campuss mounting prestige in research."
