SBHCs are designed to overcome barriers that inhibit young people from getting needed health care, including lack of confidentiality or fear that confidentiality will not be maintained, transportation problems, fear that parents will be notified by insurer, inconvenient appointment times, costs, and apprehension about discussing personal health problems. Expanding Numbers of SBHCs Meet the Health Care Needs of Young People.

Extractions: With a PhD in mass communication from Syracuse University (1971), and experience in teaching film and television production in the Communication Department at UVM (1970-1981) while working on research projects at the College of Medicine, Dr. Worden became a full time researcher in the Office of Health Promotion Research (1981-present) and a member of the VCC. He has served as principal investigator on several research grants in smoking prevention and cessation, and in breast screening promotion and mammography surveillance, as well as on several national and local scientific panels. His awards include the C. Everett Koop National Health Award in 1996 for work in mass media prevention of adolescent cigarette smoking. The major areas of research pursued by Dr. Worden are in developing and evaluating interventions to prevent youth from starting to smoke cigarettes, or to help them quit smoking. He and his colleagues at the Office of Health Promotion Research have employed social learning theory in the design of the mass media and community programs smoking reduction, and in the evaluation of these programs. Dr. Worden has employed similar theoretical models in developing programs to promote mammography screening and surveillance, and in evaluating the impact of these programs. Other behavioral models have been applied in examining public perceptions of genetic screening. By using these behavioral approaches, Dr. Worden is contributing significantly to cancer control through interventions that reach out to the general public.

Extractions: The Los Angeles Unified School District wants to build more schools in the Wilshire Center area. It is the kind of news that can make any resident nervous, especially after the Belmont Learning Center controversy and recent school shutdowns because of asbestos-contaminated classrooms. But this time around, Los Angeles Board of Education member Caprice Young promised, things will be different. At the Radisson Wilshire Plaza Hotel last Wednesday, Young presented an ambitious plan to build six public schools between Western and Vermont avenues and Beverly and Wilshire boulevards. The project, however, is part of a pilot program called "New Schools and Better Neighborhoods," where stakeholders in the Wilshire Center community are invited to take part in the planning process of new school construction. Because of bad experiences with other construction projects, Young said, "the new school board said we have to do it differently on the front end." Since March, New Schools and Better Neighborhoods has held a dozen meetings to find a "better way to establish better schools," said NSBN member George Richter at the luncheon. Richter, who is also president of the Beverly-Kingsley Neighborhood Association, explained that Wilshire Center schools are facing an overcrowding crisis, where 4,000 school-age children will soon enter the public school system and "we have no place to put them." As a result, NSBN - the first private-public project of its kind in Los Angeles - was formed with funding from the Irving Foundation and LAUSD to look at the problem.
