Product Description

Before widescale emigration in the early 1960s, North Africa's Jewish communities were among the largest in the world.Without Jewish emigrants from North Africa, Israel's dynamic growth would simply not have occured.North African Jews, also called Maghribi, strengthed the new Israeli state through their settlements, often becoming the victims of Arab-Israeli conflicts and terrorist attacks.Their contribution and struggles are, in many ways, akin to the challenges emigrants from the former Soviet Union are currently encountering in Israel. Today, these North African Jewish communities are a vital force in Israeli society and politics as well as in France and Quebec.

In the first major political history of North African Jewry, Michael Laskier paints a compelling picture of three Third World Jewish communities, tracing their exposure to modernization and their relations with the Muslims and the European settlers.Perhaps the most extraordinary feature of this volume is its astonishing array of primary sources.Laskier draws on a wide range of archives in Israel, Europe, and the United States and on personal interviews with former community leaders, Maghribi Zionists, and Jewish outsiders who lived and worked among North Africa's Jews to recreate the experiences and development of these communities.Among the subjects covered:
--Jewish conditions before and during colonial penetration by the French and Spanish;
--anti-Semitism in North Africa, as promoted both by European settlers and Maghribi nationalists;
--the precarious position of Jews amidst the struggle between colonized Muslims and European colonialists;
--the impact of pogroms in the 1930s and 1940s and the Vichy/Nazi menace;
--internal Jewish communal struggles due to the conflict between the proponents of integration, and of emigration to other lands, and, later, the communal self-liquidiation process;—the role of clandestine organizations, such as the Mossad, in organizing for self-defense and illegal immigration;—and, more generally, the history of the North African `aliyaand Zionist activity from the beginning of the twentieth century onward.

A unique and unprecedented study, Michael Laskier's work will stand as the definitive account of North African Jewry for some time.

Editorial Review

Product Description
The author traces the history of the fertile lower Medjerda Valley in rural Tunisia since colonial times, with a focus on national agricultural development policies. Arguing that development programs have seldom taken into account the political and economic realities of the rural population, Dr. Zussman provides a framework for understanding the "fellahin's" opposition, refuting the label of "peasant mentality" that has been placed on them. ... Product Description
How did Tunisia succeed in eliminating the threat of militant Islamic fundamentalism? While its next door neighbor, Algeria, is in the midst of an upheaval threatening modernization and a secular government, Tunisia is the only Muslim country to ban polygamy and to introduce state-funded contraception. Borowiec shows why Tunisia may succeed in its aspirations to make the transition to a "young developed nation" at the beginning of the next millennium. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is about the men of the 79th Fighter Group on the "forgotten" Mediterranean front in World War II. It tells who they were, what they did, and because it is set in the broader context of the entire conflict in that theater is shows how the war on the ground influenced their war in the air. The 79th spent much of its tour with the RAF's Desert Air Force in Tunisia, Sicily, and the "other side" of Italy - providing readers with an inside look at battles generally not well known to the American public - and also took part in the battle for Rome and the invasion of southern France. It racked up an enviable record. It destroyed hundreds of ground targets, led all Allied fighters in victories over both Pantelleria and Anzio, gave three destroyers the "deep six," and was the only fighter group to sink an aircraft carrier. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The History of the 79th FG in Action!
THE 79TH FIGHTER GROUP OVER TUNISIA, SICILY AND ITALY IN WORLD WAR II is an exceptionally well-done history of this hard-fighting unit, which gave exemplary fighter-bomber support to Allied forces in the Med. A revised version of the author's earlier A HOSTILE SKY, THE MEDITERRANEAN AIR WAR OF THE 79TH FIGHTER GROUP, this 2001 Schiffer publication provides a much improved, more focused, up-close-and-personal account of the life and times of this unit.

Created in January 1942, the 79th FG did not enter combat until March 1943 when it began flying ground support, anti-shipping sweeps and bomber escort missions with its P-40s. Transferred to the 12th AF in August 1943, the Group coverted to Jugs in the spring/summer of '44. Although it only claimed 130-odd air kills during its lifetime, it was highly valued for the effective support it gave Allied ground forces, earning two DUCs in this respect. Those accolades came at a cost; Woerpel's list of Group KIA/MIA/POW running to three full pages!

Woerpel, whose uncle was killed flying with the Group's 87th FS, does an excellent job of chronicling the creation, early history and wartime exploits of the 79th along with the personalities that made up the Group. His polished narrative features many first-person reminiscences and combat reports that really bring the Group to life. The text is complimented by over 230 photographs, maps and twelve nicely done color profiles of 79th P-40s, P-47s and their Axis adversaries by Steve Ferguson.

Having been disappointed by A HOSTILE SKY, I was very pleased by Woerpel's re-do. In every category, THE 79TH FIGHTER GROUP is a 100% improvement. Unless something better comes along, Don Woerpel's book will stand as THE definitive history of this notable fighter unit. Highly recommended. ... Read more

Excerpt: Vichy France, Vichy regime, or Vichy government, are common terms used to describe the government of France from July 1940 to August 1944. This government succeeded the Third Republic and preceded the Provisional Government of the French Republic. The government officially called itself the French State (État Français), in contrast with the previous designation, "French Republic." Product Description
The Greek War of Independence (also known as the Greek Revolution) was a successful war of independence waged by the Greek revolutionaries between 1821 and 1829, with later assistance from several European powers, against the Ottoman Empire, who were assisted by their vassals, the Egyptian Khedivate and partly the Vilayet of Tunisia.Following the fall of the Byzantine Empire to the Ottoman Empire, most of Greece came under Turkish rule. During this time, there were numerous revolts by Greeks attempting to gain independence. In 1814, a secret organization called the Filiki Eteria was founded with the aim of liberating Greece. The Filiki Eteria planned to launch revolts in the Peloponnese, the Danubian Principalities and Constantinople. The first of these revolts began on 6 March 1821 in the Danubian Principalities, but it was soon put down by the Ottomans. The events in the north urged the Greeks in the Peloponnese in action and on 17 March 1821 the Maniots declared war on the Ottomans. ... Read more
