Excerpt: Harlingen, Texas -Harlingen's strategic location at the intersection of U.S. highways 77 and 83 in northwestern Cameron County fostered its development as a distribution, shipping, and industrial center. In 1904 Lon C. Hill envisioned the Arroyo Colorado as a commercial waterway. He named the town he founded on the north bank after the city of Harlingen, Netherlands. The town's post office was established that year. The first school opened with fifteen pupils in 1905 near the Hill home, the first residence built in Harlingen. Harlingen incorporated on April 15, 1910, when the population totaled 1,126. In 1920 the census listed 1,748. The local economy at first was almost entirely agricultural. Major crops were vegetables and cotton. World War II military installations in Harlingen caused a jump in population from 23,000 in 1950 to 41,000 by 1960. Harlingen Army Air Field preceded Harlingen Air Force Base, which closed in 1962. The city's population fell to 33,603 by 1972, then climbed to 40,824 by 1980. Local enterprise, focused on the purchase and utilization of the abandoned base and related housing, laid the groundwork for continuing progress through a diversified economy. The estimated population in July 1985 was 49,000, of which about 80 percent was Hispanic. In the late 1980s income from tourism ranked second only to citrus fruit production, with grain and cotton next in order. The addition ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=51652 ... Read more

Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Marine Military Academy, a private college preparatory academy located in Harlingen, Texas, offers a college preparatory curriculum for boys in grades 8-12 plus one-year of post-graduate study. The school was founded in 1965. Its traditions and ideals are inspired by the United States Marine Corps. The Marine Military Academy is only affiliated with the United States Marine Corps through its Marine Corps Junior ROTC program. The school also offers summer programs including a four-week adventure summer camp for boys 13-17, as well as ESL classes for foreign students. The academy is situated on the site of the former Harlingen Army Air Field, established in 1941. After closing, the field was re-opened in 1952 as the Harlingen Air Force Base which closed in the early 1960s. Since opening its doors as the Marine Military Academy most of the original buildings have been replaced with modern facilities. The adjacent runways became the Valley International Airport. Courses offered include regular high school classes as well as honors courses, Advanced Placement authorized courses and dual enrollment courses for which college credit may be earned. These credits can result in a cadet placing out of basic courses when entering college. Most courses are taught year-long. Cadets have required attendance at tutorials for if they are failing any classes. Product Description

This colorful biography brings to life the legendary statesmen, warrior, and friend of the Cherokee, Sam Houston. From running away and joining a band of Cherokees to avoiding classes at school, to leading men into battle, Houston's larger-than-life and flamboyant personality is encapsulated in this life telling. Little-known facts about Houston are fully explored and revealed-for instance, as a congressman he wore a vest made of leopard skin to remind everyone that he would not "change his spots" to do what is popular over what he felt was right. Encouraging youthful readers to stick to their guns when facing life's challenges, this accurate history and compelling story also debunks the commonly held belief that Houston's flowing, smooth signature, which seemed to appear as "I Am Houston," is how he actually signed his name. A listing of web links for teacher activity resources is also included.

Product Description

World War II, British RoWith the outbreak of yal Air Force (RAF) officials sought to train aircrews outside of England, safe from enemy attack and poor weather. In the United States the first of six schools, No. 1 British Flying Training School (BFTS), was located in Terrell, Texas, east of Dallas. The cadets trained in the air on aerobatics, instrument flight, and night flying, while on the ground they studied navigation, meteorology, engines, and armaments—even spending time in early flight simulators. Not all survived their training. By the end of the war, more than two thousand RAF cadets had trained at Terrell.

5-0 out of 5 stars An informed and informative descriptive survey
The Royal Air Force In Texas: Training British Pilots In Terrell During World War II by Tom Killebrew is the fascinating and little known story of the first of six British flight training schools which were deliberately located in America for the express purpose of instructing Royal Air Force pilots during the years of the Second World War. These schools were necessary, for they trained new recruits away from the enemy attacks and poor weather conditions back in England. Yet they were not entirely safe; anything from collisions to running out of fuel could quickly claim the lives of these trainees. The Royal Air Force In Texas is an informed and informative descriptive survey into the militarily difficult times British military aviation history and a unique addition to the growing library of World War II histories. ... Product Description
Audie Murphy was the most decorated soldier during World War II. He was awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest military award for bravery given to any individual who risks their life above and beyond the call of duty.

Audie Murphy's life was shaped by three things: the Great Depression of the 1930s, World War II of the 1940s, and a Hollywood career which began in the early 1950s and continued through the 1960s. The Depression and his family's poverty toughened him. The war was the experience that followed him all his life and brought him fame. Hollywood was never like real life to him. Of the three, war was the definitive experience of his life.

On May 28, 1971, Audie, along with several other men, were passengers on a private plane on their way to investigate a business opportunity. The plane crashed in fog and rain on the side of a mountain near Roanoke, Virginia. All aboard were killed. Audie Murphy was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.

Audie Murphy was a true American hero and his life was a rags-to-riches story. But in Audie Murphy, author Judy Alter shows that fame does not always bring happiness.

Audie Murphy is the fifth title in the Stars of Texas Series, aimed at fourth graders studying for the Texas history section of the TAKS test. The first three books in the series, Henrietta King: Rancher and Philanthropist, Mirabeau B. Lamar: Second President of Texas, and Miriam "Ma" Ferguson: First Woman Governor of Texas, have been chosen for the Accelerated Reader program, and Henrietta King was a Spur Award finalist. Free workbooks for all Stars of Texas Series books are available online. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Audie Murphy War Hero and Movie Star
I was disappointed in the book because I thought it was going to be a biography and it was not, it just highlighted his war exploits and some of his movies.

3-0 out of 5 stars Audie Murphy
Nice book to read.I was looking for more in depth/detailed information of he and Pam's life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book Gives Young Readers a True Look at a War Hero
In "Audie Murphy, War Hero and Movie Star" the most decorated soldier during World War II is illuminated. The middle chapters, which describe the military actions for which he was honored are frank and descriptive. Of particular interest is the battle scene near Holtzwhir, France, where he was personally credited with killing or wounding about fifty Germans and stopping an attack by enemy tanks. Alterincludes the legendary quote to headquarters made by Murphy during the fighting. When asked by radio how close the enemy was,he said, "Just hold the phone, and I'll let you talk to one. ..." Murphy was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for exceptional valor in this battle.

Even when dealing with Murphy's post-traumatic stress disorder, or "battle fatigue" in the lexicon of the 1940s, Alter is honest and instructive. This is a book my 11-year-old grandson will enjoy, and I have already passed it on.

Extras in the Audie Murphy book include explanations of the Great Depression, what a "filling station" is, and a short excerpt from Murphy's autobiography "To Hell and Back."

The book also includes a timeline and a glossary, as well as website listings and beautifully rendered line drawings by the illustrator. Children will be so absorbed in reading this well-written biography, they won't even realize that they are being taught important American history lessons at the same time. ... Read more
