1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
I have better luck with the PocketLingo and Oxford dictionaries on my Palm than with the Chambers. Not worth the bucks.

4-0 out of 5 stars IN-DEPTH; AFFORDABLE
The high standards of 'Chambers' is well-pronounced in this "Chambers Dictionary of Science and Technology". It is a know-all single-volume asset. Information is ubiquitous. Every aspect of science and technology received adequate attention. They are comprehensive and up-to-date: just be ready to go the distance.
One outstanding side-attraction here, is how the author mapped out in chronological order, all the important discoveries which made science the delight that it is today. In the same vein, several technological inventions were elaborated.
This is by every means, a high-quality lexicon. The only blame I hold against it is that it is not as definition-rich as the "McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Science and Technical Terms". But, I must mention that its listed price is only one-third of McGraw-Hill's. It is also more adherent to SI units than the McGraw-Hill's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chambers Dictionary of Science and Technology
A must book for any undergraduate or upper level Biology or Chemistry major.Having problems finding definitions in your textbooks? Are you resorting to Websters like I was, with minimal or no results, followed by a fruitless search over the internet?Your search is over.My daughter put this under my Christmas tree well before Christmas and I had a paper to write.I opened it early knowing that the answer to my problems was wrappedneatly under my own tree. She's ticked off, but she'll get over it and I'm breathing a sigh of relief.I have a virtual library of Biology, Botany, and Chemistry books and still have trouble finding some of the key definitions. It makes you want to "bop" those authors. This book was 4 for 4 right off the bat.I only wish I had this book much earlier in my studies. It would have saved me a lot of time and effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value - Highly Useful
As a patent attorney, I am constantly faced with new technologies and a duty to utilize accurate terminology.I just bought my second copy of this book today so I would have one at work and one at home.I also purchased a copy for a friend's son who is in high school.

Get this book and make it a rule to look up terms that are new - you will be surprised how satisfying it is not to be intimidated by techno-speak.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new standard for science reference material
There are many science dictionaries on the market and most cater primarily to one or two scientific disciplines. This work not only includes all areas of science, but also technology related terms and mathematical concepts. For many of the entries illustrations are provided. However, the prime strength of this book are the additional 300-500 word breakout sections for key terms and concepts. All entries are clear and where possible written in non-scientific language. This makes this work an excellent reference for anyone with an interest in science. A s a science writer, I have found this book to be an invaluable reference. ... Read more

Product Description
Information Technology is a rapidly developing field in an international and multilingual environment with its own new and quickly evolving terminology. This dictionary fills the need for a multilingual reference work to simplify the exchange of knowledge between organizations and research groups of different nationalities, and to provide a basis for beginners in fields of Information Technology.

The dictionary contains over 4,500 English terms from several fields of Information Technology (Computer Science and related fields). Each term is listed with a definition, synonymous terms, its translations into French and German, and with cross references to other terms in the dictionary. Different meanings of a term are distinguished where necessary.

The dictionary aims at a wide audience, ranging from technical translators who need to find translations for recent terms only used and, more importantly, defined in scientific articles, to computer scientists with some proficiency in a foreign language who need translations for technical terms. Students who need to understand international information technology literature will also find this dictionary invaluable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, I can make sense of my telecom guys!
I do technical work in a large call center, and not a week goes by that I don't find myself reaching for this manual to figure out what the phone guys are saying.

It also makes strangely entertaining reading, a la Eric Raymond's New Hacker's Dictionary...the editor does a good job of adding context where needed, and is entertaining while doing it.Thus, I find myself reaching out to find out what a "resporg" is, and getting carried away in all this other cool stuff.

Highly recommended not only for people who work with telecom folks, but for general techie types - - network, computer, or jack-of-all-trades.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best telecom dictionary around
Having worked in telecommunications for over 20 years, and having seen many different telecom textbooks and dictionaries, I can say that hands down, Newton's Telecom Dictionary is the best telecom dictionary around. The author does an excellent job of explaining both the technical side and the business side of telecom, and he does an excellent job of keeping the dictionary up-to-date. Each year 500 to 1,000 new definitions are added to the dictionary, and existing definitions are tweaked to keep them current or to improve them in some other way. I like this ongoing commitment. Another interesting thing about this dictionary is that it shows the role and impact of telecom and networking in specific industries, government, the military, human history, and society. And, as an extra little treat, the author sprinkles humorous entries here and there in the dictionary, which make for nice entertainment when one comes across them. Oh yes, the price is excellent, too. In spite of the book's necessarily steadily increasing page count (the book now contains nearly 25,000 definitions), the author has managed to keep the price the same or about the same, year after year after year, which tells me that the author is conscientious about keeping the book affordable. For telecom old-timers and newbies alike, this is the dictionary to get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Newton's Telecom Dictionary
I bought this book for my son who works in the Telecom business. He was very happy to get it and has told me almost every week how much he has used it. He carries it in his work truck and has even had other employees ask to use it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Newton's Telecom
As a telecom professional with 30 years of experience, this book is always at my desk. There are just too many acronyms and terms to keep them all in your head.Harry Newton also provides great tips, history and insight which would span many other reference books in his concide disctionary.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Little Out of Date and Hard to Read. Better Choices are Available.
CONS

1. It is out of date. I purchased the 25th edition, copyrighted 2009, and some of the entries apparently haven't updated since the mid-1990s. HTML 4 (published in December, 1997) is not covered, although HTML 3.2 is. Other entries, such as "DOCSIS 2.0" read as if they're out of date: "CableLabs plans to complete the 2.0 version of the specification this year, and intends to accept DOCSIS 2.0 devices for certification and qualification in 2002."

2. It contains un-necessary entries added apprently to fill up space. For example, there is an entry titled "How are you today?" There is another titled, "no worries" (Australian for "no problem.") These fake entries are not funny, but rather awkward and contrived. Especially notable is the very long review of the movie "Deep Throat" in the chronology in the front of the book.

3. It has few illustrations. Constrast this with "Webster's New World Telecom Dictionary" (Wiley, 2007), which contains diagrams of most PDUs. That work is "only" 591 pages, yet covers many subjects this book doesn't.

4. It is sometimes hard to read. The author chose to start off many entries like this: "Imagine the Internet. Everyone and his uncle uses it." I expected more focused writing for a dictionary.

PROS

It is very comprehensive. It goes beyond defining terms and provides encyclopedic material on most subjects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard to work without it
The telecom industry is endlessly creative in dreaming up new names and initials for its technologies. That's why Newton's is an annual and why it's the only book (I have an ((almost)) paperless office) that sits on my desk.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Telecom Must Have
This is a must have book for any tech in the telecom industry. It is my go to book for interpreting network lingo. The author adds humor along with the explanations, which makes for interesting reading.I use it everyday!I have priced it elsewhere, and Amazon has it for half the price. Highly recommend!

4-0 out of 5 stars a great desk reference
regardless if you work in the telecom industry or you just work with any form of technology, this is a great reference book to keep on your desk, in your bag, or in your car/truck. there are a few terms i have found missing from the book, but that is most defiantly rare, almost any telecom term you can think of will be in here.

well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic
Speaking from over 20 years of experience working at LECs and domestic and international LD carriers, and having used various telecom and networking dictionaries over the years, I can say with certainty that Newton's Telecom Dictionary is the best -- by a mile.

Each year 500 to 1,000 new definitions are added to Newton's, and existing definitions are updated, improved, or enhanced in other ways. No other telecom dictionary on the market has even half as many definitions as Newton's. In fact, if you combine the definitions from all the other telecom dictionaries and weed out duplicates, their combined total probably still will be less than half of what's in Newton's.Harry Newton clearly loves telecom, as shown by the copiousness of the dictionary, the continuous additions to it, and the continuous refinements of it.

Our company currently has around 30 copies of the 25th edition and 300 copies of earlier editions. Newton's is used in the following departments: network engineering, network planning, circuit layout, security, legal and regulatory, enterprise sales, small and medium business sales, consumer sales, wholesale markets, sales engineering, managed network services, strategy and business development, marketing, customer service, billing operations, operator services, IT, education and training, corporate communications, outside plant, station I&M, wireless ops, and PMO; it's also used by our company's senior executives.

Newton's Telecom Dictionary is widely used in industry, government, the U.S. military, and academia. It is frequently cited by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and in documents submitted to the FCC by petitioners. Newton's Telecom Dictionary is also cited in print by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), U.S. District Courts, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), the U.S. Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS), the U.S. National Communications System (NCS), the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC), the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the Small Business Administration (SBA), public utilities commissions (PUCs), public service commissions (PSCs), state and municipal government in the U.S. and abroad, and overseas PTTs (Post, Telephone, and Telegraph organizations).

It is also cited by over 100 textbooks, handbooks, and other technical reference books.

I've seen Newton's at telcos, cellular phone companies, long-distance carriers, broadband service providers, MVNOs, electrical engineering firms, defense contractors, systems integration companies, software services companies, commercial and public radio stations, a TV station, an Army satellite communications station, law firms, an ad agency, the IT department of a health services organization, the IT department of a realty company, the offices of a technology magazine publisher, universities, high schools, and state government offices.

Users of earlier editions of Newton's will be very pleased with this 25th anniversary edition. It has more terms than ever -- probably closer to 26,000 by my reckoning (based on a 10-page random sample) than the 24,950 indicated on the book's cover -- and a much more visually appealing and readable typography than was used in earlier editions. There are some new tables in the dictionary, expansions and updates of earlier definitions, and additional timeline dates.

Another interesting change is that the 25th edition uses a much thinner paper than earlier editions. It's the kind of paper that you see in books published in parts of the Far East, for example, in China and Taiwan. There are two practical benefits of this. First, even though the dictionary has grown by over 200 pages from its previous edition -- there are now 1,274 pages in the dictionary, not 1,250 pages as incorrectly stated in various booksellers' descriptions of it -- the dictionary is actually much lighter and thinner than previous editions. You can now easily carry it around with you. Second, because of the thin paper, it makes the book more flexible. You can open it to any page, let go of the page, and the book will stay open on that page.

This dictionary belongs in every department in every telco, cellco, cableco, pubco, satco, IXC, VoIP provider, AOS provider, systems integrator, managed services provider, equipment manufacturer, data center, and carrier hotel. Anyone outside of these industries who is involved in some way with telecom or networking, or who is studying it in school, or who writes about it for a living, will also find the 25th edition an indispensible resource.

Product Description
There are certain kinds of information which can be conveyed more readily and clearly by pictures than by definitions and explanations alone: an illustration will help the reader to visualize the object denoted by the word and to form an impression of the way in which the objects function in their own technical field or in everyday life.

Each double-page of the dictionary contains a list of the vocabulary of a subject together with the picture illustrating this vocabulary. This arrangement, and the presence of an alphabetical index, allows the book to be used in two ways: either as a key to the vocabulary of a subject, or as an alphabetical dictionary in which the reader is referred to the section, or sections, in which the word is illustrated. This second edition has been revised and updated to reflect the most up-to-date changes in technology, science and medicine, industry, and commerce and to offer even wider coverage of all major fields of reference, including the arts and entertainment, recreation and sport, flora and fauna and typical situations in domestic and everyday life. Over 1500 new items of vocabulary have been added relating to such diverse fields as photography, typesetting, personal computers, telecommunications and transport. The objects are organized thematically enabling the user to grasp the entire vocabulary relevant to a given situation or context. ... Product Description
The Cambridge Dictionary of Space Technology is a comprehensive source of reference on the most important aspects of this fast-developing field, from basic concepts to advanced applications. With some 2,300 entries--700 more than the first edition, it lists fundamental terms that will remain in common usage for the foreseeable future and includes a selection of historical and highly specific entries to add context and depth. The Dictionary features entries on all the major areas relating to space technology, making this a reference of wide-ranging scope. While the emphasis is on defining the meaning of a word or phrase as it is used in the professional space community, each entry also contributes to a deeper understanding of the overall subject, both for the practicing specialist and interested layman. To assist the reader in research on a given topic, related entries are highlighted in the text and other important entries are cross-referenced. An additional key feature is a classified list of entries grouped under 13 subject headings. The Cambridge Dictionary of Space Technology will be indispensable to anyone with an interest in space activity. Mark Williamson is an independent space technology consultant working in the space industry and space insurance communities. A seasoned physicist and engineer, he has over 20 years of experience in satellite communications engineering, technical management, and space consultancy.
