5-0 out of 5 stars Tanzania "surprise"
From the cover and title, I expected some full color pictures of Tanzania with some identifying text. Perhaps I didn't do my part to investigate the inside of the book more before purchasing.

Actually, the book covers alot of the history of the country, politics, culture, geography, and does it all simply and understandably with some black and white photos. I would certainly buy the book again because of its informative content, it just wasn't what I expected to arrive. If you are looking for more of a pictorial, this is not it. If you are looking to learn something, buy it, buy it. ... Read more

Product Description

Tanga Region, Tanzania, is an area of persistent rural poverty with a long history of drought, floods, food shortages, famine, and social and economic disruption. Though farmers have been cultivating the land there for hundreds of years, they have consistently been unable to supply adequate food for the region's inhabitants. In Challenging Nature, Philip Porter examines eighteen farming communities to understand what the farmers there know about their environment and which historical and economic factors play into the lack of food security.

Porter first began work on this project in 1972, asking 250 farmers in the region about life history, environmental and agricultural changes, types of crops grown and methods of planting, environmental assessments, agricultural practices, food and water supplies, training and education, and attitudes toward nature. Twenty years later, he returned and reinterviewed as many farmers as could be found from the first survey. The result contextualizes the environmental history of the region while informing current and future agricultural development.

Product Description
This is a Ph.D. dissertation. Why do farmers intensify their agricultural practices? The Iraqw'ar Da/aw area in the Mbulu Highlands of northern Tanzania has long been known for its intensive cultivation, and referred to as an "island" within a matrix of less intensive land use.

The conventional explanation for its characteristics has been high population densities resulting from the prevention of expansion by hostility from surrounding pastoral groups, leading to a siege-like situation.

Drawing on an intensive program of interviews, detailed field mapping and studies of aerial photographs, early traveler's accounts and landscape photographs, this study challenges that explanation. The study concludes that the process of agricultural intensification has largely been its own driving force, based on self-reinforcing processing of change, and not a consequence of land scarcity. ... Product Description
How can the food crisis Africa drylands be challenged? Concern over sustainable livelihoods in Africa dryland areas is an issue that has received a considerable amount of attention from researchers and policy makers alike. In the face of food crisis it is common for literature to focus on issues labeled as "coping". Drylands are described in terms of what they lack, rather than in terms of the potentials they have. This study examines the potential of dryland resources in the semiarid areas of Central Tanzania. The food situation is examined from a historical perspective and special attention is focused on the role of local knowledge.

Coping strategies are analyzed by taking into account the socio-economic differences that exist among households to mobilize labor is a crucial factor in determining their respective abilities to control seasonality. The scope varies for different wealth groups to develop more pro-active livelihood strategies from immediate coping strategies. Furthermore, the different land-based strategies are assessed from economic, social and environmental perspectives. ... Read more

Description:
Soil and Water Conservation (SWC) measures are needed to control soil erosion and sustain agricultural production on steep slopes of West Usambara mountains. However, the adoption by farmers of the recommended soil and water conservation measures is low and soil erosion continues to be a problem. It could well be that the reason for the low adoption is that the costs to invest in soil and water conservation are higher than the eventual benefits. This research assessed the costs and benefits of bench terraces, grass strips and fanya juu, which are major SWC measures. Financial Cost Benefit Analysis (FCBA) was undertaken for farmers with low, moderate and high opportunity costs of labour at different slopes and soil types. The results show that labour is the major cost item in implementing SWC measures and is higher with bench terraces than with fanya juu and grass strips. The results also show that the costs of establishing the three SWC measures exceed the returns in the initial 2 years. However, in the long term, the three SWC measures are profitable to farmers with low to medium opportunity costs of labour on gentle to moderate slopes. It was also found that SWC measures are not financially attractive to most farmers with off-farm activities and other sources of income. It is concluded that high investment costs and initial negative returns are the major hindrances to the adoption of SWC measures by smallholder farmers in West Usambara mountains. Options to overcome the initial investment costs include the gradual investment in SWC measures, introduction of high value crops and small credit facilities. The promotion of dairy cattle under zero grazing system can also increase the adoption of SWC measures because of the high benefits from grasses used to stabilise SWC measures. ... Read more

Product Description

Long before the creation of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, the people of the western Serengeti had established settlements and interacted with the environment in ways that created a landscape we now misconstrue as natural. Western Serengeti peoples imagine the environment not as a pristine wilderness, but as a differentiated social landscape that embodies their history and identity. Conservationist literature has ignored these now-displaced peoples and relegated them to the margins of modern society. Their oral traditions, however, provide the means for seeing the landscape from a new perspective.

Imagining Serengeti allows us to see the Serengeti landscape as a book of memory that preserves the ways in which western Serengeti peoples have actively transformed their environment and their societies. Moreover, it strengthens the case for involving local communities in conservation efforts that will preserve African environments for the future. Using a new methodology to analyze precolonial oral traditions, Jan Shetler identifies core spatial images, which are then recontextualized into historical time periods through the use of archaeological, linguistic, ethnographic, ecological, and archival evidence. Imagining Serengeti reconstructs a socioenvironmental history of landscape memory of the western Serengeti spanning the last eighteen hundred years.
