Product Description
Control and Subversion makes a real contribution to the study of Muslim societies in general as well as being a specific and unique study of a very neglected area - post-Soviet Tajikistan - which is gaining increasing importance in the international arena of Central Asia.

Harris moves effortlessly from a macro-political perspective, examining Tajik resistance to Soviet rule, to the micro-politics of family relations, love and sex. Utilising the insights of Michel Foucault, Harris explores how order is produced in Tajik society by practices of surveillance to ensure the maintenance of particular norms. Women, she finds, are at once the most repressed and the most repressing community members.

Colette Harris' experience is very rare:she speaks both Russian and Tajik, and has set up a development project in Tajikistan. This book combines both an ethnographic and gender perspective with practical insights into a society about which little is known in the West. ... Read more

Excerpt: The Culture of Tajikistan has developed over several thousand years. Historically, Tajiks and Persians come from very similar stock with a mutual language and are related as part of the larger group of Aryan peoples. Tajik culture can be divided into two areas, Metropolitan and Kuhiston(Highland). Ancient towns such as Bukhara, Samarkand, Herat, Balkh and Nishopur Khiva are no longer part of the country. More modern centres include Dushanbe (the capital), Khudjand, Kulob, Panjikent and Istarvshan. In order to understand Tajik culture it is necessary to look back to the time of Transoxiana, (an area that lies between the Amu Darya and Sir Darya rivers and modern north-west Afghanistan), and the centres of civilization of the Nile, Mesopotamia and the banks of the Yangtze. The Tajiks' ancestors were from Scythian Indian or European tribes who were nomads of the Eurasian steppes and were among the first to settle in Central Asia about 4000 years ago. A family celebrating Eid in Tajikistan.Main article: Religion in TajikistanZoroaster, the prophet of Zoroastrianism, was born in the Balkh area, (northern Afghanistan and Transoxania) and was possibly Bactrian (the partial ancestors of the Tajiks). Zoroastrianism had been adopted by Persian emperors as a state religion and was practiced during the Samanid era in central Asia until being overrun by the Arabs. Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Soviet era saw the implementation of policies designed to transform the status of women. During the 1930s, the Soviet authorities launched a campaign for women's equality in Tajikistan, as they did elsewhere in Central Asia. Eventually major changes resulted from such programs, but initially they provoked intense public opposition. For example, women who appeared in public without the traditional all-enveloping veil were ostracized by society or even killed by relatives for supposedly shaming their families by what was considered unchaste behavior. ... From the supplier: Tajik language has had several influences although the strongest is that of a Persian variety and Uzbek Turkish. After the Bolshevik invasion and the consequent erroneous divisions into the Uzbek and Tajik republics, the Tajiks tried to create a literary language structure based on Persian. The Bolshevik's decree that made Cyrillic script the sole official alphabet and Russian the official language of the Union killed Tajikistan's linguistic efforts. With the political development of the 1990s, Perso-Arabic has been re-established and is becoming more prevalently used in literature.
