Extractions: Masters Programs - Special Education The Masters of Education (M.Ed.) Degree Program in Special Education is offered through the Department of Educational Psychology. The Masters Degree in Special Education provides students the option of meeting Texas Education Agency requirements for certification in one of three areas: Generic Special Education Specialization in Severe Emotional Disturbance and Autism, Hospital Homebound Instruction, and Special Education Counseling can be pursued on an individual basis. Students applying for specialty certificates must first satisfy the requirements for Generic Special Education. Students who wish to work toward one or more of the endorsement/certification programs may include the program's requirements in the elective or required areas of their degree plans. Nine credit hours of core elements must be completed, three from each of the following three broad disciplinary foundations. Each degree plan must include a minimum of six (6) semester hours of course work completed outside the major department. Exceptions to courses on the approved list will be considered by petition on a case by case basis by the College of Education Graduate Studies Committee.

In Texas, as in the nation generally, education systems face massive, simultaneous change on three fronts. The first is demographic, the second is technological, and the third is curricular. The school-age population of Texas is growing rapidly and its composition is changing. In 1999-2000 there were more than 3.9 million students in Texas public schools. The majority of these students were non-white.
