Twilight of the Gods: A Swedish volunteer in the 11th SS
A very interesting memoirby Erik Wallin, a Swede who volunteered his life for the cause of the Nazi SS in World War Two. Wallin's account begins duringthe latter, crucial stages of the war in 1944-45. This book will hold your attention from beginning to end.
Wallin was well suited for the regime of Hitler and the Nazi's.He continuosly expressed the racial superiority beliefs of the Nazi regime about the lesser Slavic people and other groups. He particularly despised the Kazakhs and other nationalities that he labelled as yellow brown enemies.
He also believed up to the last moment that somehow Germany would still win the war. He continued to fight on bravely despitethe brutal slaughter of his countrymen at this late stage of the conflict. There were rumours at the front that Germany would soon invent a super weapon that would turn the tide of the warin it'sfavor. He was particularly inspired when the Germans did invent the very formidible jet plane whichproved so effective against the Allied airforce.
Wallin also fought in the early stages of the War against Russia in Finland and the Eastern Front. He does not dwell on this episode in this memoir. Perhaps, someday abook or unpublished account of this era will turn upsomewhere in Sweden or elsewhere. It should also make fascinating reading.

Twilight Of The Gods
Great short read.The book was very interesting from the perspective and words of the soldier himself and not someone else writing about the soldier. The book covers what he went through as well as his thoughts and feelings about what he was doing.I enjoyed this book and would recommend it.

Glossed over most of the action
I was looking for a first person shoot book.There are some descriptions of some combat in the first person and these are very good.However, most of the battles are refered to and not really described in any detail.This book could have been excellent if this was added.

A very good memoir
There aren't very many books written by SS soldiers from World War II, and there definitely aren't many by foreign volunteers in the SS.Erik Wallin was a Swedish volunteer in the SS Nordland Division and saw extensive combat on the Eastern Front.This book doesn't cover his entire combat career, but starts with New Year's 1945 and goes through the end of the war.The combat descriptions in the book range from pretty graphic to fairly mundane, but the unbridled brutality of war comes through very clearly.Even when faced with the overwhelming colossus of the Red Army, Wallin and his fellow SS soldiers seem to maintain a fairly high morale and belief that final victory is still a possibility.This is a pretty quick read , but I certainly wish there was a bit more in some parts as some battles are described in a fair amount of detail while others get much smaller mentions.A very good addition to anyone's library if they're interested in the Eastern Front.

This guy was a veteran and had fought on the russian front since 1941 but only recounts the last year of the war.These guys were not the ss we have been told about.until recently the book had only been available in pirate copies in german and origionaly released in argentina and spain. ... new printing of provocative book on eugenics policies in Scandinavian countries
With only a new Preface, this paperback is a reissue--not a new edition--of the 1996 hardcover to raise once again fundamental social and moral issues relating to eugenics; which is invariably portrayed as a singular means for the betterment of many individuals and improvement of society by those attracted to it. The six articles by the editors and others examine various practices and aims of "the history of sterilization and genetics" particularly in Scandinavian countries in the first part of the 20th century so as to develop "an understanding of the interaction between science, ideology, and politics" mainly as a "brake on the distortion and misuse of scientific results and authority." Though the United States is only occasionally mentioned, the relevance to the genetic testing which has become a central political and religious issue in the U.S. is clear. As now, in the early 1900s, the Scandinavian countries were seen by many and held themselves out as model societies. Yet as the essays go into with much social and government data, scientific studies, and related widely-accepted ideas and values as found in contemporary writings, the eugenic practices, including sterilization, these Scandinavian societies engaged in were rooted largely in racial, ethnic, or nationalistic beliefs. In some ways, as the essays suggest and occasionally state, Nazi ideology touting the goal of racial purity and supremacy was more of an extension of widespread practices and visions regarding eugenics rather than a mutation of them. The several essays present an unsettling picture of how scientific possibility can take a turn into unseemly social programming.

3 stars = Good - solid history, but boring
In the twentieth century, both in the United States and in Europe, the idea gained ground that society was in danger from "superior" people having few children and "inferior" people having many children - or in the case of mentally retarded people, their having any children at all. Several countries passed laws to allow the sterilization of people, against their wills, for the "betterment" of society. In this book, authors Gunnar Broberg, a professor in the Department of History of Science and Ideas at the University of Lund, Sweden, and Nils Roll-Hansen, a professor at the Institute for Studies in Research and Higher Education in Oslo, Norway, record the history of Scandinavia's embracing of eugenics, and the results that this produced.

Now, where do I start with this book? I give this book 3 stars for "Good." The book is a solid history of what happened in Scandinavia, including Finland, going into excellent depth on the subject. On the downside, the book is written in a very boring and academic manner. Indeed, the authors took what should have been a fascinating topic, and produced a dull and pedestrian book.

So, if you want to an in-depth and non-sensationalistic book about how eugenics gained such a firm footing in Scandinavia, then this book is for you. But, if you want a book on this subject that will keep you fascinated and glued to your chair, then you had better look elsewhere. Overall, I give this book a rather guarded recommendation.

Flying Saabs
The Swedes have been building their own airplanes since WW2. They have a reputation of building advanced planes. Saab Aircraft Company has always been on the cutting edge of technology, willing to use the unconventional. Their jets are multi-role; interceptors, fight-bombers & reconnaissance all with ability to operate from improvised landing strips such as roads or highways....a useful consideration if your airbase has been destroyed.

This book on the Grippen gives background on the design influences, decisions made to make this fourth generation fighter. While Sweden has been able to sell some of these to other nations, they've never landed the big sale. Competition comes in the form of F-16's, MiG-29's, and the EuroFighter.

The book is on high gloss quality paper; there are tons of excellent color photos. The narrative is packed with statistics, data, facts, dates about the airframe, cockpit, engine, radar, weapons, you name it, and it's here. While technically oriented, the text is not so dry as to loose the interest of aviation fans. I found the book useful as a reference for models as there are photos of the plane in flight, landing, on the ground.

I like this book and recommend it for anyone interested in modern fighter jets, those who want to see something other than US or Soviet designs.

Excellent Technical Work- not meant for Modellers
his is an excellent book on the SAAB Gripen - the best so far till date.

There is a huge amount of technical information which is unexpected in 4.5/5 G Fighter - with superb photos and excellent design and diagrams - also replete with copious info on armament , avionics , radar , engine and design aspects .

Chapters on early development , exports and Gripen prospects are also excellent . Would have liked more info on versions C/D and some more on training aspects - otherwise a MUST BUY for technical coverage !!

Its not really meant for modellers - hence there are no close-ups or walk-arounds - one can buy the relevant IAPR for that.

Nice for enthusiasts, not so hot for modelers
The book is okay.It should have been run by the editing department another time or two though as there are a lot of gramatical errors and typos and such.
The story of the Gripen is told fairly well however, with lots of development details and obscure but interesting facts.The text can be somewhat disjointed though and could have been better organized.Even with that there is lots of great info in this book.
For modelers: you're out of luck.Almost 0 detail shots.There is a good section on cockpit development but only a few photos and you can find better ones on the net.Most of the pictures in the book are very nice but are just generic, here's-the-Gripen shots.A few photos are terribly pixilated as well.
Anyway if you want info on the Gripen, go for it.If you want a modeling reference, well, there isn't really one yet.

Aerofax produces a solidly detailed book on this versatile 4th Generation combat aircraft
In the world of aviation books, Midland Publishing can be considered a leading authority on a diverse range of civil and military aircraft. The majority of titles published under the Aerofax and Red Star banners deal with Russian/Soviet or British/US aircraft. Some of the best work in the field are the volumes by Russian/Soviet aviation expert Yefim Gordon, such as the recent titles on Soviet Secret Bomber Projects and the Su-24 FENCER. Midland also does an excellent job examining aircraft from other countries, such as this solid volume on Sweden's JAS-39 Gripen multi-role aircraft by Dutch author Gerard Keijsper.

The JAS-39 Gripen was the first of the world's 4th generation combat aircraft to take flight and enter into front-line service. It followed in the famed footsteps of its predecessors, the J-29 Tunnan, J-32 Lansen, J-35 Draken, and AJ-37 Viggen, whose unique and elegant designs made them favorites of aviation enthusiasts worldwide. Designed in response to a 1980 Swedish Air Force (Svenska Flygvabnet) RFP for a multi-role combat aircraft to replace both the fighter/attack and recon models of the Viggen, the Gripen was the winning design of IG-JAS, a joint consortium of Swedish companies led by SAAB that included Volvo and Ericssen. The Gripen's basic design of single engine, side air intakes, and delta wing with canards mounted just under the cockpit was mandated by the unique Swedish requirements that have guided previous designs like the Draken and Viggen: the aircraft should be single-engined to keep maintenance and cost down, must be able to operate from short roadways, and should have a quick-surge capability.

On 14 September 1982, Gripen took off on its first test flight. Over several years numerous prototypes were tested and dozens of modifications to the digital fly-by-wire systems were made, resulting in a highly capable, dependable, and reliable airplane that has suffered only 3 airframe losses in its entire history. Gripen carries a 27-mm internal cannon and can carry a diverse range of weaponry such as AMRAAM, Meteor, Sidewinder, and Maverick on its eight weapon points. Coupled with air-to-air refueling capability, LANTIRN targeting pods, and AESA radar, Gripen has a bark equal to its bite. The aircraft's single F-404J engine produces 18,000lbs of thrust with afterburner, enabling it to reach speeds of up to Mach-2. Twenty-four years and 60,000 flight hours later, over 200 Gripens are in front-line service with the Swedish Air Force and export Gripens are equipping the Air Forces of Hungary, South Africa, and the Czech Republic. Gripen's low cost and high performance has made it a leading contendor for foreign military sales.

Keijsper's book conforms with the fairly standard Aerofax format. The book begins with an overview, discusses design histories and test regimens, explains weapons and avionics systems, then moves into the aircraft in-service and its export versions and sales. The text is accompanied by a wealth of photographs, with over 250 color and black and white photographs in 176 pages. Three-way design views that effectively illustrate the design process are also included, which helps the reader in understanding the nature of aircraft design immensely. A nice tough are squadron patches from many of the squadrons currently operating Gripen as well as detail on the Swedish Order of the Gripen Knights, which is a professional group of Gripen pilots who are awarded badges based on experience and proficiency. The level of detail offered in this book is incredible, essentially providing everything you could hope to know. It is dated, being written in 2003 and published in 2004, and could stand an update on the major differences in the C/D models over the original A/B, but that is information that can be found elsewhere.

There are some flaws in this book that bring it down a few notches. First, no biography of the author is provided. The only detail offered by the publisher is that Keijsper is Dutch and lives in the Czech Republic. He clearly received large amounts of information from the Gripen Consortium and the Svenska Flygvabnet (in fact the book often reads like a press release) but the author's credentials are brought into question. The structuring of the chapters is a bit awkward. Chapter 3, Improving the Breed would have been better suited as a discussion after Chapter 8, Into Service. There is a 2-page chapter on Extreme High Alpha Test Flying that serves no real purpose, and should have been removed. There are minor errors in the text, such as the comment that the Gripen has supercruise capability, which with a thrust-to-weight ratio of 0.9 seems hard to believe, but overall nothing too alarming. There is a disconnect between the photos captions and the text which make them feel like two separate narratives and there are numerous grammatical errors, likely the result of translation from Swedish to Dutch to English. Minor stuff to be sure, but something a keener eye should have caught in the editing process. Overall though, this volume on Gripen has a necessary place on the bookshelf of both aviation enthusiast and military analyst for years to come. The photography and design diagrams alone are worth the purchase price, and this book lives up to the standard set by the Aerofax banner.

The next few years will be crucial for Gripen, as it nears the end of its production run and fulfillment of its current foreign order book. Without follow-on orders from the Swedes or a substantial export order, the production line may close and this graceful aircraft will slowly age its way into obsolescence. Conversely, should the US Joint Strike Fighter be delayed, countries like Denmark, Norway, and Australia may look to Gripen as a ready-made affordable solution, ensuring its continued production for many more years. For now though, Gripen patrols the skies over 4 nations, vigilantly watching and protecting against external threats and ensuring a continued place for Swedish combat aircraft in enthusiast's hearts and the world's skies.

Huge disappointment
Ok, this is written from a modelers standpoint.
The big problem is 90% of the pics are flight pics. very few on the ground so as far as getting detail walk around shots for modeling? FORGET it! no useful pics of the landing gear, no line drawings of the cockpit beyong the front panel, no shots of the wheels, no close ups of panel and rivit detail, no usable closeups of engine nozzles. 6 pics I had immediately recognized and had downloaded from the internet, there 2 poorly done pics of pilot/with suit. and the helmets were only lightly addressed. If you want page after page after page of pretty plane in flight shots, then you will like this book. it does do a good textural historical overview of development of the type though.
I bought the book brand new and subsequently saw it available used for 6 dollars. BUMMER! in fact, i have other aerofax titles, and they are VERY useful, dont know what happened with this particular book. ... Read more
