the cover of this book is actually pink so when you hear people talk about the pink book - this is it. it is an absolute must have for anyone with a DS child trying to get them in a mainstream classroom. it has all the concrete evidence needed to force the issue with the school as well as a ton of practical suggestions and examples of what needs to be done to make it work. i take this book to every IEP meeting we have.

My students love to play with the math mats. They are learning and do not realize that they are learning. It is a great resource to put into independent centers. It is a great time filler for when you have a few extra minutes. It is also great to play with small groups.

I teach 2nd grade Special Education and this book has been amazing for me so far.The game boards are in black and white - but you can copy them on colored card stock or color them if you want.Some of my students need to play games or compete in order to participte. An AWESOME guide for tech integration!
The book, "Teaching With Technology: Creating Student Centered Classrooms," written by Sanholtz, Ringstaff and Dwyer and published by Teachers College Press in 1997 is a detailed account of a longitudinal study conducted by the Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow Project in the 1990's. Do not let the year this was published affect the interest level in this book.

The Apple Computer Company conducted an enormous study to investigate the impact that technology would have on student achievement. The project, which lasted approximately ten years, involved 5 school districts from various areas in the country with a variety of socio-economic levels and student ages.The selected classrooms were provided with a computer for every student and teacher to use in the classroom and another computer to use at home. Enormous amounts of data were collected in several forms including test results, journal writing and interviews.

Once the data was analyzed, several similar patterns emerged at every location.Teachers went through an evolutional process as they learned to teach in a technology-rich environment. Several chapters of the book are devoted to each stage and the book is written with a great blend of data and authentic journal entries from teachers in the project.Through the journal entries and interviews, the researchers concluded that the teachers were not only learning to teach with technology, but truly undergoing a paradigm shift in their teaching philosophy and beliefs.

I absolutely loved this book and the detailed picture it gave of the process of truly integrating technology into a classroom setting.Some of the problems the teachers encountered in the early 90's are outdated - chalk dust interfering with computer filters and trouble with floppy disks.However, I believe the struggle and fear that teachers encounter learning to use equipment they do not feel comfortable with remains the same.The processes outlined in the book are a valuable resource and I would recommend this book to any person involved in Instructional Technology!

Ideas stand up 10 years after publication
Insightful and compelling research about teaching with technology.Thoughtfully examines the stages, problems, and evolution of technology-rich classrooms. This research is just as fresh today as it was when it came out.

Woefully outdated
I am a graduate student majoring in teaching technology and I thought this book might help my research, but it is very outdated. Unless you are in a school that has no technology at all, you might want to skip this one.

An Educational Technology Success Story
Sandholtz, Ringstaff and Dwyer wrote an excellent book based on their experiences with the Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow (ACOT).ACOT was an ongoing program in which technology was implemented in classrooms for almost ten years.The book provides details about the ongoing program as well as the outcomes.The program had several success stories and demonstrated that technology can be used effectively in schools.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the field of educational technology.I read this book for a graduate level course at Teachers College, Columbia University. ... Ah ha! The missing link.
If you're looking at this book, you've probably already studied ASL to some degree and are looking to further develop your signing and/or teaching skills. You surely know that there is a large selection of introductory books on very basic signs, a number of available dictionaries - some barely adequate and some quite good, and a small number of dense, academic works that delve into various aspects of the linguistics of ASL. To me, at least, there seems to be a conspicuous gap: a scant few books go into any depth describing and teaching real-world ASL grammar.

The popular "Learning American Sign Language" skims the surface, and "Grammar, Gesture and Meaning in American Sign Language" goes into substantial depth, but reading this book produced the big "Ah ha!" moment for me. It's not glamorous, not cutting edge, but it doesn't have to be. Instead, it is well structured, includes an appropriate amount of pictures, illustrations, diagrams, etc. to break down the structure of a visual language into manageable pieces so that they can be understood and reassembled into expressions with real meaning and color. The book is on point and useful from the start.

Life is a journey, not a destination, but all the same, I wish I would have just found this book first - at the beginning of my search. I'll bet that you won't be disappointed with this one.

Deep... ASL as a language, a system for glossing, sentencestructure... just what I needed.

excellent resource for students
I went through an interpreter training program in the early 1980's, and this book was considered our 'bible' for the entire program. It is not meant as a stand-alone for learning ASL, but as an adjunct when taking classes on ASL or enrolled in an interpreter preparation program. Even though it was written many years ago, the content is still salient today and is an important resource on my bookshelf. As a practicing interpreter for 25 years, I frequently look at chapters when I am mentoring someone or forget how to explain something in particular. The information on Deaf culture is especially valuable as well.
The technical nature of the book is akin to explaining the linguistical nature of a spoken language, something critical to anyone learning ASL as a second language. I still see it used in programs today as a means of supplementing classroom lecture information. Only individuals serious about in-depth learning of American Sign Language will appreciate and benefit from this book. It is not fluff; learning the linguistic nature of ANY language requires dedication and time, and this applies to ASL as well. You cannot learn any language from a book, you learn it from associating with native users of that language. This book is excellent to use for the linguistic and theoretical basis for what you see and use when conversing with native users. You will not be disappointed if you use this in conjunction with classes and conversing with Deaf individuals whose native language is ASL. I highly recommend this book. It gives you a well-rounded education in the grammar of ASL in one handy reference. Forget 12 years of taking English classes from 1st. grade until you graduated high school. If you use this book as it is intended, it gives you all that information and more.

Excellent Resource for Teachers & Serious Students
This book is designed for a teacher as part of the "Green Books" American Sign Language series; however, it is a very useful guide to ASL Grammar and Culture for anyone studying American Sign Language seriously (I, myself, am not a teacher, but have a copy of the book).

I was introduced to the book when I first began learning sign language, and it was very confusing to me.I would have benefited, at the time, much better from an ASL dictionary or simpler sign book.My recommendation to those of you who have just begun learning (or would like to learn) ASL would be NOT to buy this book just YET!Start with something less daunting and sophisticated (after all, it is designed for those already familiar with ASL and preparing a class curriculum).

What the book will give you is an excellent explanation of the sociolinguistic nature of American Sign Language--something you typically will not receive from a ASL Dictionary.For example: how sentences are structured, topicilization, rhetorical questions, relative clauses, expression of time, pronominalization, subject and object usage, the use of classifiers, locatives ... to name a few.

Absolutely engaging and really effective literature response activities.
The ideas in this book are simply wonderful to make kids read and respond to literature in a fun way. The book is divided into four main sections, each one devoted to one of the four literary elements: character, plot, setting, and theme. For each section, it provides several ideas to have students elaborate on the given literary element. Although each project is exemplified with a specific chapter book, the ideas can be adapted to other books as well. In fact, it provides titles of other chapter books that can be worked with the same projects.In my case, with second graders, I have even used some of the activities with picture books.

This book contains clear instructions, diagrams and templates to make the projects. Some of the activities included are: making a comic strip, a 3D plant-shaped graphic organizer, accordion books, a "character's personality pizza", a "time travel machine" (kids love that!), a board game, a tourist brochure, a treasure chest and many more.

Teaching Teens and Reaping Results
Although this book is focused on the author's experience as an inner-city West Coast educator, I found the ideas (and inspiration) just as applicable to my rural Mid-West teaching. The book presents real world ideas on relating to teens, not your typical textbook pedagogy. In my opinion, THIS is the type of book teachers need to read more of.

Must Read for All Teachers Working With Teens
I was so into this book that I was up late reading it on the first night of my spring break.My husband admonished me, "What are you reading that for?It's the first night of your vacation."My reply?"Because this guy is my new teacher hero!"Like the author, I also work in a Title 1 school and face many of the same issues of poverty, apathy, and illiteracy.I am sure that is one reason his reflections and ideas resonated with me, but I do believe any teacher working with today's teens can benefit from reading this book. Three-peat Teacher of the Year and YA author Alan Sitomer is a glass half-full kind of guy, and the proof in the school-cafeteria pudding comes in TEACHING TEENS AND REAPING RESULTS.As advertised on the front cover, it contains "stories, strategies, tools, and tips," though heavier on the "stories and tips" than the "strategies and tools."If you're a teacher, then, seeking a book that's bulging with ready-to-go, practical lesson plans, try another book.While it offers a few lessons you can try, this book is more focused on Alan's personal experience as an inner-city teacher in LA and on how those experiences can help you as a teacher -- whether you're in a city like him or in the middle of a field in Vermont.
