This book outlines the development of space technology for military purposes from its very beginnings during World War II right up to the latest, most sophisticated systems. The author starts with references to the prewar era, then goes on to discuss German rocketry during World War II and their bold wartime ambitions, which were finally developed during the Cold War. By the mid-1950s, space was being visualized as the next big battlefield, and both the U.S. and Soviet Union had ambitions to expand their domains into the solar system. Many of these ideas were completely impractical, way beyond possible realization, extremely dangerous, and completely unaffordable. By the start of manned spaceflight, missions became politically motivated, although military projects continued in the background and this would eventually surface as the Star Wars proposals.
This is a serious, factual study about the many projects that have come to the drawing board since the very beginning of space technology development; from the early experiments by the Germans in World War II, through the X-plane era, 'Star Wars', and then to the advanced spaceplane projects such as NASP (National Aerospace Plane), Copper Coast, and the Aurora spaceplane, Soviet spaceplanes and long-range USAF hypersonic strike and orbital aircraft. Very good book
This is a very detailed, authoritative reference book about military space projects usually hardly known. Definitely a must to have for those interested in this unusual subject, for which good books are hard to find. Great pictures too.

It's a good start!
I think it is a good starting point to write a comprehensive book about military and dual purposes space projects and technologies.The book is well illustrated has a good pictures quality and print overall.It would be better if the book would be structured by the similar technology and historical development (Mercury vs. Vostok, Skylab vs. Salyut, Shuttle vs. Buran, X-20 vs. Hermes, etc.) rather then by the country's ambitions and by the projects at the same time, which is somewhat confusing.I understand that it is impossible to write about every project that was existed or currently is under development, however I would like to consider a few, perhaps for the next edition: VETA, Sanger (Germany), Concept Ascender (UK), SHECMA, Ariane (France), Hope (Japan), Shavit (Israel), Shenzhou, Project 921-3 (China), Navaho G-26, Snark SM-62, High Altitude Research Program (HARP) as a suborbital artillery gun, X-37 (X-40A), X-43 (US).For the Soviet Union secret military projects I would recommend the book by Anton Pervushin "Battle for Stars the Space Opposition" (ISBN 5-17-014587-X). Unfortunately for many readers this book is written in Russian.Overall, I would recommend Bill Rose book for the people who like airspace technology, its history, and development because there are a lot of useful information in it regarding different projects and concepts which are still can be applicable today for the space exploration either with civil or dual purposes.For additional reading I would suggest the book by Giles Sparrow "Spaceflight" which is good about the space exploration, programs, and technologies in general.

Hides its light under a bushel
The first thing I would say about this is thats its a really fantastic book. On space projects and so on its one of the most comprehensive I've found. Don't expect to find pictures of UFO's in here, do expect to find a lot of interesting NASA and 'military' space projects. Very good section on Russian technology, nuclear space technology, Nazi programs, British programs, space born weapons. Good on things like the lost NASA programs like the X-33 and other advanced launch SSTO vehicles. - And above all lots of really good quality pictures of all these things.
What isn't here is anything thats still highly classified or super top secret but what were you expecting?

What is neccessary for the future
This book tells of the hopes and plans to put people living on the moon and mars. The planet is already overpopulated, so this ought to be done right away. Going to settle somewhere else will give people on earth and up there, some breathing room - the world needs it!

Project Constellation, a work in progress
This book is as clear a guide to the plans to return to the Moon as can be published at such an early date. It gives a broad overview of the craft that will be built to undertake the journey .
The sections on the Ares vehicles is interesting, and showsthe Shuttle heritage of the Orion program. The Orion section is a little indistinct, as the Spacecraft is still undergoing design changes, and the section onthe Altair Lander is sketchier still, as at the time, they were still referring to it by the acronym LSAM or Lunar Surface Access Module.
This book is great for current readers who are following the current build -up to a Lunar return as well as providing future readers with a historical context to the earlier days of the Second Lunar explorations

It really does fit in your pocket
The best book I've seen so far on the Ares / post space shuttle rockets. This is a serious rocket designed to go primarily back into deep space, as opposed to the space shuttle which is just a trolley bus to space stations. The biggest version is as big as the old Saturn V.... anyone who's stood next to that thing knows this is one serious rocket...
Its a compact book but as these types of books date quite quickly, its ideal.

A Little Giant
Project Constellation seems to be more than just a single "project", in fact it is developing into a manned/highlift Space Transportation System, reaching from Low Earth Orbit to the Moon and, ultimately, to the planet Mars. Of course such a politically concieved system may lose its backing in the next election, but, assuming that it succeends in gathering financial and politcal momentum, it may eventually become what NASA now is aiming for.
What, then, is it all about? Well, you get the answer in this booklet, most of an answer anyway, as conceived in the year 2006-07. Today it is a veritable Little Giant of information and explanation. A couple of years from now it will, of course, be dated. Still some more years in the future, it will be a historical reference of what was visualized after the first NASA perusal of the George W Bush clarion call for Manned Space Exploration in the 2000:ies. I hope I will live long enough to compare the vision of 2006 with the reality of 2020.
Why only four stars? Again the bane of conflicting systems of weights and measures: ancient foot-pounds in the US, metric in the civilized world. One could use either, or, or both in parallell, in this booklet there is no clear line of preference. Please note, that NASA has decided that the lunar part of the program will be planned and executed in metric. All honour to the NASA of old, which landed 12 men on the Moon using the old imperial measurements in conjunction with the computer technology of the 1960-ies. ... Read more

Project Gemini Pocket Space Guide
Author Robert Godwin has done an excellent job with this entire series, with some additional information not known or not commonly known and a few new pictures. The cost is low, and the series seems to grow overnight.
This guide can be an excellent starter for kids & adults. I feel that it is important to share with my children the early space program and the pioneering spirit and efforts of so many, Project Gemini seems to get left out of history lessons and many people's minds. I lived through the program as a spectator, but as I grew up and met some of these poineers especially the astronauts, they seem to want to talk about accomplishments during Project Gemini as being the steps to landing on the Moon.
