Product Description
The Physical Geography of South America, the eighth volume in the Oxford Regional Environments series, presents an enduring statement on the physical and biogeographic conditions of this remarkable continent and their relationships to human activity. It fills a void in recent environmental literature by assembling a team of specialists from within and beyond South America in order to provide an integrated, cross-disciplinary body of knowledge about this mostly tropical continent, together with its high mountains and temperate southern cone. The authors systematically cover the main components of the South American environment - tectonism, climate, glaciation, natural landscape changes, rivers, vegetation, animals, and soils. The bookthen presents more specific treatments of regions with special attributesfrom the tropical forests of the Amazon basin to the Atacama Desert and Patagonian steppe, and from the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Pacific coasts to the high Andes. Additionally, the continents environments are given a human face by evaluating the roles played by people over time, from pre-European and European colonial impacts to the effects of modern agriculture and urbanization, and from interactions with El Niño events to prognoses for the future environments of the continent. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very thorough and fun projects!
We love this series.Includes a map of South America and covers the five themes of geography. There are also great ideas on how to use this book.Topics covered are:Introducing and locating South America; hemishperes; water & landforms; oceans, lakes & rivers; Andes mts., Amazon rainforest, Gran Chaco & Pampas, Atacama Desert, Altiplano; comparing regions; political divisions; locating cities by latitude & longitude and using a compass rose; population, resources, imports, exports; plants & animals (including animals of the Galapagos Islands; and the people (Incas) and their languages. It has different activities to complete that are fun and interesting.
I read the review from the person about not having access to a commputer or the resources needed to complete a few of the assignments, but the library would have anything you need that you do not have access to at home; including a computer.

If you chose not to do every single page in the book (80 pgs. total) your children would still have a very comprehensive knowledge of South America when you finish.I homeschool and I let the kids choose which continent we are going to study next; which keeps them involved and excited about continuing geography.I highly recommend this series.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not enough info
The book has great ideas, but a lot of the information for the students to learn is not in the book. There are a lot of questions that students need to use atlases, the internet, or other non-fiction reference books to answer the questions. I do not have a lot of the resources needed for the students to answer the questions. ... Read more
