Product Description

The only advanced book on Squeak, an important up-and-coming programming language, and includes an introductory chapter to help those who know programming but not Squeak. Squeak is the only tool that allows users to explore computer music, digital sound, advanced user interfaces, 3-D computer graphics, Flash animation, and virtual machine creation (such as for embedded systems) across Windows, Macintosh, and Linux. This book is the best documentation of Squeak for those purposes. Provides details on 3-D Computer Graphics, Advanced UI, Streaming Audio, and other multimedia topics. Provides detailed tours of the architecture of a virtual machine (including tradeoffs), porting it to multiple platforms and extensions mechanisms. Includes description of the efforts of an Open Source Community. Appropriate for all professionals in Advanced Object-Oriented Programming, Multimedia Systems and Developments, and Software Engineering Special-Topics: Open-Source, and Embedded Systems fields as an authoritative guide to the use of Squeak as a Multimedia Tool.

3-0 out of 5 stars A vision emerging.
This book was an ambitious attempt to describe both a vision of what personal computing could be and to providea much needed technical overview of Squeak.Although largely successful, the buyer should be warned that some chapters in this book refer to online software that has yet to be written or is not currently available online. In particular, Alan Kay provides an unintended joke with his forward to the book.He states that Squeak is a "dynamic medium for creative thought" and that the foreward to the book should be an online active essay in Squeak.Unfortunately, the essay, "It Should Be Active, But Where (and When) Will It Be?" does not yet exist!

As Squeak continues to evolve rapidly, this book may become obsolete in a few years, but it currently provides some of the best technical overviews of Squeak's Morphic UI, networking, 3D animation, and other fun topics. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Smalltalk MT is an implementation of the Smalltalk programming language created in 1994 to deal with some of the shortcomings of Smalltalk-80 style of implementations. Smalltalk MT adopts a different approach in that the Smalltalk source is compiled to machine code before being executed. This allows the developer the freedom of working with compiled code without the need for the traditional compile-link-run cycle. This is like a specialized form of incremental or dynamic compilation. Smalltalk MT directly interfaces to DLLs in exactly the same manner as C which allows DLL calls to be tested directly in a Workspace, which allows a scripting style of approach to accessing any DLL based code. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Although Java and Smalltalk share some vital characteristics there are certainly also important differences. The objective of the SICS Java Port Project is to create tools and methodology to translate a large software application from IBM VisualAge for Smalltalk to Java. My main motivation for this book is to present some of the major technical issues we have encountered as part of translation, present alternatives and the solution we chose. Each problem will be briefly demonstrated, followed by a short discussion. Then we give our chosen solution and a brief demonstration of the results. In our concrete project, the approach has been highly successful. We have found ways to overcome the most important language differences. Although it is impossible to directly apply the experiences of this project to other Smalltalk systems, the results should be promising for others with a similar challenge at hand. Hopefully the reader will find the discussions relevant, and if not immediately reusable, at least serve as inspiration for developing custom solutions of their own. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
SuperCollider is the most important domain-specific audio programming language of the last decade, with potential applications that include real-time interaction, installations, electroacoustic pieces, generative music, and audiovisuals. The SuperCollider Book is the essential reference to this powerful and flexible language, offering students and professionals a collection of tutorials, essays, and projects. [With contributions from top academics, artists, and technologists that cover topics at levels from the introductory to the specialized, it will be a valuable sourcebook both for beginners and for advanced users.]

SuperCollider, first developed by James McCartney, is an accessible blend of Smalltalk, C, and further ideas from a number of programming languages. Free, open-source, cross-platform, and with a diverse and supportive developer community, it is often the first programming language sound artists and computer musicians learn. The SuperCollider Book is the long-awaited guide to the design, syntax, and use of the SuperCollider language. The first chapters offer an introduction to the basics, including a friendly tutorial for absolute beginners, providing the reader with skills that can serve as a foundation for further learning. Later chapters cover more advanced topics and particular topics in computer music, including programming, sonification, spatialization, microsound, GUIs, machine listening, alternative tunings, and non-real-time synthesis; practical applications and philosophical insights from the composer’s and artist’s perspectives; and “under the hood,” developer’s-eye views of SuperCollider’s inner workings. A Web site accompanying the book offers code, download links to the application itself and its source code, and a variety of third-party extras, extensions, libraries, and examples. ... Read more
