Product Description
This book discusses effects of predation by sea otters in nearshore benthic communities of the North Pacific. It includes chapters written by researchers in kelp forest, rocky intertidal, and soft sediment habitats. They review current knowledge and areas of controversy, present new data, and identify needs for additional study. In the concluding chapters areas of consensus as well as barriers to overgeneralization and accurate prediction are noted. This is the first technical book focusing on empirical studies of effects of a marine mammal on marine ecosystems. Researchers, fisheries and environmental conservation organizations will find this book a valuable study. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This is otter-ly fun!
We bought this soon after my son and I saw the otters playing at the zoo, and became completely enamoured with these creatures. His stuffed otter, which he named Ottery, was his best companion for years. This book provided a great introduction to some of their habits, and, even better, thoughtfully portrayed the ever present theme of young ones wanting to be BIG.My younger daughter recently discovered this among our library, and it is now a favorite with her as well. Now, we just need another trip to the zoo to watch them play. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GRANDMA
A TRULY GREAT OTTER STORY WITH MANY FACTS. MY GRANDSON LOVE SIT AND SO DO I. THANK YOU

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it for the illustrations
Lisa Bonforte's illustrations of Sea Otter Pup and his mother are truly lovely to behold. The illustrations add a lot to the story showing otters playing, eating sea urchins, resting in beds of sea kelp and diving for food. The story of Sea Otter Pups birth and survival is a great story for kids who will admittedly probably need some assistance by adults in some of the vocabulary...but that's what grownups are for, right? There is a nice little summation of history of the sea otter and a glossary or terms used at the end of the book.It may lead to more learning as most kids won't quite know how to picture an abalone's foot! So, enjoy the pictures and read with the young people in your life!

5-0 out of 5 stars I don't have time to write reviews but...
I just had to say, in case anyone is looking for science bookswhich can both entertain and inform their young children, this title is a delight! The illustrations are endearing, but the text is what stands out in the book, for--unlike most children's "science" twaddle out there--it is truly lyrical.Children don't need short, choppy sentences which merely regurgitate bland facts in a shotgun approach to "teaching" or "informing".That kind of writing certainly doesn't make for interesting reading! My young reader was delighted with the tale of young Otter, my 2-year-old equally enthralled.I know a book is a keeper when I am asked to read it again immediately.

This book has both literary and scientific merit.A rare find in my search for homeschool materials that can impart knowledge, love for learning and the enjoyment of reading quality prose, all in one appealing package. Not sure as I type this what age is recommended, but my son is currently about halfway through first grade level reading and will be able to tackle this by himself within a year at most.A child up to age 8 would be delighted by this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
This book is laborious, overwritten and poor quality. It is as if the author is trying to demonstrate how many words one can fit into a sentence. For insight into Otters, at a child's reading level, choose a different book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A scientifically accurate, highly enjoyable tale
Otter On His Own: The Story Of A Sea Otter is a children's story by Doe Boyle about a young otter growing up in the natural world. From learning how to eat sea urchins to exploring the underwater cove near where he was born and the world beyond, Otter On His Own is a scientifically accurate, highly enjoyable tale. Simple yet inspiring color illustrations by Robert Lawson add depth to the watery world of the otter pup. ... Read more

Product Description
For more than ten thousand years, Native Americans from Alaska to southern California relied on aquatic animals such as seals, sea lions, and sea otters for food and raw materials. Archaeological research on the interactions between people and these marine mammals has made great advances recently and provides a unique lens for understanding the human and ecological past. Archaeological research is also emerging as a crucial source of information on contemporary environmental issues as we improve our understanding of the ancient abundance, ecology, and natural history of these species. This groundbreaking interdisciplinary volume brings together archaeologists, biologists, and other scientists to consider how archaeology can inform the conservation and management of pinnipeds and other marine mammals along the Pacific Coast. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Educational!
"Quiet Miracles of the Brain" - begins relating the results of a left hemispherectomy for a young boy with seizures.Music, poetry, and math are left-side functions - yet, in Matt's case the knowledge and capability traveled from the left side of his brain to the other. The ability to transfer is highest prior to adolescence.

Differences in embryo cells occur after about 100 cells are present, about three days after fertilization. Many mental illnesses have physical brain aspects.Emotions are also biochemical.

"Israel's Galilee" begins with Israeli police sent in by the hundreds to stop a pro-Syrian celebration.Violence has long been a part of life here - eg. the slaughter of thousands of Christians by Muslims in the Crusades, and up to 6,000 years ago in history.

Eight hundred fifty thousand Arabs live inside Israel as citizens, simmering for 50 years.Four hundred fifty thousand of those are in Galilee, vs. 447,000 Jews.Galilee's Jordan River and the Sea of Galilee supply over one-third of Israel's fresh water.Over 1.3 million christian tourists come to Israel each year.

Israel destroyed 165 Palestinian villages in Galilee when Arab nations attacked it in 1948 after Israel declared its independence. The Golan Heights were taken by Israel from Syria in the Six Day War of 1967; it was settle by 12,000 Jews.

Arabs are precluded from building on much of their property; limits also exist on their education, jobs, and public governments.Arabs and Jews live mostly separate lives. Some Jews promulgate greater Jewish immigration to prevent being outnumbered by Arabs; this then results in greater conflict. The hoped for bridge to peace in Galilee is hard to find.

"Living a Dream" tells of the idyllic scenery and environment of the Puget Sound area.Incredibly, however, despite reporting on pods of orcas just a few feet from shore being followed by numerous admirers on as many as 60 small boats, no orca photos appear in the article. ... Read more

Chapters: Sea Otter. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 113. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The sea otter (Enhydra lutris) is a marine mammal native to the coasts of the northern and eastern North Pacific Ocean. Adult sea otters typically weigh between 14 and 45 kg (30 to 100 lb), making them the heaviest members of the weasel family, but among the smallest marine mammals. Unlike most marine mammals, the sea otter's primary form of insulation is an exceptionally thick coat of fur, the densest in the animal kingdom. Although it can walk on land, the sea otter lives mostly in the ocean. The sea otter inhabits nearshore environments where it dives to the sea floor to forage. It preys mostly upon marine invertebrates such as sea urchins, various molluscs and crustaceans, and some species of fish. Its foraging and eating habits are noteworthy in several respects. First, its use of rocks to dislodge prey and to open shells makes it one of the few mammal species to use tools. In most of its range, it is a keystone species, controlling sea urchin populations which would otherwise inflict extensive damage to kelp forest ecosystems. Its diet includes prey species that are also valued by humans as food, leading to conflicts between sea otters and fisheries. Sea otters, whose numbers were once estimated at 150,000300,000, were hunted extensively for their fur between 1741 and 1911, and the world population fell to 1,0002,000 individuals in a fraction of their historic range. A subsequent international ban on hunting, conservation efforts, and reintroduction programs into previously populated areas have contributed to numbers rebounding, and the species now occupies about two-thirds of its former range. The recovery of the sea otter is considered an important success in marine conservation, alt...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=567471 ... Read more
