4-0 out of 5 stars Quick Scrapbooking Ideas for Gifts
The book shows a good variety of theme and specialty scrapbooks suitable for gift giving. Techniques include mini-albums, flip calendars, and other novel ways to document an event or honor an individual. Being new to scrapbooking, some of the instructions were too brief for me and didn't always clarify terms or show detailed enough examples.
Still there are plenty of ideas to be gained. Each page shows two or three colorful album pages.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't judge a book by its cover...
I bought this off of Amazon without getting a chance to actually look inside of it first, so I was going by 1) other reviews, 2) the description and 3) the cover. After looking over all of these, it sounded like the book might have some interesting, fresh, "funky" ideas for gift books. So I ordered it. When I got it, though, I was quite disappointed. It DOES have some fresh ideas... *some*. There is one chapter that contains these, but most of the book consists of what I think to be rather typical scrapbooking. Nothing wrong with that, if that's your thing... but it isn't mine, and everything I saw really led me to expect something more interesting. I guess I should have expected a typical scrapbook book, since it is from Memory Makers. I have a few issues of their magazine, and the items featured in that are a lot more interesting that most of what I saw in this book.

Still not a book I mind owning, but not what I expected. I might have paid $4 or $5 for this used, but I would never have paid this price for it new had I actually seen the inside first.

So, buyer beware... if you're into fresh, funky, vibrant, altered sorts of art... the cover is a bit deceiving, and this book may not be for you. Get a look at it, at a library or a bookstore, before you buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for those who prefer to give personal gifts
There is nothing more appreciated than a gift from the heart, and making a keepsake scrapbook for a family member, friend, or really just about anyone who touches your life is a gift that will be treasured.

MAKING GIFT SCRAPBOOKS IN A SNAP is an indispensable book for ideas for small themed scrapbooks and for techniques (which many experienced scrappers will probably already know about) to include on the pages. However, for someone crunched for time, or a simple scrapper like myself, having step-by-step instructions to follow is exactly what is needed.

Some ideas included in the book are: year-in-review, bridal shower/wedding, timeline (i.e. for a pregnancy or baby's first year), family history, calendar of events, memorial, ABC albums, children's storybooks, altered books, and a brag book; but really, this is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of themes presented.

With 20 projects included and an additional 50 album ideas to inspire you, you will never be at a loss for ideas to show those close to you how much you care.

4-0 out of 5 stars A basic guide to creating quick little scrapboook albums
Three and a half stars for a job adequately done.

The title of this book brought up all sorts of expectations for me:yes, I know, you'd think I'd learn by now, huh? Well, when "gift", "scrapbook" and "In a snap" are in the same sentence, my mind makes connections before I know it.These expectations were:

1. The book would focus on small scale scrapbooks (smaller than 8&1/2 by 11) suitable for gifting
2. I would learn how to plan such an album from start to finish
3. The author would teach ways to organize my time so that I could finish the album quickly
4. The book would thoroughly picture some examples of complete gift scrapbooks and/or layout plans, from the first page to the end.
5. I would be shown both how to complete a variety of ready-made albums and also how to make our own albums from scratch
6. The layouts featured inside would be the same kind of high-quality, cutting-edge styles found in Memory Makers magazine

I'd say most of these expectations were fulfilled.I did learn a lot about how to plan my gift scrapbook before I started, tips on how to unify the look of the album and how to cut down on unnecessary materials so that I could work quickly. There were some cute mini album projects detailed in the last section which are to be made from scratch. There were a lot of ideas for theme albums that I wouldn't have thought of on my own, but which I will use to make great gifts for my family and friends in the years to come.I really wasn't surprised that the looks of the scrapbooks that author Pam Klassen used to illustrate these methods were on the simple side-it makes sense that simpler means faster. Not a collage style clutter in the bunch (which suits my style perfectly).

The two that weren't fulfilled do bother me a bit, though.Numbers 4 and 6 just didn't come through for me. We see a few object lessons illustrated with more than one page from an album, but never the whole thing:I wanted to see how a gift album should flow from start to finish. It's one thing to read about it, quite another to see the pictures. At the very least I thought there should have been some flow charts or diagrams to guide me in the final organization; I wouldn't have to follow them slavishly, but they would have helped me with the "big picture" much more than just text. This is a visual medium, after all.

My opinion about that last one, number 6, is based on having read most of the other books that Memory Makers has ever produced.I am familiar with their publications, which usually have at least a few layouts that "wow" me and many more that make impressions on my own layouts long after I am done reading.Making Gift Scrapbooks in a Snap had some nice but unimpressive layouts compared to those other books.I just didn't come away inspired. As any scrapbooker knows, that's half the reason to buy these books!

So, this is a good solid guide to the basic concept of making quick gift scrapbooks.I suspect that beginning scrapbookers will be the ones to get the most out of this, while the more advanced album crafters will be wanting a little more.

2-0 out of 5 stars Projects are not very good
I hate to write a negative review about someone else's creative endeavor, but I think I should share so that people will make an informed decision. These porjects are not well done or very creative, it looks like a bit of a mess.Nothing in here that I could use, and none of the resources are clearly listed. The photos are done well.I would skip and try any other book on mixed media jewelry making.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't own it; saw it in the store; here's what I remember
I'm giving it four stars because it had information in it that I wanted and projects that I thought were cute. There were a lot of projects that used little frames, which is what I am interested in.She tells you in each project which supplier sells the frame and the suppliers are listed in the back along with page numbers for their products used--very handy. She used the same suppliers for several projects, so you wouldn't have to shop around at a million different websites.

The projects I remember were mostly charm bracelets. There was a nice variety of different bracelets, but I don't remember what the other projects were.

Her projects were sometimes cute, sometimes pretty. They tended to be more appealing to a general audience than artistically snobby types (forgive me, snobs!).I found them motivating and inspiring.

I would have bought this book last night had the funding to do so been available.I like it when the author tells you who supplied the item she's showcasing.

Sorry the review is so sketchy.I hope this much info will help someone who is interested in knowing a little more about the book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview to Get Started Scrapbooking
When I see more than 50 used copies for sale on Amazon, that tells me that people aren't holding onto this book.As a beginning scrapbooker, I'm finding it useful and inspiring.
It shows the variety of supplies available, discusses archival needs, and photo handling.
The projects take one or two pages each with a full-color sample. It tells the materials, tools, and instructions (step-by-step) to duplicate or make a similar scrapbook page.I think she shows a nice variety of techniques using torn edges, ribbons, fabric, etc.I particularly like the way she displayed the vintage photos and the sepia tones in the backgrounds.
Maybe a few scrapbooks from now, I'll find this book ho-hum, but for now "I think I'll keep it!"

3-0 out of 5 stars I expected more from this book
I live in Brazil and I am very interested in scrapbooking. To start in this art, I've ordered some books, including this one. It's not as disapointing and childish as another that I also get ("More than Memories", by Julie Stephani), but it's not very good at all.I I am still in the search of a book that teaches people from everywhere out of USA how to make creative scrapbooks. The point is that the books that I've found askes you to work with fabrics and material that you can find only in the USA.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
This book is great if you are new to scrapbooking. It will quickly acquaint you with the techniques needed to make beautiful layouts. After you read through it a few times, however, and practice the designs thatinterest you the most, this book tends to stay tucked away on the shelf. The techniques and layouts used in this book are simple enough that you canremember it without having to refer to the book.If you only scrapbook afew times a year, this book would be a great buy. However, if youscrapbook often then save yourself the money and just go to the library tofind these ideas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book, a little weak on pictures.
This book I found very informative, and it had some really great ideas.I would have liked it to have had more pictures to go along with the instructions, rather than just the final result showing, but all in all, itwas worth the money to get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Artistic and Inspiring Book, Stuffed with Unique Ideas!
This book really inspired me to try different techniques and to use things on my pages that I never would have imagined. It walks you through the steps and products to help you become a expert scrapbooker and the ideas are easily incorporated into anyones book.It definatly a must have! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Happy Disney Pages
I am a total Disney and scrapbook fanatic which made this the perfect purchase for me. This book exhibits many pages of very cute layout ideas and craft projects. There are also quite a few Disney themed papers in different sizes to help you get started on your next layout.

There are basic tips for completing any size layout you desire. The "how-to" pages also show you how to create and size your own embellishments for your pages, not just basic layout samples. I found this book to be an excellent buy whether you are a beginner or an accomplished scrapbooker. I give it four stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good basic guide to those new to scrapbooking
I'm still rather new to scrapping, IMO only an extended family (11 people) Disney trip could possibly be a scrapping event. This bok is mainly about creating Disney themed pages and are not specifically geared at a Disney trip, but with a little imagination and modification, you can adapt almost everything in it.

I'm trying to get better at my layouts that have my pages really pop at you. I believe those type of pages come from practice, but also some basic skills lessons help. I found this book to have some basic info on paper piecing that I was unaware of. It also has some how to's that a beginner may not have figured out yet.

This book also contains 6 Paper Pizazz papers that are exclusive to this book. They include Bouncing Tigger, Pooh faces, fall leaves Piglet, Pooh's favorite things, Mickey silhouette on red and blue Mickey tiles.

It explains how to take a layout of one design (Pooh) and use another theme (Mickey). It has examples of the pages done both ways. I need some basic help and hints that are given in these pages.

I also have another Disney layout book that I like, but for a beginner, I found this book very helpful. It even shows you how to design a 8X11 page and turn it into a 12X12.

It gets only 4 1/2 stars because most of the paper is Pooh themes and Disney movie themes, not much Mickey. I think it is probably more for every day pages rather than a Disney trip, though I have used some of the cut outs and paper piecing patterns. If you are looking for ideas, I like the "Big Idea Book of Disney Memories" by Creating Keepsakes (oop). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Pleasing
Designing With Vellum contains a wealth of information as well as visuals to help develope a personal syle and creativity. I loved it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but no longer cutting edge.
When this book first came out it was something to write home about, but no longer.Unless you are brand new to scrapbooking and have never poked through a CK or a Memory Makers magazine you've seen most of these ideas before. That being said, it's a well done book with a lot of really nice looking examples. This one's time has probably passed for most scrapbookers who are looking for the most up to date trends.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Special
I bought this book hoping to learn new ways to use vellum. All I found were typical ideas that I had already thought of myself--and trust me, if I were a master at coming up with unique ideas, I would not have needed to buy this book. This book basically shows you how to use vellum as a background, for text, and for photo borders.I was hoping to find patterns that would teach me how to make unique vellum shapes and embellishments.A waste of money. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for the more advanced
I was delighted by the contents of this book! This is not a guide on how to digital scrapbook but rather a guide on how to create your own backgrounds and embellishments which is exactly what I was looking for.It is easy to follow, presuming you have some prior experience with Adobe Elements, which the author is clear to note. The book also does a great job of showing you multiple variations so your imagination begins to run wild.If you are looking for a book to teach you the basics of making a digital scrapbook, this isn't the right one but the author has a first book which should cover those basics.Overall, very pleased with the price and purchase!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Great Great for beginners
I love this book.It is very simple to understand, the author takes you step by step to many items to create for you digital scrapbooking elements. Once you have the basic concepts you can expand.I wish she would write a sequel or more advanced digital elements. She does have a web site and it has some tutorials on it.

2-0 out of 5 stars DD for Scrapbooking review
Text written in grey so it was hard to see.I have photoshop elements 7 and this book was based on PE 4 or so, so there were lots of long winded ways to do things that can now be easily done in PE 7.Easy to read but outdated now and limited in its content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource
This is a fantastic book. I had absolutely NO experience with Photoshop Elements or digital scrapbooking before opening this book, and I had no trouble following the "lessons". I now feel comfortable at a basic level not only with PSE, but also with creating digital scrapbook elements (papers, embellishments, brushes, effects). I can't wait to dive into all the other digital magazines I have. I was so impressed I found a used copy of her first digital scrapbooking book online and purchased it. Highly recommended for those interested in getting their feet wet with digital scrapbooking, especially creating their own elements. Also, fear not if you have a newer version of PSE than the 5.0 she works with in the book. I have PSE 7.0, and had little difficulty. There was only one button I could not find while going through the exercises, and I'm sure if I searched help, I could locate it if I wanted to.
