In this book, William Calin explores the renaissance through an examination of twentieth-century works in Scots, Breton, and Occitan minority languages flourishing inside the borders of the United Kingdom and France.

For each of the three bodies of literature Calin considers major authors whose works include novels, poetry and plays, and shows that all three literatures have evolved in a like manner, repudiating their romantic folk heritage and turning instead to modern and postmodern concerns. Drawing on current critical theories in periodization, postcolonialism and cultural studies, Calin raises a range of comparative questions: Is there a common form of narrative prevalent in minority cultures that is neither realism nor metafiction? Good but NOT the book conversations!
These CDS are not the conversations in the Teach Yourself Gaelic book!So don't expect to buy them and use them to follow the lessons in the book. THey are good cds and the the booklet helps you learn basic phrases in a conversational mode, but they can't be used with the larger book. That is disappointing and the cover is misleading because you can't tell that these CDs are not the same as those that come with the book in a set. Otherwise, great to use the CDs for learning how to say many things in Gaelic.

It does work
I listen on my iPod while i walk and am slowly learning some simple greetings...but enjoy it a lot and the process used to teach the language is very effective.

Excellent Help-Highly recommended
This conversation set is an excellent help to learning and practicing Scottish Gaelic especially if you live far from any other people or group that share your interest in learning this language. Speakers are easy to hear and follow. Conversation content is very useful and relevant to real-life interaction. The written booklet helps the English speaker begin to make the connection between the sounds of Gaelic and its very unique spelling method. Highly recommended.

I'm using this with "Teach Yourself Gaelic Complete Course", and it's very good for extra practice. My only complaints are the dialogues. They're not very lively and are a bit monotone. The dialogues in the complete course are much livelier. ... Read more

Excellent Resource
I ordered this book in order to use it for language research on a book that I am editing.It is an absolutely excellent resource for anyone who needs to understand the Scot's dialect.It is as it says, a dictionary, and one that give thorough, concise definitions of words.

The Concise Scots Dictionary presents an excellent 816-page source of definitions for Scots words. It also contains 39 pages on the history of Scots, with a clear explanation of the dictionary's format. Two appendices explain Scots currency, weights and measures, as well as churches in Scotland. I have bought it because I rely on it constantly as an invaluable aid to researching Scots history, with particular reference to the Weir family.

Edinburgh University Press puts out this super Scots Dictionary.It's often very hard to find good a Scots Dictionary or a Good Gaelic Dictionary.This one is VERY good.820 pages worth, not a little pocket size.It has meanings, spelling variants,pronunciation guide, information on when and were words are used denoting area and districts, grammatical information, and idioms & phrases.What I like best about it - entomologies of the words.So many dictionaries leave off the origins of words, which is so very important when writing history and historical fiction.

It's painstakingly edited and without flaws from start to finish.Best of all it's not teeny print.The print is very clear and easy on the eyes!
