Extractions: to ESL College Students Ru Zhang Bradley University More and more ESL (English as a Second Language) students come to the United States for their college education every year. "Researchers estimate that by the year 2000, ESL students will make up more than 25% of the college student population; colleges in some large cities have already reached this percentage" (Belanoff et.al. 211). It is critical that ESL teachers provide them with the kind of language skills they need to be successful in college and their future career. Marianne Celce-Murica has said: Celce-Murica's statement highlights the ongoing debate about grammar in ESL teaching and presents two extreme positions. We should not go to extremes. I have been teaching English as a foreign language in China for more than ten years, and I have been in a Master of Arts program in English for two semesters at Bradley University in Peoria, IL. Having been both an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher and an ESL student, I have developed a more definitive position about the role of English grammar in the teaching and learning of ESL. This paper focuses on whether traditional grammar should be taught to ESL students who come to the U.S. for higher education, and if so, what kind of traditional grammar should be taught and how.

Seamus Heaney On BEOWULF getting a grip on the grammar and vocabulary and place of the poems composition, paying minute The swedish dimension gradually becomes an important element http://www.wwnorton.com/nael/beowulf/introbeowulf.htm
Extractions: In the long ago, yet willable forward Again and again and again. 1 B EOWULF: T HE P OEM The poem called Beowulf was composed some time between the middle of the seventh and the end of the tenth century of the first millennium, in the language that is today called Anglo-Saxon or Old English. It is a heroic narrative, more than three thousand lines long, concerning the deeds of a Scandinavian prince, also called Beowulf, and it stands as one of the foundation works of poetry in English. The fact that the English language has changed so much in the last thousand years means, however, that the poem is now generally read in translation and mostly in English courses at schools and universities. This has contributed to the impression that is was written (as Osip Madelstam said of The Divine Comedy ) on official paper, which is unfortunate, since what we are dealing with is a work of the greatest imaginative vitality, a masterpiece where the structuring of the tale is as elaborate as the beautiful contrivances of its language. Its narrative elements may belong to a previous age but as a work of art it lives in its own continuous present, equal to our knowledge of reality in the present time.
HLW: Introduction (Printer-Friendly) A composition teacher might criticize the student's vocabulary, the pronunciation, the grammar, and the intelligibility, we might consider swedish and Danish http://www.indiana.edu/~hlw/Introduction/pf.html
Extractions: Indiana University Students studying linguistics for the first time often have misconceptions about what it is about and what it can offer them. They may think that linguists are authorities on what is correct and what is incorrect in a given language. But linguistics is the science of language; it treats language and linguistic behavior as phenomena to be studied scientifically. Linguists want to figure out how language works . They are no more in the business of making value judgments about people's language than geologists are in the business of making value judgments about the behavior of the earth. The book: organization and conventions Most linguistics texts draw their examples from an unconstrained set of languages. This has the disadvantage that students are left with little sense of how the different aspects of each language fit together. It also invites the kind of errors that may crop up when linguists rely on examples from a wide variety of other linguists. For these reasons, almost all of the examples in this book are limited to a set of ten languages. You can see the word for 'language' in each of these ten languages in the upper-left corner of the Table of Contents page, and, together with words in seven other languages, at the top of each page. If you're interested in knowing more about these languages, each is described briefly in

While completing my Bachelor's degree in Zoology I had the opportunity to take my first S.E.T.I. (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) class right here at The University of Washington. I found that my biological science background provided a strong foundation for thinking about ways in which life might evolve elsewhere in the galaxy. After that first class I was really hooked.
