Science Museums science museums as Environments for Learning. The numbers of science museums inthe United States and worldwide have exploded during the past 20 years. http://www.exploratorium.edu/IFI/resources/museumeducation/sciencemuseums.html
Extractions: Executive Associate Director, Exploratorium, San Francisco, CA A science museum is created by its contents and the activities relating to them. These contents may be historical artifacts, such as a steam engine, or exhibits of natural phenomena, scientific ideas or technological inventions. A museum is an educational county fair, a serious and exciting learning environment where the relationships between one exhibit and the next, and among the exhibits, the visitors and the space as a whole are important. This location-and-object specific attribute sets museums apart from other communications media such as television, books and periodicals. The numbers of science museums in the United States and worldwide have exploded during the past 20 years. Today there are some 200 science centers and museums in the US alone, with a combined visitorship of at least 50 million people per year. These institutions include both the traditional museums of science and technology, which emphasize collections of historical artifacts and industrial devices (often donated by companies) and the more contemporary science center (see PHYSICS TODAY, March 1987, page 65).

Extractions: SCIENCE MUSEUMS Bishop Museum of Natural Sciences The Bishop Museum is Hawaii's State Museum of Natural and Cultural History. Its Web site highlights the various subject areas the museum includes, such as botany, geology, and entomology, as well as the various functional facets of the museum including membership, exhibits, and publications. The site includes a nice sketch of the museum campus. The only noticeable flaw with this site is that access time is rather slow. The site does include a number of photos and most are medium size, rather than small with an option to select a larger version, which adds considerably to the download time. California Academy Of Sciences The California Academy of Sciences, located in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California, is an aquarium, planetarium, and natural history museum rolled into one. The natural history museum includes numerous exhibits and a hands-on discovery room. The welcome page lists the new exhibits, which include a delightful collection of Eskimo drawings. Franklin Institute Science Museum The Franklin Institute Science Museum, in Philadelphia, PA., provides on-line exhibits through its Web site and puts the "spotlight" on on-line education projects. The site has a crisp yet friendly look to it and includes a monthly on-line magazine the "inQuiry Almanack".

Extractions: One good Web resource for planning trips in southern Connecticut is at Fieldtrip.com. The only zoo in Connecticut, the Beardsley Zoo, is about 20 minutes from New Haven; it has a very good petting zoo as well as the usual assortment of larger animals. Real zoo afficionados, however, should probably take the hour drive to the Bronx Zoo, which is truly one of the world's great zoos. Given its location on Long Island Sound, it is perhaps not surprising that the opportunities for maritime exploration are numerous in and around New Haven. Schooner, Inc. sponsors various educational programs and sailing in Long Island Sound aboard the 91-foot wooden schooner, the Quinnipiac. Two of the best field trips involve either the Maritime Center at Norwalk with an IMAX theatre, about an hour west of New Haven, or travel about an equal distance east of the city to the Mystic, CT area with the Mystic Seaport, the Mystic Marinelife Aquarium (a really great aquarium), along with the US Naval Submarine Museum and facility (with submarine tours) in Groton, the Coast Guard Academy in New London, summer music concerts at Harkness Park, the Essex Steam Train, and, for the adult's entertainment, two casinos in Ledyard, CT (Foxwoods Casino Resort and Mohegan Sun Casino).
