5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book for Punch Needle Rug Hooking
I believe this is THE book for learning how to use a punch needle to make rugs and one of the few on this subject. (Most books in this genre are on latch hooking or punch needle embroidery, but not punch needle rug hooking.)I built a frame from the instructions in this book and I am not that handy with building things. Gloria Crouse's design - although it does smack of the 60's - and use of materials was and is absolutely groundbreaking relative to the traditional/primitive style and design of rug making. She developed techniquesand used materials that had never been used before. Thank you Gloria!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
This book is mostly about making wall hangings and is not a good book forthe beginner or anyone looking for information about the type of rugs youwould put on the floor.I was hoping for some good examples of alternatematerials for interesting looks, but this book fell short of that.If youare looking for a fantastic book on this subject look at "The Rug HookBook" by Thom Boswell, it covers it all from where to get supplies, choosing fabrics (with lots of ideas for adding fun and unusual materialsfor texture and color), great patterns from traditional to modern. I justcan't say enough. If you only buy one book.....this should be the one....ithas it all!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring!Gets the creativity pumping!
This is an excellent book about punch hooking, an alternative form of rug hooking.Gloria Crause uses any material she thinks of, there are no No Nos in her method.Anything you can string through the hook is fair game. Her rugs are incredibly beautiful. She offers advice on materials andmethods that are priceless. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great
Book was in great condition, got to my house within a week. The contents of the book were what I had anticipated, overall completely satisfied.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hooking
This is an excellent book with great pictures and patterns of hooked rugs. Many of these could be adapted for use with quilts or cross-stitch or even wood carving.A great buy at a great price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good starter book for beginners...
I used to do very small counted-cross stitch for a hobby. First, my return to college interrupted it, then my eyesight got to be a hindrance to this 'artistic' endeavor. The final straw came when I developed peripheral neuropathy that makes it very hard to handle the small needles. So I went looking for something I could do that would take me away from my sometimes depressing bioethics/disability work, and my always depressing attempt to finish my Ph.D. in science education. My sister and I both reached a consensus that rug hooking would be the answer, as it is a rather large format of crafting.

This book provides a lot of information on how to start, where to get the implements, what to use, etc. Even though I enjoyed looking at what others have done, the rugs shown were a bit too abstract and simplistic for my taste. I'd rather hook something along the line of fine art when I get along far enough. The photos are great, and this is an easily accessible book for beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiring book
I found this book very exciting and has me ready to get into hooking rugs.It really covers it all from materials, dying fabric, choosing fabric, where to buy supplies, great designs for both traditional and modern, andgood information on finishing projects. It gives lots of ideas for other,non-traditional materials that can be added to give your rug texture andthat personal touch. If you are looking for a fantastic book on this subjectlook no further this covers it all. I just can't say enough. If you want tolearn about rug hooking and you only buy one book.....this should be theone....it has itall!

3-0 out of 5 stars Instruction, Yes.Inspiring, No.
I guess this is a fair 'how to' book, but not the quality I expected for the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Includes step-by-step walkthroughs for basic rug hooking, finishing, and dyeing
Designing & Hooking Primitive Rugs is a solid, all-around primer to rug hooking in primitive (often pictorial) styles, including step-by-step walkthroughs for basic rug hooking, finishing, and dyeing. The full-color illustrations not only guide the reader through the steps, but also offer a wealth of sample rugs created in tribute to ancient and primitive styles, encouraging the reader to be creative and dream up one's own design. In addition to rugs, hooked wall hangings, clothing, and decorative items are also featured in this excellent, original addition to needlecraft shelves.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's not my style
I love primitive rugs, and that is the primary style I use to hook, but I was disappointed in this book. Susie is a prolific hooker, and most of the rugs shown are her own creations. Although they are primitive, I also find them somewhat childish, not the kind of rugs I enjoy. So after a quick inspection, I offered it for sale at my rug hookers group and sold it immediately! Definitely a good buy for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Susie's rugs speak to those who love primitive Folk Art.
I didn't know what to expect when I ordered Susie Stephenson's book on primitive rugs. Her ad in Early American Life magazine drew me right in because of the rug featured in it.What a joy to see the many naive rugs, mats and other wonderful hooked items she has created!Susie is a true folk artist. As a rug hooker myself, I know how difficult it is to make a rug look "primitive".It isn't just using dark wool or certain colors. The rug should speak to you, delight you, make you laugh or smile. As I read each page of Susie's book and looked at the rugs she has created, I marveled at her ability to capture the soul of her subjects.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys primitive folk art. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The book that does everything--and well!
I first borrowed this title from my local library. After ten minutes, I realized what a goldmine this book was, and I made a dash for the Amazon website to find my own copy.It was a good move. This book is a keeper!

From a discussion of fabrics, cutters, and hooks, the book moves on to technique.Itprovides really close-up photos of every step of the rug hooking process. If you're still learning the craft, you know how helpful this can be.

There are patterns for, and photos of, many kinds of finished products; these are both helpful and inspirational.Finishing the product--from pillows to wallhangings to stand-up snowmen--is explained and demonstrated.

Is this a trendy book? No.Is it a really, really helpful learn-the-basics-and-want-to-start-hooking-rugs-immediately book? You bet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rug Hooking as Art!
I recently took up this rug hooking hobby, and eventually want to be able to do a rug of my rescue dogs, who are Bichons.Elizabeth Black is truly the most talented person on earth when it comes to hooking animals. Her rugs look more like paintings than something you would ever put on the floor. Each picture was inspiring and so motivating. The book has individual chapters on the steps involved; hooking different parts of the animals; how to choose backing, wool, and color choices.
There simply IS no other book to buy if you're interested in the "wild side" of rug hooking. My dream is to one day attend one of her classes and have my own Elizabeth Black-designed Bichon rug.

Buy this book. Then see what a really talented artist can do with strips of wool.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is your book if you want to hook animals.
I bought this book when trying to hook the face of a goat. I'm glad I did.Elizabeth Black leads the reader through the characteristics of animals and how to achieve a realistic look. Her simple drawings of animal features help the reader when he/she can't remember whether the iris of a goat's eye is vertical or horizontal, or whether a zebra nose is wider at the bottom than at the top. Her tips on using colors to achieve certain effects is helpful too.Now I just wish she'd do one on people.

4-0 out of 5 stars hooking animals
Goregous pictures of beautiful work, and very inspirational.Techniques are shown well, but not enough dyeing information for the subtle shading colors that animals require, or so I felt when I read it.Good reference book though.

Product Description

Latch hooking is one of the rare fiber arts that combines ease and flexibility. This yarn craft takes just minutes to learn, and the only materials required are a latch hook, yarn, and latch canvas. Despite its simplicity, the medium offers endless possibilities from home decoration to provocative artwork. Until now, latch hooking has become stuck in deep shag kitsch. But in Latch-hooking Rugs, artist and educator Lynda Spiro takes the craft beyond its acrylic past. Thanks to Spiro's new book, there is no need to be limited by the dated designs found in most commercial latch hook kits.

Latch-hooking Rugs teaches the basic techniques of the craft through supportive step-by-step directions, color illustrations, and vibrant photographs. The handbook also contains instructions for more than thirty different rug and wall-hanging projects, from bold stripes and checks to floral motifs to three-dimensional effects, all presented in colorways that complement today's decor. For latch-hookers who wish to create their own unique works, Spiro includes a chapter on design and inspiration. She even offers instruction on ways to use leftover yarn.

With more than 100 color illustrations and dozens of contemporary designs, Latch-hooking Rugs revives the meditative craft of latch hooking for today's crafter.

5-0 out of 5 stars very informative and fun to read
I found while there was a lack of technical information the book delivered on its promise- to get you creating great looking rugs quickly. a fun read that I have recommended to many

2-0 out of 5 stars This book does not belong in the Textiles Handbook series
This is a very good project-centered book, so if that's what you want I recommend it.I have two other books in this series (yarn and dying) and they are rich with technique and I expected this book to be similar. The technical information in this book is very basic. For example, I was hoping for guidance selecting wool for projects; the book covers it in 2 paragraphs, and I felt the advice given was questionable.

I'm keeping the book because I like her color schemes. She also gives a great website for help designing your own patterns. ... Read more
