1-0 out of 5 stars Not useful for me
This book is entirely research articles and graphs from those articles. I was looking for something for everyday reference to assist me in teaching a renal diet. This is NOT that kind of book. That is why people are not keeping them after their course and are instead selling them for only $6. They just want to get rid of it becuase it is not helpful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Having just been diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease I was anxious for any and all info I could find on the subject. This little book (I read it in just over an hour) was full of very useful information. It is written in language a non-medical person can understand. In fact, when I showed it to my nephrologist, he wrote down the pertinent info so he can order a bunch of copies to give to his new kidney patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for kidney disease
My husband has been diagnosed with kidney disease and after reading this book I can tell you it is stage 3 so I am not as frantic since I know that dialysis is not iminent. Before I read this book I was frantic that our whole life was changing and I did now know what was around the corner.I now understand the disease and know what more about what he can eat and do to stop this disease from getting worse. It is really hard to find real information that is not about dialysis and this book is simple to understand and so helpful I learned about medication that can make kidneys worse and medical tests that he should be careful with.I really liked the last chapater that gave us some recent research studies.Together with the cookbook by the same author I feel as if we can get through this10 Step Diet & Lifestyle Plan for Healthier Kidneys Avoid Dialysis

1-0 out of 5 stars BEWARE!!!
Not only was this book laid out/printed by people who apparently know nothing about publishing, but the author talks out of both sides of her mouth. For examp;e, for an audience that supposedly includes diabetics, she includes marshmallows in a breakfast menu and Rice Krispies Treats as a recommended dessert in a lunch menu. The last time I checked, marshmallows weren't terribly healthy for anyone, let alone people with kidney disease. The main restrictions in a "renal" diet are sodium, potassium and phosphorus, plus sugar if you are diabetic. She devotes a chapter apiece to the first three, but in each specific chapter she suggests foods that contain unacceptable amounts of the other two and/or sugar.All-in-all, I was able to get more logical and complete information and advice from a quick search on the internet. Please, don't waste your money or worsen your condition with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last!
Finally, a book written for me and others who have kidney disease but are not on dialysis! The writing style is crisp and clear and chockful of information that will help me avoid dialysis. I especially like the recipes -- I've only tried three so far, but they were delicious. Most important, though,is how the author breaks down all the information I need to know so I can control my disease, understand exactly what my lab tests mean, and the effects of my medication. It's like having a best friend by my side who is an expert in kidney disease. Thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book
A very helpful book that really helps one tounderstand the process of kidney disease and how to make changes in your diet and add healthy habbits that can help kidney disease. A great explanation of what all these labs test mean. Each chapter is devoted to one aspect of kidney disease and how to improve it.Easy to follow with lots of case studies that were interesting and helpful ... Read more

I was very satified with this book . It was in good condition and came quickly . I will order from this seller again Thank you

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT COOKBOOK
This book dosen't contain recipes that are just safe. This book contains recipes that are very tasty, and also healthy in other ways besides being easy on the kidneys. I love this cookbook. My wife uses it all the time. I would certainly
recommend this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars renal cookbook
This recipe book has a lot of variety for someone on dialysis. A renal patient is required to eat low potassium, low salt, low sugar foods. That doesn't leave much taste left. This book is excellent for allowing some of the forbidden foods to be incorporated into the diet.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book!
This book has been a blessing. It is so easy to follow! The receipes are great! There are a lot of receipes that we would normally eat. With these receipes my husband feels like he's eating a normal diet and not a "special renal diet". The receipes are easy to follow with foods I already have at home. It is a great value for the price! The print is large and easy to read. The nutrition information at the back of the book is great and neatly organized. The book is definitely worth purchasing! THANK YOU for this book!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not so great
I don't see how this is a renal cookbook. There is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much protein in these recipes....you would have to only eat the tiniest serving in order to be within your daily allowance of protein....it is more like a white trash recipe cookbook too....crappy, unhealthy, high fat recipes in HUGE print.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book more than just a cookbook
My hasband was diagnosed with kidney disease and I didn't know what to feed him, I ordered this book and we have been using it ever since.I was pleasantly surprised to find a going out guide and a frozen entree guide for the days I did not want to cook.Extensive drink guide and even a list of types of lettuce to use. Most the recipes are simple and all have been delicious and the rest of my family has been eating them too. Each recipe has the potassium and other nutrients listed at the bottom I also purchased the other book too and with those two books I feel more informed and not as nervous about what to do.[[ASIN:0615234380 Kidney Health Gourmet Diet Guide and Kidney Friendly Recipes for People Not on Dialysis] this book had been recommended to me by a lady in the doctor's waiting room and I recommend it as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tasty and Healthy
The recipes are wonderful. You don't have to have kidney disease to eat these meals. My husband and I are eating healthier and enjoying food more since finding this cookbook. For the most part, the ingredients are everyday items you would usually have in your kitchen.

2-0 out of 5 stars not very good
it claims to be for kidney health, but a number of things in it are in exact opposite of what I am being told by doctors and others with PKD. and there are some very unhealthy for anyone items listed in it. I cannot respect her as an authority on the subject after going through the book.

chocolate, tea and coffee are hard on the kidneys. only people without kidney disease should use any of those items. for that matter, it is said that Rosemary is also to hard on the kidneys.

many of the recipes have large amounts of sodium in them. some of the recipes call for processed foods which are always excessively high in sodium. some recipes call for processed foods that have chemicals in them no-one should eat-fake whipped cream has plastics and solvents in them.

recipes that should have the healthy (ie salt free, etc.) product in them, do not. butter is called for, not salt free butter. Splenda, a known ant killer, is called for instead of Stevia or cane sugar. cane sugar isn't good for diabetics, but my diabetic husband started losing weight he had not been able to lose when I took him off of Splenda and put him on Stevia.

I wouldn't recommend this book. it is not condusive to staying off of dialysis, which is what I MUST do. off to find a far better cook book.

I would have tagged this message but the tag system is not functioning.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a very good book for the price!
The cook book has some general information on cooking and kidney diets but there aren't a lot of receipes. There are only a handful of receipes and seems cheaply put together. The book is over priced for what you get! I was very disappointed! Not worth the price. A much better value and has been more useful is " The Cleveland Clinic Foundation Creative Cooking for Renal Diets". It is a much better value. Better receipes, MORE receipes,easier..regular meals and I love how ALL of the nutrition information is listed in the back of the book. It makes it so much easier when I cook a meal for my husband that I know exactly how much potassium, calories, fat, protein, etc. are in each meal and each serving. Buy "The Cleveland Clinic Foundation Creative Cooking for Renal Diets" instead of this one...you won't be disappointed.

2-0 out of 5 stars Gourmet? You have got to be kidding!
I am so thankful I didn't buy the $73 edition.I was not impressed by the meagerness of the recipes - many of which looked like they were lifted from Betty Crocker in 1964 - honestly - Cucumber dill dip and Shortcake with Strawberries topped with Cool Whip? However, the information provided about calories, potassium, phospates was informative but could be found on any website pertaining to CKD.Overall, disappointing. The fillers - napkin folding and quick fixes were designed to add pages and were completely unneccessary.I won't even take this to my nephrologist for fear of being laughed out of his office. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars renal lifestyles
This is an excellent book for anyone who is facing renal problems that could lead to failure. It has lots of helpful information that could prevent the end stage disease or at least put it off. Highly recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad advise - good physiology
The explanation of the function and disfunction of kidneys is thorough and direct - aimed at the general public.HOWEVER - the advise on management and what to eat is appalling. If you are truly looking for a book to help you get healthier, this isn't it.The use of pre-packaged, sugar-laden food items is abundant. The book actually recommends keeping calories up by eating pastry and candy. Not a good way to heal a sick body.A much better book is "Coping with Kidney Disease: A 12-Step Program to Keep You Off Dialysis".

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Information for Dialysis Patients and Caretakers of Dialysis Patients
My mother recently began dialysis and I've been looking for information about the requirements of someone who needs this particular diet and why it is necessary. This book is filled with lots of information and is organized into TAB indexed sections for easy reference.I wish it had more recipes, but with the information given, I can remake existing dishes into ones that are suitable for her diet requirements. And, I can read, understand, and act on the notations in her lab reports because the book gives detailed information on what those read-outs mean and what to do to correct problem areas.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very basic
If you are a renal dietitian don't buy it, it is very basic. It is good for patients as an information source, but very basic for the trained professional.I thought it could give some new ideas but I was disapointed. If you want to get ideas and new education materials for your patients try renalrd listserv, it's for free and people are more than willing to share their ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Renal Lifestyles Manual
This is the book for the professional and the novice! It's true what they say, no one gives you the information you need to help yourself or someone else new to kidney disease and dialysis. This is just the greatest along with Cooking for David also available at Amazon.I was at a loss as to how to help my Mother when she decided to go on dialysis.Amazon was the biggest help in finding and procurring literature on the subject and consequently was able to learn myself as well as teach my Mom how to live with this complication of life.Definately 5 Stars!!!!!!!!! ... Product Description
Is Bladder Control A Problem For You?

Do You Have a Frequent Uncontrollable Urge to Urinate?
Does Possible Embarrassment Cause You to Avoid Social Events?
Do You Frequently Experience Pain or Burning While Urinating?

Identifying Potential Kidney Disease!

This isn’t a very sexy topic of conversation. In fact many people will mistakenly put off seeing their doctor rather than discuss it.This is a terrible mistake.

If you try and diagnosis yourself as having a minor bladder infection and start drinking cranberry juice by the gallon, you may be making a life-altering decision.

Okay, so maybe the majority of time it may be something minor like a urinary track infection. But, what if it’s something more sinister. What if you are overlooking a potentially devastating problem with your kidneys?

Sadly, there are hundreds of people out there who have had to undergo kidney transplant because they ignored the early warning signs.

You only have two of them after all.Sure, many people donate one kidney and live trouble-free lives with just one as do their kidney recipients. But, why take that risk if you don’t have to.

Doesn’t it make sense to be prepared and forewarned? If you don’t have symptoms already, or don’t even know what to look for you’re playing Russian roulette with your body.

If you don’t have urinary problems count yourself as fortunate. But, that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook.Do you even have a clue about what the symptoms are so you can be prepared?

The majority of us have little understanding of exactly how our bodies work, let alone what happens when struck with a debilitating disease. There are actually several different types of disease that affects the kidneys.

Understanding what those are and how they affect the body is the first step towards overcoming kidney disease of all kinds. That’s exactly what you will find in “Conquering Kidney Disease.”

That understanding begins with a look at how the urinary system works.Okay, everyone knows that when you gotta’ go you gotta’ go!Reaching beyond that, “Conquering Kidney Disease” learn how the system works to separate the good and bad stuff from your body.

One of the more painful conditions some people experience is kidney stones.Pray that you never have to go through this. The pain is described as excruciating. This is one condition that you might be able to avoid if caught early.

Other related conditions to understand are:

>> Prostate Enlargement
>> Bladder Control
>> Kidney Cancer
>> Symptoms of Kidney Disease
>> Treatment

Of all the kidney conditions by far the most feared is kidney failure. This is the worse case scenario for kidney disease.Do you know what happens to your body when your kidneys fail?

It isn’t pretty. When your kidneys fail the only options are dialysis while you wait for a new kidney.Getting the details of dialysis and the subsequent search for a kidney donor makes up a large portion of “Conquering Kidney Disease.”

Easy to read, “Conquering Kidney Disease”” is written in plain English so anyone can learn what they need to know about kidney disease.Discover what the process is when you are preparing for kidney transplant.

Learn how you are matched with a donor and what you must do after surgery.

If you suspect a loved one may be experiencing the beginning stages of kidney disease, you owe it to yourself to get a copy of “Conquering Kidney Disease.” ... Read more
