From the supplier: A study by the American Tort Reform Assn (ATRA) indicates that plaintiffs' attorneys are evolving into a sort of third political party in the US through a political funding network beyond that of the Republican and Democratic National Committees. ATRA Pres Sherman Joyce says that the ability of plaintiffs' lawyers political committees, spouses and law firms to provide enormous amounts of money to political candidates, often in disguised form, raises serious questions about their effect on the civil justice system.

Description:
Recently, the Colombian party system has undergone dramatic change as 'new' political actors have become increasingly successful in national legislative elections. This paper conducts a two-fold analysis of changes in the Colombian party system. First, the study explores several factors, linked to electoral and registration reforms, which have led to the increased share of seats awarded to 'new' actors, from 1982 to 1998. Next, it examines the substantive effects of those changes for the kinds of policies and issues pursued by new and traditional parties in the national legislature. The findings suggest that in spite of notable changes that have lead to a proliferation of new actors, the Colombian political system has not been radically changed. In other words, it is not evident that reforms have produced truly distinct political alternatives in Colombia. I argue that this is largely a function of incomplete reforms that allowed for the 'legalization' of traditional party factions and the persistence of electoral incentives that do not encourage distinct forms of behavior. ... Excerpt: The Reform Party of Canada (French: ) was a Canadian federal political party that existed from 1987 to 2000. It was originally founded as a Western Canada-based protest party, but attempted to expand eastward in the 1990s. It viewed itself as a populist party. The party became the more conservative Canadian Alliance and move more to the right in 2000, and merged with the PC party in 2003 to form the Conservative Party of Canada, which currently forms the Government of Canada. During its time on the Canadian political scene, Reform had only one leader, Preston Manning, the son of former Alberta Premier Ernest Manning. The Reform Party's agenda was profoundly influenced by its rejection of the dominant notion at the time that Canada was always divided between English and French Canada. The Reform party claimed that this thesis of two founding peoples was flawed and Preston Manning called for a New Canada with a new identity that would solve existing problems, and stated this in his book The New Canada (1992) and laid out a solution: The leaders of Canada's traditional federal parties continue to think of our country as "an equal partnership between two founding races, the English and French"a federation of founding peoples and ethnic groups distinguished by official bilingualism, government-sponsored multiculturalism, and government enterprise. The approach to national unity is to grant special status to those Canadians who feel constitutionally or...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=216395 ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
The lack of ideological depth and clarity of US political parties is often remarked on by observers. This book argues that appearances can deceive and seeks to introduce the complexity of the American party system to an international student audience. The text has been organized to examine the historical evolution of the party system and the forces that have shaped and re-shaped it. With this background established, the contemporary situation and scenarios for the future are closely examined. McSweeney and Zvesper focus their discussion on the main issues of party politics and interests, development, re-alignment, organization, elections and the electorate, parties in government and the debate over the decline and reform of the party system in the US. Essential reference information is included on the 1988 elections, and parties under the Bush presidency. This book should be of interest to students and lecturers of American politics and government, and comparative party systems. ... Read more

Product Description
Campaign finance laws essentially prohibit political parties from fundraising on behalf of individual candidates, forcing candidates to finance campaigns independently. This system favors wealthy candidates and protects incumbents while discouraging challengers. In Better Candidates, Better Parties, Better Government, Peter J. Wallison and Joel Gora argue that allowing parties a greater role in campaign fundraising would strengthen the parties, attract more qualified candidates, and free officeholders to govern without undue financial influence. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for those looking to better understand modern American democracy
Could restrictions on political spending actually be undermining America's democracy? "Better Parties, Better Government: A Realistic Program for Campaign Finance Reform" offers Peter Wallison and Joel Gora's opinion that major problems in American democracy stem from limits on campaign spending; the restrictions in place which all too often seem to protect incumbents, often giving them the election despite low approval ratings. "Better Parties, Better Government" is a must read for those looking to better understand modern American democracy.

Product Description

Throughout the contest for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, politicians and voters alike worried that the outcome might depend on the preferences of unelected superdelegates. This concern threw into relief the prevailing notion that—such unusually competitive cases notwithstanding—people, rather than parties, should and do control presidential nominations. But for the past several decades, The Party Decides shows, unelected insiders in both major parties have effectively selected candidates long before citizens reached the ballot box.
Tracing the evolution of presidential nominations since the 1790s, this volume demonstrates how party insiders have sought since America’s founding to control nominations as a means of getting what they want from government. Contrary to the common view that the party reforms of the 1970s gave voters more power, the authors contend that the most consequential contests remain the candidates’ fights for prominent endorsements and the support of various interest groups and state party leaders. These invisible primaries produce frontrunners long before most voters start paying attention, profoundly influencing final election outcomes and investing parties with far more nominating power than is generally recognized.

4-0 out of 5 stars A thorough, fact-based theory on political party formation
How political parties form could be a subject too esoteric to gain interest outside of academic circles. But an understanding of what makes a political party, from intense policy demanders, to their long coalition, has merit to anyone curious about the American political process. The notion that American political parties are passing away is a widely disseminated one.Using copious amounts of statistical data, this book tells a different story. Hardly a potboiler, this book portrays the a history of political parties in an insightful way that will lead one to a different conclusion. You may disagree, but the authors have tried very hard to prove otherwise. ...
