5-0 out of 5 stars Grandson of Auguste Landry
This book is very special to me. Auguste Landry is my Great Grandfather. Actually I remember when they interviewed him in 1976. I was about 7 yrs. old. His (Auguste Landry's) Great Grandfather's great grandfather was one of the original cajuns who came down from Nova Scotia. It will always be held in my library and passed on to my great grandchildren. He was truly a treasure of the human race! ... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Raccoons For Kids
A warm, engaging, friendly narrative written in first person. The author tells about his time as a boy when he had a pet raccoon. Written with a humorous, informal style, the story includes a lot of information on racoons. Beautiful photographs and humorous illustrations. The reason I didn't give this book a 5 star rating is because page 7 seems to be missing some information-the story doesn't go into how the author found the orphaned raccoon or how they became friends. One sentence says"a little orphan came to my house for a visit" andnext it says "From her perch in my pocket, she peered out over a pointed snout . . ." What happens in between those two events? Otherwise this is a fab book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another fantastic Spanish Salvaje Series book
The information is current and plentiful as usual with this series. The spanish is correct. The pictures are germane to the explanations on the page. They are also excellent pictures. This book is perfect for 8 to 12 year olds as a reference and for just reading. The children want to read it all at once. It definitely gives them everything they want to know about deer; their habitat, food, etc. This also makes it great for the teacher to read before talking about deer.

5-0 out of 5 stars El Mapache is right on
Excellent pictures, great information and easy to read. The America Salvaje series did it again. Sections on babies and interactions with man makes this a spanish reference book that's fun to read. Classification, habitat, food, etc. is done beautifully for 8 to 12 year olds. A must book from a must series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
A great book in the America Salvaje series. Pictures couldn't be better. The information is as up to date as you can get. Placing skunks in their own family instead of with Mustilidae (weasels) is an example. I use this series with second graders (it's hard to find good second grade Spanish reference books on specific animals) but this book is definitely great for 8 to 12 year olds. Easy to read with plenty of information. A must reference and reading book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Raccoon Family Pets
Drawings are great. The information on formulas, when written, was probably the best available, however would now prove to be wrong and possibly life threatening to the neonate raccoon.
Information on diseases, both zoonotic (able to transfer to humans) and general, is extremely sketchy.
Over all, if someone has update information and was adding this book to their library for how it use to be, and what we then knew, it would be ok. Using this book as a guideline for raising one now, even for release back into the wild, would be horrible. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A good resource about Native American foods
I purchased this book because my stepson harvested some acorns recently and I scoured my large cookbook collection, to no avail, for any information on how to process them or use them in cooking. This book contains information on that and so much more.

This would be an excellent resource for a hunter because game and fish of many kinds are covered here. There are recipes for venison curry, venison meatloaf, rabbit pot roast, wild duck with orange sauce and cornbread stuffed trout. There is also a section on edible wild plants and berries, with recipes.Nutritional information is given for many of the food items listed in the book.Did you know that deer meat is loaded with B vitamins, for instance?

To me, one of the best things about the book is that 100% of royalties go to Native charities. In the foreword it says that the royalties have helped to support scholarships, a children's camp and substance abuse programs. So you can give a little back, and you get a great source for Native North American foods. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent photos and text
This is the best of many books I have read about raccoons. It is chock-full of splendid black-and-white photos, and the text is extremely clear, comprehensive, and informative.Unlike some authors who write about these animals, Rue is not given to sentimentality or to "literary" effects. He states the facts plainly, and he has many facts to relate.I read this book through in a very short time and only wished it was longer. My only other regret was that the pictures were not in color (my edition was published in 1964).Reading this book has made me want to read more of this author's works. ...
