This shift has not resulted in a simple vilification of everything Soviet or a naive embrace of all that preceded it, but it has spurred an unprecedented effort to regain the ancient Russian national heritage. Churches are being restored all across the country, great Russian writers and artists whose works were banned are once again being honored, and the individual character of ancient cities and communities is once again becoming established. Next year, the city of Moscow is celebrating its 850th Anniversary, a celebration that will mark the recovery, as well as the commemoration, of its glorious past. For most western visitors, the bulk of Russia's history is nothing more than a compendium of hazy legends and sensationalist rumorsfrom scurrilous stories about Catherine the Great to tabloid television reports of the miraculous survival of the children of Nicholas II. However, the factual history of the country is no less compelling than its fabulous history, and even a brief introduction to the great and not-so-great figures of its past make a visit far more rewarding.     Extractions: A tide of strikes and protests ensued, and the czar was forced to establish a limited consultative parliament called the State Duma. The Soviet of Workers and Soldiers became the organ of the proletariat. To gain some control, Nicholas appointed Stolypin his premier; Stolypin proved ruthless in suppressing any further revolutionary activities. During 190709, at least 2,000 people were executed. Stolypin himself was shot to death in the Kirov Theater in 1911 . Nicholas's hold on the country was further weakened by the outbreak of World War I in 1914. Due to anti-German sentiment, the city's name was Russian zed to Petrograd. The notorious Rasputin, brought into the court to heal the Imperial Family's hemophiliac son, had a strong influence over Nicholas and Alexandra and practically ran the country for a few years, until his death in 1916. By the 1930s, membership in the Communist party grew to 3.5 million. At its height, 19 million Soviets claimed Party membership, seven percent of the total population. Membership was open to any citizen who did not "exploit the labor of others," abided by the Party's philosophy, and gave three percent of their monthly pay as dues to the Party. Members were also required to attend several meetings and lectures every month, provide volunteer work a few times a year, and help with election campaigns. Of the 19 million, one percent were apparatchiks, fulltime officials paid by the Party. The Komsomol, or Communist Youth Organization, had 40 million members. Twenty-five million younger schoolchildren once belonged to the Young Pioneers. Eligibility for full Party membership began at age 18.

In the Byzantine Empire the patriarch of Constantinople remained under the political control of the Christian emperor. Cultural, political, philosophical, and theological differences strained relations between the two cities. Rome demanded Latin as the one ecclesiastical language, but Constantinople encouraged national languages for the liturgy and emphasized translation of the Scriptures. In 1054 leaders of the two bodies excommunicated each other. One reflection of growing difficulties lay in counterclaims to pursue mission in and hold the allegiance of border areas between the two jurisdictions. Rostislav of Great Moravia sought help from the Emperor, who (presumably through the Patriarch) in about 862 sent two brothers, Constantine (later called Cyril; c. 827-869) and Methodius (c. 825-884), from Constantinople to Moravia. They provided Scriptures and liturgy in the mother tongue of each people evangelized. They also trained others in their methodsa major factor in winning Bulgaria.
