Extractions: This website is designed to give students speedy access to the rich array of sources on Russian history translated into English and available electronically. Since the collapse of the USSR a host of different organizations, academic and non-academic, have posted on the web a mass of valuable documents as well as maps, posters, photographs and other visual images. The scale of this activity is a measure of the scholarly interest, ideological passion, and political/diplomatic concern that modern Russian history generates. That it does so is no mystery: the stakes have been so high, the culture so rich, the abuse of power so monstrous, the resistance so articulate, the grandeur and the tragedy of the Russian story of such epic proportions. At UEA there is a strong tradition of teaching and research in the field, currently headed by Professor Edward Acton and Dr Roger Munting in the School of History. Dr Mike Bowker and Dr Tony Kemp-Welch in the School of Social and Economic Studies provide additional expertise in Russian politics and international relations. This website project builds on that tradition. It is funded by a HEFCE Teaching Fellowship awarded to Professor Acton and is being carried out by Dr King, who took his doctorate at UEA and is a specialist in Soviet history. What the site does is to integrate the Internet material directly into our key Russian history units: the year-long 'Russian Revolution Special Subject' (Level III) and, in Semester II, 'The History of the Soviet Union, 1917-1991' (Level II) and 'Gorbachev and the Break-Up of the USSR' (MA). Extractions: With the dissolution of the Soviet Union there has been an enormous resurgence of interest in Russia's pre-Soviet past, as well as a great deal of debate and reconsideration of the Soviet era itself. This shift has not resulted in a simple vilification of everything Soviet or a naive embrace of all that preceded it, but it has spurred an unprecedented effort to regain the ancient Russian national heritage. Churches are being restored all across the country, great Russian writers and artists whose works were banned are once again being honored, and the individual character of ancient cities and communities is once again becoming established. Next year, the city of Moscow is celebrating its 850th Anniversary, a celebration that will mark the recovery, as well as the commemoration, of its glorious past. For most western visitors, the bulk of Russia's history is nothing more than a compendium of hazy legends and sensationalist rumorsfrom scurrilous stories about Catherine the Great to tabloid television reports of the miraculous survival of the children of Nicholas II. However, the factual history of the country is no less compelling than its fabulous history, and even a brief introduction to the great and not-so-great figures of its past make a visit far more rewarding. Extractions: Russian History Tsarism The time from 1682 until 1917 is sometimes referred to as Imperialist Russia. Throughout this period, the Russians developed a strong central government, created a police state, and greatly expanded their territory. The form of government which developed was called Tsarism. It was a form of absolute monarchy or dictatorship with the following characteristics: The Tsar had unlimited power. A strong central government in St. Petersburg controlled all other regions of the country. To carry out the Tsar's heavy handed policies, his government needed to own many businesses in order to make money. A large army was needed to protect the long borders and conquer more land. However, by 1881 Russia was beginning to experience many changes. Tsar Peter the Great (1682-1725) had visited western Europe and brought back western ideas in order to modernize his county. Business and education began to expand. Cites began to grow larger and the economy developed. However, along with scientific and economic knowledge came ideas about freedom and equality. The people of Russia began to resent their old fashioned political system. New ideas like Karl Marx's "socialism" found their way into Russia. Prelude Russian Revolution From 1881 to 1894 Alexander III ruled Russia. Unlike earlier Tsars, he was not interested in reforming Russia. He clamped down on revolutionaries, forced people to speak Russian, and suppressed religious freedom. He was a powerful ruler and, as such, he was able to do this while still forcing industry to expand. However, he was deepening the resentment of Tsarism among the people. In 1894, his son Nicholas II became Tsar. The people hoped he would be more lenient as a leader than his father had been. Unfortunately, he was not. Resentment towards the Tsar's government increased. This resentment was fueled by a number of other factors:

Extractions: Rector, Russian State University for the Humanities What is the significance of history for a society which diligently and obediently has tucked its history into a Procrustean bed? A society that treated the past according to Ptolemaic laws? Ptolemy's ideas were simple and useful; one clearly sees the sun rising in its orbit and circling the earth. The triumph of socialism on all fronts was equally obvious. History textbooks overflowed with the dry remains of the ideas of Lenin-Stalin and, to a slightly lesser degree, of Marx-Engels. Paradoxically, history became an exact science; its formulas and hypotheses became axiomatic, no longer requiring evidence. Today, as we structure our identity, we also begin to study our past. We begin with a void, with what there is not, with the investigation of emptiness and the absence of speech. The effort to pierce this veil of heavy silence consists of recapturing and revealing our history. This is a tangible process, and it is already manifest. The newfound ability to look at facts without prejudice, without an a priori construct into which facts must be fitted, presents us with an opportunity to reclaim our history. Memory is an element of social consciousness, which fundamentally must be historical in nature. By straining our memories we seek to find meaning in our lives, to understand our place in history, and ultimately to know ourselves.

He insists that 1917 was a "fatal fracture of the spine," that the Bolsheviks have fundamentally altered the course of Russian history, that Leninism was an alien infection in the Russian organism that only was made worse by Stalin and his heirs. The diseased product is totalitarianism, the total suppression of individuality and the human spirit. Further back into history than Bolshevism his considerations usually do not take him, although he has mentioned serfdom. My thesis is precisely the opposite: while Marxism, Lenin, and Stalin may have precipitated some particular developments, the preconditions of modern Russian history were such that in fact one should have been astounded had events turned out much differently since 1917 than they have. ...I shall point out the central tendencies of modern Russian history, those features which have been crucial in the development of Russia since, say, the time of Ivan III and which explain the presence of most other phenomena.
