This videotape, part of the Language of Mathematics unit, aims to illustrate the value and use of algebraic expressions for describing patterns (moving from the general to the particular) and for communicating ideas efficiently. The material visually links algebraic expressions to formulas for calculating voltage, acceleration, and the distance to a thunderstorm. Also available for this unit is a teacher's resource book with lesson suggestions and student worksheet packages. Math Vantage videotape series (ENC-013916) Algebraic sentences This series of videotapes aims to motivate pre-algebra students with high energy footage of real world situations that illustrate key mathematical concepts and applications. This videotape, part of the Language of Mathematics unit, describes how chemical formulas are used by a swimming pool manager to maintain good water quality and illustrates how the movement in a golf swing can be described with equations. The material visually links algebraic sentences to formulas for calculating speed, electric current, and temperature using the chirps of a cricket per fifteen seconds. Also available for this unit is a teacher's resource book with lesson suggestions and student worksheet packages.
Lesson Plans: How Big Is That Star? If students have participated in and completed the lesson titled Time some prealgebraicconcepts such pattern recognition, ratios, proportions, decimals, and http://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/teachers/lessons/star_size/star_size.html
Extractions: Imagine Home Lesson Plans Current page How Big Is That Star? Students will be able to explain the relationship between radius and mass among a list of stars. Students will understand how a binary star system's orbit can cause changes in the observed brightness of the system. Students will determine the diameters of stars by analyzing data and manipulating equations. 6th through 9th grades If students have participated in and completed the lesson titled "Time that Period!" , they have a good foundation in astrophysical data analysis and binary star systems. But if "Time that Period!" cannot be completed, please refer to the following: For each class of students, you will probably need at least 2 periods/mods. Here are some examples of what you may want students to do. Substituting your own is, of course, always acceptable!

Extractions: School: Gold Hill Middle School Summary of Lesson: While studying the Louisiana Purchase and 8 th grade French lessons, the math classes will complete a lesson on setting a budget for traveling to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. Our plans are to take the trip with their high school graduating class of 2006 French III class. Therefore students will need to investigate the schedule for Mardi Gras for the year 2006. Students will need to make travel plans, accommodation plans (for four nights), and meal plans. They will need to check the time zones so they can call home to tell their parents of their adventures, and then they will need to copy a recipe to cook once home, but they must increase the recipe by 1½! Students are to turn in their travel plans and recipes either typed in 10 point font or handwritten. A cover page and works cited page must be included.

Three teachers are involved in this projectthe Social Studies teacher, the Math teacher, and the Language Arts and Literature teacher. As part of their study of The Great Depression, students learn about the stock market crash of 1929. As a follow-up to the crash and a connection to real-life situations, students will learn how to play the market in todays world using a stock market game. KET ITV: NASA Connect The web site also includes lesson plans and other background ratios, and GraphingSafety FirstPrecise measurements, ratios and proportions, and charts http://www.ket.org/itvvideos/offering/science/nasaconnect.htm
Extractions: In this series of teleconferences, NASA researchers and other scientists introduce students to topics in math, science, and meteorology as they relate to aeronautics and spaceflight: aircraft and spacecraft design, pilot training, the in-flight performance of aircraft, and the conditions of working in space. Students examine the tools, techniques, and technologies engineers and scientists use to design and build safer, more powerful, and more reliable aircraft and to plan future visits to space and other worlds. NASA Connect supports the national mathematics, science, and technology standards and is endorsed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Each program includes a lesson, focus questions, instructions for a hands-on activity for students, and a web-based component. The web site also includes lesson plans and other background information for teachers as well as links to other resources. The 600 series of programs is new for 2002/03.

Extractions: Technical Support ... Self Assessment On-line courses are a distance learning approach to instruction where the classroom is the course website. Students and faculty communicate via the Internet, email, fax, mail, or telephone. To be successful with this mode of delivery, students must be self-directed learners who possess strong reading and writing skills. Since taking an online course is similar to an independent study experience, students need to be goal oriented and self disciplined. All course sessions will be conducted at the student's convenience over the Internet. Thus, access to the Internet, and understanding basic Internet navigation is essential. Also, synchronous (same time) chat sessions may be required weekly. Students will be required to take examinations at the Blackwood campus at the College Testing Center. Spring 2003
