Product Description
Renowned ceramic artist Karen Karnes has created some of the most iconic pottery of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The body of work she has produced in her more than sixty years in the studio is remarkable for its depth, personal voice, and consistent innovation. Many of her pieces defy category, invoking body and landscape, pottery and sculpture, male and female, hand and eye.

Equally compelling are Karnes's experiences in some of the most significant cultural settings of her generation: from the worker-owned cooperative housing of her childhood, to Brooklyn College under modernist Serge Chermayeff, to North Carolina's avant-garde Black Mountain College, to the Gate Hill Cooperative in Stony Point, New York, which Karnes helped establish as an experiment in integrating art, life, family, and community.

This book, designed to accompany an exhibit of Karnes's works organized by Peter Held, curator of ceramics for the Arizona State University Art Museum's Ceramic Research Center, offers a comprehensive look at the life and work of Karnes. Edited by highly regarded studio potter Mark Shapiro, it combines essays by leading critics and scholars with color reproductions of more than sixty of her works, providing new perspectives for understanding the achievements of this extraordinary artist. ... Product Description

Pottery making is one of the oldest and most widespread of human activities, with a history that can be traced back to the Stone Age. Stylistic and technical changes over time reveal a great deal about the societies in which the pottery was made, so that clay vessels serve as essential cultural and dating indicators, as well as objects of individual skill and creativity.

This lavishly illustrated and comprehensive account begins with the earliest civilizations of the Near East and Middle East and follows the production of pottery chronologically around the globe, from the Mediterranean and the Orient to the Islamic world and ancient America, from neolithic Britain to the factories of Wedgwood and de Morgan, from contemporary Africa and India to Scandinavia and Australasia. The final chapters analyze the development of ceramics as a medium of personal expression by artists and studio potters during the twentieth century.

This is the fourth edition of a work that has been deemed a classic since its first publication in 1972 and, for this new edition, has been completely revised, expanded, and redesigned, with new illustrations throughout. The illustrations are drawn from museums, collectors, and practicing potters across the word and offer representative examples of the major styles, materials, and forms of all periods, allowing us to make comparisons and see relationships between the works of potters who may be widely separated in space and time.

Product Description
Scandinavian art pottery, long appreciated regionally, has enjoyed a rediscovery by international collectors over the past five years. Using almost 500 dramatic color photos, this book explores the major factories, workshops, and studios that initiated and created ceramic modernism in Scandinavia, including Royal Copenhagen, Saxbo, Kahler Keramiks, Ipsen, Gustavsberg, and Tobo. Written by a recognized expert in the field, this long anticipated book provides well researched, up-to-date information on the factories and ceramicists that collectors are most interested in, plus accurate information on marks, dating, and updated values. 4-0 out of 5 stars Satisfied reader from Scandinavia
This is the best available introduction to Danish and Swedish pottery that I know of. Especially the chapters on "Royal Copenhagen", "Saxbo" and "Arne Bang" are excellent. The material on Swedish pottery are not at all that good but still O.K.

3-0 out of 5 stars More appropriately titled: My Danish Art Pottery collection
I'll begin by stating that I am an avid collector with extensive knowledge of Scandinavian studio art pottery. And while I don't consider myself necessarily and authority on the topic, I'm not writing a book on it either.I found Hecht's book informative on some levels and largely misinformative or under-informative on others. The information gathered here filled a gap in collector's books that was long overdue. It is unfortunate, however, that this book is littered with very poor and inaccurate references to its topic. It contains either false, nebulous or no reference at all to some pottery marks and their meanings & rarity. Some of the most significant factories and artists are often barely touched on or left out completely while several pages will be devoted to others that are comparatively far less significant.I also found that of those artists featured, many have no reference to their most representative work. Not to mention, 3/4 of the book is devoted to Danish work, with the last afterthought 1/4 to Sweden, which is, in my opinion, diametrically allocated. And as for values, I don't know where these came from -- some are strangely through the roof while the very few absolute hottest collectible artists will be strangely undervalued.I hate to think that the author is providing this to help sell her own collection at terribly inflated values alongside her Fleetwood Mac albums and tour buttons on eBay while picking up the best pieces at lower prices. Some of us are not fooled.

4-0 out of 5 stars great introduction to Scandinavian art pottery
I'm not a collector of pottery of any kind.I saw this book at a friend's and started reading it.The history of the pottery houses and different genres are very well explained here and it's a compelling read.I was ableto even see styles and artists that matched my sensibilities.Overall, Ilearned something new and saw many pieces of art pottery that I enjoy.Iunderstand why Scandinavian art pottery is so collectable now. ... I have no idea how one person can shove all of this vast knowledge into one brain, but Mike Schneider does it...and does it repeatedly. He masterfully depicts the Ceramic Arts pieces with stunningly clear and crispphotographs (taken by the author). The dialogue in the book goes beyondnormal collectible books and surpasses some of the novels I've readrecently.Bottom line--this book is an asset to any collector, as areSchneider's other books (9 in all--on 9 differing subjects...WOW! )

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great "500" Book
I have a total of five of the '500' books, but this one is my favorite.I am a ceramics sculptor and this is so inspiring. The artists represented in 500 Ceramic Sculptures range from cartoonists to fine artists. That is the beauty of ceramics; it can become pretty much anything you can imagine. If you love ceramics or sculpture or art in general, you will love owning this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars 500 Series: Ceramic Sculptures
Beautiful book, gorgeous photographs of unique and beautiful pieces. Highly recommended. Hundreds of different artists, sculptures for all tastes. Hours of page flipping, lots of great inspirational ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars contemporary ceramic sculptures
Contemporary ceramic sculptures would also be a great name for this book. This is not a how to book but rather shows many different versions of what can be done, and is being done, with ceramics. I love all the 500 series art books.

2-0 out of 5 stars didn't meet my expectations
This book was purchased to show my ceramic students and I thought it was less than inspiring images of ceramic arts.

2-0 out of 5 stars I was disappointed and you might be too
I was looking for a survey of contemporary ceramic sculpture and I thought any book claiming to have 500 images of them should be able to cover all the bases pretty well. Not so.

After buying the book and reading the fine print I learned that it's a compilation of photos from a juried competition (i.e. only those who submitted photos were considered and, of those, only the ones selected by the single, idiosyncratic juror made it into the book).Forget comprehensiveness here.Although there is some good work shown, I found more representation of the "icky/creepy" school of ceramics than I needed.

And where are the bright lights of the ceramic sculpture world?Where is Betty Woodman, Sueharu Fukami, Andrew Lord, Ken Price, Viola Frey, Wouter Dam, Ruth Duckworth, etc., etc.?Not in this book.

If you're looking for a wider, more comprehensive view of this subject I'd recommend Postmodern Ceramics by Mark Del Vecchio or Color and Fire by Jo Lauria. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovin' it

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
I found this book full of great ideas and techniques.I have been a "potter" for 12 years, and sometimes find myself in creative ruts. This book came to me at a time I really needed to explore some new ideas. There is nothing "new" in pottery. But there are new ways to present techniques and I think Maureen did this very well. She works in slip-trailing like no one else I've seen.I was really excited by her latex resist techniques as well.Since receiving this book as a gift, I have tried several of the decorating techniques.I've been energized to try new things, and share them with my students as well.
This book is a great addition to most potter's libraries, something I look forward to browsing for many years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, useful book!

If you're looking for techniques to try as you work in clay, the recently published Surface Design for Ceramics may be just your cup of tea.

No how-to book showing how to execute someone else's ideas, New Hampshire Institute of Art Ceramics chair Maureen Millls' book exxposes the reader, with helpful detail, to a wide range of decorative processes. Close-up photographs show her hands at work demonstrating at every stage of making, from freshly-thrown clay, through biscuit to post-firing. Her finished pieces are fine illustrations of process. The layout of pages is balance and attractive. While the tools employed are simple, possibilities for their use are many, as are the examples of pots and details of pots showing how the effects are achieved. I found myself drawn in, wanting to know which tools and techniques were used, and in what sequence. There is plenty of explanation.

Mills' own pieces are augmented by photos of other artists' work, both contemporary and from historic periods. Inclusion of pieces by potters in New England, both well and lesser-known, is refreshing, as it reveals her interest in and personal connection to other people's work and style. It's a delight to see so many New Hampshire potters represented!

After the (too short!) chapter on design, dividing the book into clay stages is useful, as it avoids the confusion of figuring out at what stage which technique is appropriate. You can jump right in, and imagination is stimulated, not to copy, but to move through and past, to one's own expression. Options for firing and post-firing finishing are thought-provoking, as one sees the results and can identify the methods of firing. Truly, we are being taught to make our own choices, and the possibilities are endless.

Maureen Mills' considerable experience as a teacher informs the book. She and her husband, Steve Zoldak, are remarkable as educators. Helpful hints abound, clear and concise, never with the pedantic verbosity that has often made me turn the page to escape an author's self-centered intrusion on process.

There is something in this book for most potters, and discreet but crucial suggestions are what intrigue me the most, such as: "It's best to take time to visualize the finished piece before you get started."

5-0 out of 5 stars informative & inspiring
easy to follow instructions for the techniques covered along with great pics. whether you are a new or seasoned clay addict it is a nice addition to your library. ... Read more

Product Description

Understanding the passions fueling three of America's most provocative potters

Pottery, Politics, Art uses the medium of clay to explore the nature of spectacle, bodies, and boundaries. The book analyzes the sexual and social obsessions of three of America's most intense potters, artists who used the liminal potentials of clay to explore the horrors and delights of our animal selves.

The book revives from undeserved obscurity the far-southern Illinois potting brothers Cornwall and Wallace Kirkpatrick (1814-90, 1828-96) and examines the significance of the haunting, witty, and grotesque wares of the brothers' Anna Pottery (1859-96). The book then traces the Kirkpatricks' decisive influence on a central figure in the American arts and crafts movement, George Ohr (1857-1918), known as "the Mad Potter of Biloxi" and arguably America's greatest potter. Finally, the book gives a new reading to Ohr's contorted yet lyrical and ecstatic works. Abundant full-color and black-and-white photographs illustrate this remarkable art, with images of many Kirkpatrick and Ohr works being published here for the first time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed my life!
I was given this book by my son, and it has literally changed my life as a potter!I was an intermediate student, who sometimes threw beautiful pots and sometimes not. Who sometimes could center clay beautifully and then sometimes fought clay off the wheel.I had a love of throwing but little control over the actual process, and was becoming frustrated with not having consistent experiences each day. After reading the first few chapters of this book, that all IMMEDIATELY changed.Really!I center easily now. I raise the sides evenly now.My bottoms aren't too thick along the sides... ever.My rim's don't go out of whack. And that all happened the day after I read the first couple of chapters!I am now going back and re-reading in detail. One of the best parts of this book, is the great detail (and photos) of hand positions and her discussion of pressure points, and exactly where you should be touching the clay. Now when I sit down at the wheel - 9 out of 10 pieces are almost perfect... every time.It is so cool. My fellow students call it the "miracle book".I do too!

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent service, good condition
I purchased this book for the excellent graphic illustration and description on throwing clay pots on the potter's wheel. We'd been introduced at my public library. Would have waited weeks to "get what I wanted!"

It came promptly in a sturdy box, which sat on my porch in the rain for the day, but the book inside was packaged well and remained dry!The cover has some sun damage and a small piece of tape on a tear, but no matter; text and illustrations are fine.I'm very happy to own a copy of this book! Thank you for being there Amazon.I'll visit again soon.Excellent service, good condition. Satisfied customer!

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT OVERALL
The book was so-so, but the service was outstanding.....it arrived right on time & in excellent condition. Was in better shape than I expected. Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clarity in writing used to elucidate basic concepts
I sometimes wonder how the beautiful conversational style used in this book came about.

Woody has built creativity into its simple, yet very effective composition, design and production.

I imagine whether Elsbeth S. Woody was just stating her instructions as she threw on her own wheel before the photographer who took all the photographs. The photographs of pottery cross sections provide a great touch in the teaching technique used in this book.

I'm a beginner and having read and applied (albeit partially and to the best of my abilities) only the first couple of chapters so far, I look forward to owning a copy as a lasting reference, and a great read.(My current copy is from the library.)

Product Description
Potters long ago left behind the notion that pots must be purely useful or merely pleasant everyday objects. At the turn of the twentieth century, ceramics—as in other media in both the decorative and fine arts—underwent revolutionary change. The potter emerged from the anonymity of the workshop and made more individualistic statements in clay than ever before.

Ceramics have kept pace with, or even led, new movements in art, from art nouveau, art deco, the Bauhaus, and futurism, through abstract expressionism, pop and performance, to land art and installation art. Stylistic and technical influences are considered here in context, from orientalism and color theory to modernism, postmodernism, and the profuse diversity of approaches that characterizes the end of the century.

The scope is wide, taking in developments in Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, the United States, and Japan. The work of exceptional individuals is appraised, including Taxile Doat, Clarice Cliff, Susie Cooper, Bernard Leach, Isamu Noguchi, Hans Coper, Lucie Rie, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Peter Voulkos, and Adrian Saxe. The relation of ceramics to other disciplines is given close attention: sculptors, such as Antony Gormley and Tony Cragg, and even architects, including Frank Gehry, have made ceramics central to their practice.

This comprehensive survey provides invaluable background and commentary on leading practitioners, critics, theorists, and pioneers, illuminating the development of an art form that seized and inspired the imagination of artists and the public alike in the twentieth century. 180 illustrations, 80 in color. ... Product Description
Raku, pit and barrel firing are three of the most popular firing techniques in ceramics. Accessible to anyone involved in this expressive medium, the unifying theme of these three techniques is the ability to work directly with the fire to achieve both quick and unique results not available with more conventional firing techniques.
In Raku, Pit & Barrel: Firing Techniques you'll discover some of the most beautiful alternatively fired work, as well as extensive how-to techniques and step-by-step instructions to help you duplicate the processes in your own studio. Explore dozens of techniques and discover the many special effects available using these ancient firing methods. You'll love the experience of working with glowing red-hot pieces in a raku kiln, uncovering pots from a pit fire or peeling the aluminum foil off your latest saggar experiment.

The following is a small sampling of what you will find:
Where There's Smoke Frank Fisher knew that the most common reducing materials used for post-firing reduction were paper and sawdust. He wondered what would happen if you tried other materials, so he tested a few. See the results of his test and maybe you'll want to experiment with a few yourself.

Porta-Kiln Barrel Firing After attending a workshop on smoke firing, Martha Puckett began to experiment and loved the technique. She developed a technique for firing in a small barrel she can pull out whenever a pot is ready for her firing touch.

Karen Shapiro looks at the common objects around the house and sees The Art of Everyday Life. Her works include raku versions of milk containers, spice cans, bags of snacks and make up paraphernalia. Common items elevated to art.

What's a Raku Glaze? Steven Branfman answers this question in detail. It really amounts to almost anything can serve as a raku glaze it just depends on what effect you're looking for. Considered one of the foremost authorities on raku in the U.S., he provides his expertise on Raku Glazing giving tips and techniques gleaned from years of experience.

Horsehair Raku is a technique that has appeal. Applying horsehair is not a complicated process but there is a sequence that assures good results. Bob Hasselle describes his method and his work provides stunning results.

Another way to affect the surface of glowing raku ware is by Wrapping Raku Pots with Wire. Mark Gordon didn't know what inspired him to wrap wire around a piece, but after he did, he was on to something unique.

When we think of raku we mostly think of pots that will sit on a shelf. Barbara VanSickle shows you how Making a Raku Mural gives you a chance to explore making art for the walls. Her technique is complete from design to final mounting.

Jimmy Clark finds working with pit firing offers a Sense of Timelessness. His vessels are freely formed while resting on his lap or in sling molds made by loosely spanning a bucket or other round container. His peeled terra sigillata technique is just the beginning to subjecting pots to multiple firings.

If you want a Successful Barrel Firing, Paul Wandless provides all the direction you'll need. In this step-by-step technique, you'll find the best advice for each stage of the process from selecting the right clay to making the barrel and firing it.

John Martin discovered that using gold and opal lusters along with copper takes his work to a new level and he describes his process inEnhancing Raku with Lusters.

When Mark Richardson was looking for a quick way to fire 90 small covered jars with a crackled smoke decoration as part of a commission, he needed to speed up the process. His wire basket with a barbecue grill base and fencing did the trick for Peel-Away Slip in a Hurry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely recommended
A great book, with lots of techniques to try out and learn from. Steve Branfman provides good advice on naked raku slip, and others give good tips on firing.
These are articles that have been published over the years in Ceramics Monthly magazine. Anyone looking to start, or broaden their use of these techniques is advised to take a look at this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars definitely NOT recommended
I am very disappointed with this book; the reason? It is advertised as being a book on firing techniques, but the information on firing is very scarce and it is mostly a compendium of a few american potters who wrote their own article in which they mostly talk about their life (wife, children and what they do) rather than explaining what the technique they present is. Many parts of the book are a copy and paste from other articles. The only good thing is the photographs which show beautiful work.
In conclusion, if you are looking for a book on firing techniques do not buy this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Raku, Pit & Barrel: Firing Techniques (Ceramic Arts Handbook)
This is great book! Can't wait to try out some of these techniques. It's more of a "pottery" book than a "Ceramics" book but lots to glean and learn.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice variety of techniques
Nice variety of techniques, some I had not seen before. Nice color photos. Reasonably well written. I would like to have had more examples/techniques for the price of the book. Particularly I was looking for Pit Fire techniques. ... Read more

Product Description
The 1906 earthquake in San Francisco triggered not only a devastating three-day fire, but also a tuberculosis epidemic, a result of the ash- and dust-filled air. Working women were disproportionately afflicted with the disease. Fortunately, many of them regained their health---and cultivated new artistic skills---at a unique treatment center across the Golden Gate.

The Arequipa Sanatorium, located in rural Marin County, was founded in 1911 by Dr. Philip King Brown. Influenced by the philosophy of the Arts and Crafts movement, he sought to provide his working-class female patients not only with the medical care and rest that they needed, but also with the opportunity to engage in a creative pursuit that was both therapeutic and marketable. Brown settled upon pottery.

Through vintage photographs, technical illustrations, and beautiful full-color reproductions, Fired by Ideals: Arequipa Pottery and the Arts and Crafts Movement tells the story of this progressive institution and analyzes the distinctive pottery created there. With their simple charm and strong ties to the natural environment, Arequipa wares remain treasured examples of American art pottery and the Arts and Crafts era. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Arts & Crafts Book
I really enjoyed this book. I am a huge Arts & Crafts fan, and this was well-researched and both esoteric and interesting to those of us who love this art form

5-0 out of 5 stars Filled with thoughtful and meaningful wares
Collaboratively presented by Suzanne Raizerman (Imogene Gieling Curator of Crafts and Decorative Arts, Oakland Museum, California), Lynn Downey (History, Levi Strauss and Company); and John Taki (California College of Arts and Crafts and President, Leslie Ceramic Supply Company, Berkeley, California) Fired By Ideals: Arequipa Pottery And The Arts & Crafts Movement is a truly impressive, 136 page artbook showcasing a unique selection of historical ceramic pottery sculpture. In 1911, after the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco triggered a tuberculosis epidemic, a special treatment center called the Arequipa Sanatorium was founded for working women afflicted by the disease. Pottery became daily practice, both as an outlet for creativity/healing and to create marketable wares. The most amazing samples of this fine pottery are displayed in full color in Fired By Ideals, along with descriptive captions and a narrated history of the Sanatorium that created them. A fascinating catalogue filled with thoughtful and meaningful wares, Fired By Ideals is a unique and enthusiastically recommended addition to personal, professional, academic, and community library arts and crafts reference collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for beginning to intermediate ceramists.
One can never buy all the books for a hobby but if you can afford just one book on handbuilding techniques, it would be for the book; THE ART OF HANDBUILT CERAMICS.

It has lots of pictures, instructions and inspiration on how to work your clay. It's worth every penny. My only problem is that I can't share it with other ceramists.....not being sure that they'd return the great book once they've read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great handbuilding book
