Editorial Review Product Description Every school and public library should update its resources on Spain with this lively and succinct narrative of Spain's long and rich historical experience. Emphasizing people rather than abstract developments, this narrative makes Spanish history readable and engaging. Based on the most recent scholarship, it examines the politics, society, economy, and culture of Spain chronologically, focusing on the last two centuries. Pierson, a noted authority on Spanish history, traces Spain's foundations in the Roman empire and Muslim conquest to its golden age in the late Middle Ages, its subsequent decline, and its struggle to build a democratic government and modern economy following the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. The work provides a timeline of events in Spanish history, brief biographies of key figures, and a bibliographic essay of interest to students and general readers. An introductory chapter offers an overview of Spain today, its geography, government and politics, economy, religion, and culture. The next few chapters discuss its earliest cultures, its place in the Roman empire, its Christianization and years as a Germanic kingdom, and its incorporation in 711 C.E. by military conquest into the world of Islam. The energies developed in the Christian reconquest of Spain led to its embarkation on the conquest of an overseas empire in the Americas and the Philippines that lasted for more than 300 years and had a profound effect on global history. The interests of the Habsburg (1516-1700) and Bourbon (1700-1808, 1814-1868, and 1875-1931) dynasties on the Spanish throne made Spain a major player in European power politics into the years of the French Revolution and Napoleonic wars. By 1825, its resources drained, Spain painfully adjusted to straightened circumstances, endured civil wars and dictatorships, and struggled to build a democratic government and modern economy, which it has accomplished today. Editorial Review Product Description "The singular remarkable fact about the Basques is that they stillexist," Kurlansky asserts. Without a defined country (other thanEuskadi, otherwise known as "Basqueland"), with no known relatedethnic groups, the Basques are an anomaly in Europe. What unites theBasques, above all, is their language--Euskera. According to ETA,"Euskera is the quintessence of Euskadi. So long as Euskera is alive,Euskadi will live." To help provide a complete picture of the Basques,Kurlansky looks at their political, economic, social, and evenculinary history, from the valiant Basque underground in World War IIto medieval whalers to modern makers of the gâteauBasque. The most affecting chapter focuses on Guernica, a smallmarket town bombed by German planes for over three hours on April 26,1937, and uses interviews with survivors to illustrate the horror ofthe attack. Kurlansky is clearly enamored of the Basques, which leads him to seethem in a uniformly positive light. That rosy outlook aside, TheBasque History of the World is an excellent introduction to theseromantic people. Are they the original Europeans? Kurlanskydoesn't weigh in on the issue, preferring instead to honor the Basquerequest Garean gareana legez--let us be what weare. --Sunny Delaney Customer Reviews (82)

Editorial Review Product Description This is the first study in English of the political history of Muslim Spain and Portugal, based on Arab sources. It provides comprehensive coverage of events across the whole of the region from 711 to the fall of Granada in 1492. Up till now the history of this region has been badly neglected in comparison with studies of other states in medieval Europe. When considered at all, it has been largely written from Christian sources and seen in terms of the Christian Reconquest. Hugh Kennedy raises the profile of this important area, bringing the subject alive with vivid translations from Arab sources. This will be fascinating reading for historians of medieval Europe and for historians of the middle east drawing out the similarities and contrasts with other areas of the Muslim world. Very good study of Islamic Spain
Good introduction
A condensed summary of events from a different perspective His intentions are to give the Muslim side of thestory (an aspect which has been seriously considered by so-called"western" scholars only in the last half century, and which issparking increasing interest especially in North, Central and SouthAmerica). As an academic Historian he achieves his goal at the price ofhaving to oversimplify and often make assumptions based on the most currentopinions. This is not necessarily to say that he is biased. But I dobelieve that he has over-extended the possibilities with this book. Thereis way too much information, which is too complicated to be compressed intosuch a small space. He is to be admired for his ambition, but I'm afraidthat unless you are already aware of the History of the area and just needa summary of events which is a bit more detailed than any encyclopedia, this book is going to be a heavy load to carry. For the beginner who justneeds to know more about Muslim Spain, this is a reliable source, but don'tget discouraged by the density of its contents, take it one chapter at atime, and you can greatly benefit from it. For further details on certainaspects and for a list of sources, Kennedy provides a very goodbibliography at the end, which will undoubtedly enrich your knowledge ofthe subject. I give it four stars for its factual content (a very highachievement on its own), but won't give it the extra star because of theoverload it causes. ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description Prelude to Empire spotlights and brings into focus the events and developments in European history which prepared the way for Henry the Navigator and the age of the Great Discoveries. "Henry's just fame," writes Bailey W. Diffie, "has obscured an essential fact: in 1415 he was a man with a past as well as a future. Some forty years lay before--some forty centuries lay behind. Just as the voyages of his captains would form the indispensable base for Columbus and Vasco de Gama, so the achievements which made Henry the dominating maritime figure of his time grew from the previous experience and generations of fishermen and traders." The first study in English to examine the development of Portugues commercial methods and overseas contacts, and the first in any language to bring together all the pieces of the story, Prelude to Empire has been designed for the general reader and the college student as well as the specialist. |

The foundations for modern Spain defined
A vital text on a re-emerging topic
Classic Standard Text
A good reference but a tough read The book is sensibly divided into major historical time periods (i.e. Visigothic, Caliphate, etc) that give a good organizational framework. Each time period typically has two chapters. The first is more or less a historical narrative and is usually the more difficult to get through. The second is an often interesting discussion of the social and political institutions of both Christian and Islamic Spain. For example, there is a chapter that outlines the major officials of the Umayyad caliphate, their roles, powers, prejudices and so on.

Editorial Review Product Description A History of Portuguese Overseas Expansion 1400-1668 provides an accessible survey of how the Portuguese became so influential during this period and how Portuguese settlements were founded in areas as far flung as Asia, Africa and South America. Malyn Newitt examines how the ideas and institutions of a late medieval society were deployed to aid expansion into Africa and the Atlantic islands, as well as how, through rivalry with Castile, this grew into a worldwide commercial enterprise. Finally, he considers how resilient the Portuguese overseas communities were, surviving wars and natural disasters, and fending off attacks by the more heavily armed English and Dutch invaders until well into the 1600s. Including a detailed bibliography and glossary, A History of Portuguese Overseas Expansion 1400-1668 is an invaluable textbook for all those studying this fascinating period of European expansion |

Editorial Review Product Description Portugal is evolving quickly as an integrated part of modern Europe. What was until the mid-1970s an old-world society, where 80 percent of the economy was controlled by an oligarchy of eight elite families, is now increasingly a model of an advanced European state. Portugal now ranks highly among the countries of the world in level of globalization and quality of life; it even boasts one of the best-developed renewable energy infrastructures of any developed country. Despite such widespread modernization, however, "old country" Portuguese traditions persist in the political realms, as well as the traditional lifestyles that endure in the countryside. Culture and Customs of Portugal devotes careful attention to such topics as Portuguese holidays, media, marriage, gender roles, architecture, and education, providing readers with a full account of Portugal's rich heritage and modern culture. The drastic changes in the nation following the 1974 military coup that overthrew a 48-year dictatorship receive special attention. |
