Product Description

When a powerful femtosecond laser pulse propagates in an optical medium, self-focusing occurs. This book reviews the current up-to-date understanding of the physics of propagation leading to the self-transformation of the laser pulse into a white light laser pulse during self-focusing and filamentation. The physics of multiple filamentation and competition will be discussed. Its capability to melting glasses inside the filaments is observed which explains the physics of wave guide writing. Its potential applications in atmospheric sensing and material processing together with possible future challenges in the interaction of such self-transformed white light laser pulses with atoms and molecules will be treated. Nonlinear optics such as third harmonic generation in the filaments with self-phase locking will also be discussed.

Product Description
Computational physics-the use of modern high speed computers to carry out numerical modeling of physical situations that cannot be addressed by analytic theory or experiments-is a distinct field of physics. Tajima has played a leading role in developing this approach to the physics of plasmas and particle beams. The physics of plasmas is an extremely rich and complex subject as the variety of topics addressed in this book demonstrates. This richness and complexity demands new and powerful techniques for investigating plasma physics. This text provides not only a lucid introduction to computational plasma physics, but also offers the reader many examples of the way numerical modeling, properly handled, can provide valuable physical understanding of the nonlinear aspects so often encountered in both laboratory and astrophysical plasmas. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Holds up after twenty years
This isn't a new edition of Tajima's original compendium but the physics and algorithms described are still in widespread use and it never assumes that you're using particular software or a programming language. This book is for graduate scientists and engineers who shouldn't find it difficult to translate the algorithms into pseudo-code that they can create a simulation or make calculations from. There's an awful lot of theoretical work developed here from neural networks to accelerator design and I found at least three of the chapters useful for the plasma physics project that I was working on. Still, after twenty years an update of this book would be worthwhile given the author's fascination with the invention of the "mouse".

2-0 out of 5 stars They call this a computational book?????
Collection of theoretical background for computational methods. Poor description of the methods themselves. This book is difficult to read. You better be a top notch expert in plasma physics to get anything out of this one. I was able to learn a few bits here and there, save your money and buy something else. ... Read more

Product Description
A comprehensive textbook and reference for the study of the physics of ionized gases
The intent of this book is to provide deep physical insight into the behavior of gases containing atoms and molecules from which one or more electrons have been ionized. The study of these so-called plasmas begins with an overview of plasmas as they are found in nature and created in the laboratory. This serves as a prelude to a comprehensive study of plasmas, beginning with low temperature and "ideal" plasmas and extending to radiation and particle transport phenomena, the response of plasmas to external fields, and an insightful treatment of plasma waves, plasma instabilities, nonlinear phenomena in plasmas, and the study of plasma interactions with surfaces.
In all cases, the emphasis is on a clear and unified understanding of the basic physics that underlies all plasma phenomena. Thus, there are chapters on plasma behavior from the viewpoint of atomic and molecular physics, as well as on the macroscopic phenomena involved in physical kinetics of plasmas and the transport of radiation and of charged particles within plasmas. With this grounding in the fundamental physics of plasmas, the notoriously difficult subjects of nonlinear phenomena and of instabilities in plasmas are then treated with comprehensive clarity. ... Product Description

Reviews of Plasma Physics, Volume 23, presents two high quality reviews from the cutting-edge of Russian plasma physics research.

"Plasma Models of Atom and Radiative-Collisional Processes", by V.A. Astapenko, L.A. Bureyeva, V.S. Lisitsa, is devoted to a unified description of the atomic core polarization effects in the free-free, free-bound and bound-bound transitions of the charged particles in the field of multielectron atom. These effects were treated independently in various applications for more than 40 years. The universal description is based on statistical plasma models of atomic processes with complex ions and atoms. This description makes it possible to extract general scaling laws for the processes above. This review is the first attempt to give the universal approach to the problem. All types of transitions are considered in the frame of both classical and quantum models for the energy scattering of the particle interacting with the atomic core. Experimental and theoretical results are given for the oscillator strengths of atoms and highly charged ions, polarization phenomena in photoeffect, new polarization channel in recombination and for Bremsstrahlung of electrons, relativistic and heavy particles on complex atoms and ions.

"Asymptotic Theory of Charge Exchange And Mobility Processes for Atomic Ions" by B.M. Smirnov reviews the process of resonant charge exchange, and also the transport processes (mobility and diffusion coefficients) for ions in parent gases which are determined by resonant electron transfer. The basis is the asymptotic theory of resonant charge exchange that allows us to evaluate cross sections for all the elements and estimate their accuracy. A simple version of the asymptotic theory is used as follows: a parameter is the ratio between an atom cross section, and the cross section of resonant charge exchange. The cross section of this process is expressed through asymptotic parameters of a transferring electron it the atom. Experimental results are also used, but their accuracy is usually lower than can be obtained by the asymptotic theory.

Product Description

The primary objectives of this book are, firstly, to present the essential theoretical background needed to understand recent fusion research and, secondly, to describe the current status of fusion research for graduate students and senior undergraduates. It will also serve as a useful reference for scientists and engineers working in the related fields. In Part I, Plasma Physics, the author explains the basics of magneto-hydrodynamics and kinetic theory in a simple and compact way and, at the same time, covers important new topics for fusion studies such as the ballooning representation, instabilities driven by energetic particles, and various plasma models for computer simulations. Part II, Controlled Nuclear Fusion, attempts to review the "big picture" in fusion research. Mathematical derivations are comprehensively explained to better enable readers to later concentrate on the physics. All important phenomena and technologies are addressed, with a particular emphasis on the topics of most concern in current research.

Product Description
As unique sources of coherent high-power, microwave, and millimeter-waveradiation, gyrotrons are an essential part of the hunt for controlled fusion. Presently, gyrotrons areactively used for electron cyclotron resonance plasma heating and current drive in variouscontrolled fusion reactors. These sources have been under development in many countries formore than forty years. In spite of their widespread use, however, there is as yet no single book tointroduce non-specialists to this vital field.

Now Gregory S. Nusinovich, an early pioneer of the gyrotron and widely regarded today as theworld's leading authority on the subject, explains the fundamental physical principles upon whichgyrotrons and related devices operate. Nusinovich first sets forth some "rules of thumb" thatallow readers to understand gyrotron operation in simple terms. He then explores thefundamentals of the general theory of gyrotrons and offers an overview of the various types ofgyro-devices, including gyromonotrons, gyroklystrons, gyro-traveling-wave tubes, andgyrotwystrons. He explains not only the theory, linear and nonlinear, but also the practicalchallenges that users of such devices face.

This book will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students as well as to those whodevelop gyrotrons or who use them in various applications. It should also appeal to plasmaphysicists interested in charged-particle dynamics, as well as to applied physicists needing toknow more about micro- and millimeter-wave technologies. ... Read more

Product Description

This book deals with theoretical thermodynamics and the statistical physics of electron and particle gases. While treating the laws of thermodynamics from both classical and quantum theoretical viewpoints, it posits that the basis of the statistical theory of macroscopic properties of a system is the microcanonical distribution of isolated systems, from which all canonical distributions stem. To calculate the free energy, the Gibbs method is applied to ideal and non-ideal gases, and also to a crystalline solid. Considerable attention is paid to the Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein quantum statistics and its application to different quantum gases, and electron gas in both metals and semiconductors is considered in a nonequilibrium state. A separate chapter treats the statistical theory of thermodynamic properties of an electron gas in a quantizing magnetic field.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Physics of Atoms and Quanta:Introduction to Experiments and Theory
Text is clearly written and covers relevant topics for advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate students.Problems have been relevant to text material and at a level appropriate to the written text.Beginning chapters are clearly redundant with most Modern Physics texts, but still appropriate for setting up the Atomic Physics chapters in the text.My current knowledge of the book is overwhelmingly positive and it would encourage me to recommend it to others looking for this material.

Amazon provided the text in excellent condition within their specified time frame and at their advertized price.

5-0 out of 5 stars A rare work
This book is indeed clear and easy to read and undoubtedly useful for advanced undergraduates and I imagine it would be a good review for would-be postgraduates. It also introduces more advanced topics, such as the Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations and introduces many topical issues. Very good at conveying the mathematical 'tricks of the trade' but unlike so many texts on quantum physics, this book is actually a physics book! Not only does it deal with the mathematical structure of the theory, but it has a satisfying and detailed presentation of the experiments! It is also superbly illustrated (as all text books should be!). I find that too many authours these days seem to care more for the maths than the physics - let us not forget what physics is for! In my mind this is one of the best advanced undergraduate quantum physics texts that I have seen. It is also a great educational work - solutions to problems are provided which is essential for self-study, which this book is admirably suited for (in addition to being quite suitable for directly supporting a taught course). This book is very student friendly, a rare thing these days, and far more readable and entertaining than many other books on quantum physics.

4-0 out of 5 stars OK book on Atom Physics
This book is very readable and very clear. It can be used in advanced undergrad courses on atom physics. It treats the development of AtomPhysics theory and experiments (Rutherford, Bohr etc.). It providesexplanations to many practical quantum problems in the field of atomphysics, so it can also be used to clarify problems in a Quantum Physicscourse. Some example problems briefly discussed in books like Gasiorowiczor David Griffiths on QF were very well explained here. Quite complete onthe subject of Atom Physics. Exercises with (brief) solutions. Germanauthors seem to have done a thorough job. Negative points: heavy, expensive, limited subject, published some time ago. I consider it a goodbuy afterall. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Chen is the standard for a reason
The standard book for introductory plasma physics is "Introduction to Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion" by Francis Chen.Unfortunately, the semester I took the course, the professor chose to use this text.It lacks any worked-through examples and has no answers to any of the problems so you have little assurance that you are understanding the concepts.Furthermore, the authors have a bad habit of stating, "It is easily shown that ..." and then never showing the derivations, nor providing information on where such derivations may be found. The result is a collection of random equations with a binding and pretty cover.I consistently find myself turning to alternate texts to clarify the material presented in this text.If you are forced to use this book, make certain you have access to a copy of Chen's book and start reading there.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good text but homework problems too easy
The text was nicely written and describes a lot of phenomena but the homework problems were way too easy and most of the time did not even require the knowledge presented in the chapters. For example, many of the problems were of the form "plug this into the quadratic equation" or "add these two equations and simplify".Without problems that present a test of knowledge it was hard for me to solidify my reading or to know whether I really understood it.That criticism aside, the author was able to present a lot of information in an understandable form without getting needlessly bogged down in details. ...
