Editorial Review

Product Description
This book presents a collection of papers that give acomprehensive description of the major areas of research on theinteractions between plants and their pathogens. State-of-the-artknowledge about research on microbial avirulence genes and plantresistance genes, about pathogenicity factors and signals forestablishment of infection, about elicitors and intermediates in thesignalling pathway, and about the genes involved in plant responses topathogens and environmental stress is reviewed.
The different topics covered show that modern tools of plant cellularand molecular biology are now available to investigate verysignificant models of plant-pathogen interactions and to identify themolecular determinants of the two partners that trigger defenceresponses, the signals involved and the mechanism of theirtransduction, the spatial and temporal regulation of defence geneexpression in relation to the spread or localization of the pathogen.
The first trials to exploit these results for enhancing plantresistance and crop field by biotechnology are presented. The book isa main reference source for research scientists and advanced students. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Genetics has transformed plant pathology on two occasions: first when Mendelian genetics enabled the discovery that disease resistance was a heritable trait in plants, and secondly when Flor proposed the gene-for-gene hypothesis to explain his observations of plant-parasite interactions, based on his work on flax rust in North Dakota starting in the 1930s. Our knowledge of the genetics of disease resistance and host-pathogen coevolution is now entering a new phase as a result of the cloning of the first resistance genes. This book provides a broad review of recent developments in this important and expanding subject. Both agricultural and natural host-pathogen situations are addressed. While most of the book focuses on plant pathology, in the usual sense of the term embracing fungal, bacterial and viral pathogens, there is also consideration of parasitic plants and a chapter demonstrating lessons to be learnt from the mammalian immune system. Three overall themes are addressed: genetic analyses and utilization of resistance; population genetics; and cell biology and molecular genetics. Chapters are based on papers presented at the British Society for Plant Pathology Presidential meeting held in December 1995, but all have been revised and updated to mid-1996. Written by leading authorities from North America, Europe and Australia, the book represents an essential update for workers in plant genetics, breeding, biotechnology and pathology. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An interesting read but lacking in some areas
The contents of this book arewell presented and clearly written. If your African beans are in trouble, look no further for an answer.I did find some serious shortcomings though. For one, the car chases were totallyunrealistic. Everybody knows that a '69 Charger can outrun even thespeediest of Rickshaw drivers.I thought the KGB agents weretoo woodenand contrived. Also, there is no real evidence of Black mountain gorillasbeing able to type (until now). In spite of that, this is a well researchedand elegantly written tome.Purchase it and enjoy

Editorial Review

Product Description
Each plant--pathogen interaction involves a two-waymolecular communication. On one hand, the pathogen perceives signalsfrom the plant, secretes chemical arsenals to establish infectioncourts, and produces metabolites that disrupt structural integrity, alter cellular function, and circumvent host defenses. On the otherhand, the plant senses the signals from the pathogen, reinforces itscell walls, and accumulates phytoalexins and pathogenesis-relatedproteins in an attempt to defend itself. The production ofpathogenicity and virulence factors by the pathogen, the elicitationof defense mechanisms by the plant, and the dynamic interaction of thetwo are the focal points of this book. The book will be of interest toresearchers and advanced undergraduate and graduate students in theareas of plant pathology, plant physiology, and plant biochemistry. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Review from Plant Pathology (2003) 52, 114-117
"Overall the design and the quality of the book are good. The layout is easy to follow and the diagrams and tables are of a high standard. The publisher suggests that the book will be of interest to researchers, advanced undergraduates and graduate students in the areas of plant pathology, plant physiology and plant biochemistry, and we would agree with this... One asset of the book is the extensive reference lists included in each chapter; these would be very helpful for someone new to the area since they are generally up-to-date and include full titles, enabling informed choices to be made by those wanting to do further reading." ... Product Description

Megaplasmids are extrachromosomal genetic elements in the size range of 100 kb and larger. They are found in physiologically and phylogenetically diverse groups of bacteria and archaea. By definition, megaplasmids are not essential for the viability of their hosts under all growth conditions, but paradoxically many megaplasmids carry the genetic information for the defining and characteristic traits of the organism in which they reside.

Microbial Megaplasmids reviews our knowledge of the extensively studied representatives, such as the catabolic plasmids of the pseudomonads, the rhizobial Sym plasmids, the Ti plasmids of the genus Agrobacterium and the giant enterobacterial virulence plasmids. It also presents snapshots of more recently discovered megaplasmids. The contribution of megaplasmids to the biology of their hosts is described, highlighting the interactions between megaplasmid and chromosomal genes.

Product Description
This book is based on papers presented at the SecondInternational Symposium on Bacterial and Bacteria-like Contaminants ofPlant Tissue Cultures held at University College, Cork, Ireland inSeptember 1996, with additional invited papers. Since the firstsymposium (published as Acta Horticulturae 225, 1988), therehave been considerable advances in both plant disease diagnostics andin the development of structured approaches to the management ofdisease and microbial contamination in micropropagation. Theseapproaches have centered on attempts to separate, spatially, theproblems of vertical disease transmission, via infected explants toprogeny microplants, from laboratory contamination. Disease control isbest achieved by establishing pathogen-free cultures, while laboratorycontamination management is based on subsequent good working practice.Control of losses due to pathogens and microbial contamination invitro addresses, arguably, the most important causes of losses inthe industry; nevertheless, losses at and post establishment can alsobe considerable due to poor quality micro-propagules. In this book, aholistic approach to pathogen and microbial contamination control isevident with the recognition that micropropagators must addresspathogen and microbial contamination in vitro, and diseases andmicroplant failure at establishment. There is increasing interest inestablishing beneficial bacterial and mycorrhizal association withmicroplants in vitro and in vivo. The contents are divided into sections. In each section there arepapers that update contributions offered at the first symposium; forexample, major advances have been made in microbial taxonomy anddiagnostics based on advances in DNA-based techniques. Consolidationhas occurred in therapy and laboratory contamination management.Novel, and arguably speculative, in vitro contamination controlbased on autotrophic culture is described; and disease control atestablishment using bacterial and mycorrhizal inoculants is discussed. ...
