4-0 out of 5 stars Photography as art
The fine black and white photography of Edward Weston is featured in this oversized book and is one of those books to viewed over and over. The book also has an extremely satisfying text that highlights some of the phases of his career. The essays lend insight into the man. Of particular interest was the indication that Weston saw his photographic art in the same light as some of the famous Mexican artists of the time like, Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco and others. He strived to have his art looked at in the same light as those in other mediums. He was drawn to these artists, their culture and their works. The after effects of the Mexican revolution, transformed into a cultural renaissance was his palette. Also discussed was his mingling with artists of his times and his reciprocal affect on fellow photographic artist Tina Mondotti. Weston saw and recognized the art in the everyday lives of the the people, heightened during festivals, especially of a religious nature. He particualrly liked the pulquerias. He also was intrigued by the folk art created by common artisansand captured these elements with his lens. Although the book is not limited to his Mexican phase, I found this part of particular interest. There are also paintings that were done by his contemporaries with parallels drawn to his work. His nudes are an exquisite honor to the female body and all it's wonderful curves. There are plenty of nudes featured as this must have been one of his favortie subjects. The early works are featuredbut his later works are amazing. After 1927 his sojourn to California and his studies of natural forms at the beach and in the sand dunes resulted in some phenomenal images. Also his ability to see erotic imagery in fruit forms is inspiring. If you like the visual arts you will love the works of this master photographer. A great gift book for the camera buff in your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautifully printed - nicely selected works
The show for which this book is the catalog was at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston during May of 2000.As a graduate student at Boston University studying photography I found this book to be wonderful - it is beautifullyprinted, and the scholarship that went into the text and editing reallyoffer insight and context for Weston's photography. He is most well knownfor works like the one which appears on the cover, but the book includesearlier and later works, and discuss how they relate to the famous ones. Weston was active in the first part of the 20th century, and most of theworks in this show were taken in California and Mexico. His photography isbeautiful and rich and this book would help novice and connoisseur alikeappreciate it more. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly moving collection of photos and quotes
One of my favorite books about outer space, and one to return to over and over. Both the photos and brief quotes are at times achingly beautiful, powerfully conveying the emotional depth of the astronauts' experiences. If you're looking for a book to give to a young person to show them the joy and wonder of the experience of going up into space, I can't think of a better one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh Perspectives on a Fragile Planet
Let's not forget we're living on a little planet, what some like to call spaceship earth. If earth is a spaceship, this is the owner's manual: THE HOME PLANET. Political boundaries are dissolved by a moon's-eye view of Earth to create bold visions of the planet through 150 color photographs culled from the American and then-Soviet archives. Commentary is provided solely by eloquent quotes from astronauts of 18 nations which are shown both in original language (be it Arabic, Chinese, Vietnamese, Hindi, Mongolian, French, German, Spanish, Hungarian, Romanian, Polish, Czech, Bulgarian, Dutch, or Russian) and English translation. The message is simple--we are all citizens of the same global nation.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent choice for anyone of any age
This superb coffee table book by Kevin W. Kelley is especially apt in this day and age, when so much in life feels precarious and precious.A simple and simply eloquent collection of photographs and quotations, it is so much more than the sum of its parts.

The astronauts who have either landed on the moon or have orbited the earth have so much to tell us and it's easy to see from the photographs why they feel words fail them.Luckily for us, words DON'T fail them. This select, small group of men and woman try mightily to tell us what their experiences were, and overwhelmingly they succeed in conveying the mystery and beauty they saw from their unique perches in space.A few of the better bits include:

"[From space] you have an almost dispassionate platform--remote, Olympian--and yet [seeing the earth from up there is] so moving that you can hardly believe how emotionally attached you are to those rough patterns shifting steadily below."
- THOMAS STAFFORD, USA

"O. Henry, the American writer, wrote in one of his stories that if you want to encourage the craft of murder, all you have to do is lock up two men for two months in an eighteen-by-twenty-four-foot room.Entering 'Salyut,' which was to be both our home and our office for six months, we told each other: We are brothers.I am you and you are me."
- VALERIE RYUMIN, USSR

"Before I flew, I was already aware of how small and vulnerable our planet is; but only when I saw it from space, in all its ineffable beauty and fragility, did I realize that humankind's most urgent task is to cherish and preserve it for future generations."
- SIGMUND JAHN, GERMANY

In no book that I can think of does the phrase "A picture is worth a thousand words" better fit.The photographs herein are astonishing in showing the exquisite planet we occupy.A view of England's North Sea coast looks like a slab of lapiz lazuli, its surface flecked with sparkle and hue.Canada's Lake Winnipeg from space has the appearance of something primal, almost fetal. The Indian Ocean off Madagascar looks like a sheet of slate over which some divine presence has tossed a handful of diamonds. So few of us can ever hope to share the experience of these men and women that this book is all the more precious, and beautiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only Being in Orbit Could Give You a Better View!!!!
This coffee table book presents some of the best photographs taken of the Earth and the Moon by both astronauts and cosmonauts.Due to the large size of the book, these photographs are even more stunning. In addition to the photographs, several quotes by those who have flown in space accompany each photograph.

One of things that I really liked about the book is that other than the small quotes, there is very little accompany text. The only real text is at the end of the book, where NASA's chief photographic planner describes "Why Space Photography?"I found thispart kind of chilling where he states, "it is a far more air-polluted Earth today than it was in the past ... twenty years ago"

5-0 out of 5 stars A new perspective
A wonderfully moving and beautifully compiled collection of images.Mountain ranges and river deltas dissolve into abstract designs of astounding beauty. The accompanying commentaries show a world united inspace in a way that is sadly absent on Earth. The book would make anybodywant to become an astronaut.

This is the perfect present for anyoccasion. It has touched the hearts of everyone I know who has ever seenit.Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT book for beginner
If you are a beginner in photography like me and want to learn the basics....this book explains it in plain english. No longer are shutter speed, apeture sizes (f-stops), and film ISO numbers a mystery. Now I know the basics of what I need to get a picture to come out right.

If you are already into photography and know the basics, then the boook probably won't "do it" for you, but for a beginner this was EXACTLY what I was looking for. I guess the people who gave it lower ratings before this review didn't read the sub-title at the bottom of the cover that says "An INTRODUCTION to the Equipment and Creative Techniques of Digital Photography".

It even goes into photo editing with popular programs later in the book too. I highly recommend it for beginners like me.

3-0 out of 5 stars I purchased a copy...
It is definately helpful to those just getting into digital photography, but it just isn't as advanced as I would like it to be.It has a lot of useful information for manipulation, but it is lacking in the actual "shooting" phase of photography.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacking
This book is lacking some critical insights. It doesn't far enough for a novice. It isn't clear when attempting to explain complex but critical information. It is insufficient.

3-0 out of 5 stars Unfortunate cover
The book sounds like just what I am looking for, but they are going to have to change that unfortunate choice of cover page... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful instructor resource
This collection of descriptions of available videos pertinent to the field of psychology is a helpful resource for those who teach at the college or high school level. More qualitative, movie review-style comments would be helpful. The list is also far from comprehensive. Hopefully future editions will improve on this good first start. It is an invaluable addition to compliment the video collection of the typical university library. ... Read more
