Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Allosaurus is a genus of large theropod dinosaur that lived 155 to 145 million years ago, in the late Jurassic period (Kimmeridgian to Tithonian). The name Allosaurus means "different lizard" and is derived from the Greek ?????/allos ("different, strange") and ??????/sauros ("lizard"). The first remains that can definitely be ascribed to this genus were described in 1877 by Othniel Charles Marsh. As one of the first well-known theropod dinosaurs, it has long attracted attention outside of paleontological circles, and has been a lead dinosaur in several films and documentaries. Allosaurus was a large bipedal predator with a large skull, equipped with dozens of large, sharp teeth. It averaged 8.5 meters (28 ft) in length, though fragmentary remains suggest it could have reached over 12 meters (39 ft) ... Read more

Each volume focuses on a specific scientific discipline — biology, chemistry, earth sciences and physics — offering an in-depth understanding of each discipline and its theories, creating a sense of real-life relevance for students and those not scientifically-inclined, and including interesting facts and details relating to each principle. The fascinating entries offer explanations of concepts using a straightforward, step-by-step approach, and present theories in their everyday applications. Some examples of the entries covered include how osmosis is used in dehydrating fruit; Charles' law and the chemical reaction that sets off an airbag; and how algorithms are used to figure out the NCAA playoff tournaments.

Product Description
This volume 2 and its companion volume 1 present the results of new investigations into the geology, paleontology and paleoecology of the early hominin site of Laetoli in northern Tanzania. The site is one of the most important paleontological and paleoanthropological sites in Africa, worldrenowned for the discovery of fossils of the early hominin Australopithecus afarensis, as well as remarkable trails of its footprints. The first volume provides new evidence on the geology, geochronology, ecology, ecomorphology and taphonomy of the site. The second volume describes newly discovered fossil hominins from Laetoli, belonging to Australopithecus afarensis and Paranthropus aethiopicus, and presents detailed information on the systematics and paleobiology of the diverse associated fauna. Together, these contributions provide one of the most comprehensive accounts of a fossil hominin site, and they offer important new insights into the early stages of human evolution and its context. ... Product Description

Computational paleontology is simply a term applied to using computers and its facilities in the field of paleontology. However, we should be exactly precise in describing the term through explaining the main themes of this motivating and attractive scientific field.

The uppermost aim of this book is to explain how computation could be competent in fetching fossils to life and the past to present. Computers for paleontologists save time and costs, interpret mysterious events precisely and accurately, visualize the ancient life definitely and undeniably.

Product Description
An introductory text providing a readable and up-to-date treatment of the history of vertebrates. Based on the author's combined teaching and research, the book provides a unified account of the whole range of vertebrate groups and presents new lines of research in palaeobiology and phylogeny. The contents follow a classical time-evolutionary sequence and topics are arranged in such a way that basic morphological and palaentological information alternates with special themes. The book covers all the main steps in the evolution of the vertebrate groups and presents samples of the latest analyses of palaeoecology, functional morphology, together with current opinions on evolutionary rates and cladistics. Chordate origins and the appearance of early fish are dealt with in the opening chapters, and the book continues with the development and radiation of amphibians, early reptiles and reptiles of the Triassic Period. The later diversity and adaptations of fish are described before leading into the age of dinosaurs. The book progresses by describing the evolution of birds and mammals, and concludes with a presentation of the latest information on human evolution. The text is fully supported by many specially prepared illustrations and photographs of specimens, reconstructions and scenes. A notable feature of the work is that it also outlines some of the key research problems in this field and gives an introduction to a broad range of current analytical approaches that have been adopted by scientists throughout the world. The work is sure to be of value to students of zoology and geology, and will afford fresh insights into one of the most perplexing and contentious fields of scientific study. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC WORK BY AN INFLUENTIAL 19TH CENTURY FIGURE
Richard Owen (1804-1892) was an English biologist, anatomist and paleontologist, nowadays most known for his coining of the word "Dinosauria" ("Terrible Reptile") as well as his opposition to Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. However, his work in paleontology was an important step in convincing many in the 19th century that "change" had indeed taken place in biological earth history.

Owen begins by stating, "paleontology demonstrates that life has been enjoyed during the same countless thousands of years; and that with life, from the beginning, there has been death... perhaps the most important and significant result of paleontological research has been the establishment of the axiom of the continuous operation of the ordained becoming of living beings."

He rejects the theories of individuals (such as Philip Gosse: Omphalos; The Evolution Debate, 1813-1870 (Volume IV)), "who prefer to try to make it be believed that God had recently, and at once, called into being all these phenomena; that the fossil bones, scales, and teeth, had never served their purpose---had never been recent---were never truly developed, but were created fossil; that the creatures they simulate never actually existed; ... that the geological evidences of superposition, successive stratification, and upheaval were, equally with the paleontological evidences, an elaborate design to deceive and not instruct!"

Although Owen believed that natural selection alone was inadequate, he approvingly quotes Darwin's original paper before the Linnaean Society and its "ingenious suppositions."Owens believes that "A retrospect of the genetic history of fishes imparts an idea rather of mutation than of development, to which the class has been subject in the course of geological time," citing "evidence of an `arrest of development,' or of a retention of embryonic characters in those primeval fishes."

His creationist orientation is clear in statements such as, "Those who deny the existence of design in the construction of any part of an organized body; and who protest against the deduction of a purpose from the valves of the veins or the lens of the eyeball, repudiate the reasoning which the paleontologist carries out ... but such minds are not, nor have been, those who have contributed to the real advancement of physiology or paleontology," and that "such intellects ... manifest some, perhaps congenital, defect of mind, allied or analogous to `color-blindness'..."

Owens' demonstration of extinction was an important advance: "That species, or forms so recognized by their distinctive characters and the power of propagating them, have ceased to exist, and have successively passed away, is a fact no longer questioned.""On the problem of the extinction of species, little demonstratively can be said: and on the more mysterious subject of their coming into being, no light has yet been thrown by experiment or observation." "It is most probable, therefore, that the extinction of species, prior to man's presence or existence, has been due to ordinary causes---ordinary in the sense of agreement with the laws of organization and of the never-ending mutation of the geographical and climatal conditions on the earth's surface."

He is no catastrophist: "One willingly admits the proof so afforded of the former existence of animals now unknown; but one may demur to the conclusion that their extinction was due to some sudden catastrophe."

He concludes, "if I have succeeded in demonstrating the adaptation of any structure to the exigencies, habits, and well-being of the species, I have fulfilled one object which I had in view; viz., to set forth the beneficence and intelligence of the Creative Power."

Owens' work is essential reading for anyone interested in the development of evolutionary theory.
