At Santa Rita School it was decided that First Grade homework officially begins in late January. This homework letter includes a suggested Homework Schedule, an explanation of Math Warm-Ups, and helpful hints on how to help with the Spelling Lesson and the "Weekly Word List." The Spelling Lesson is on the pink sheet . The Weekly Word List is on the blue sheet. The Math Warm-ups are on the yellow sheet . The Homework Schedule will usually be the same each week. If there is any change we will let you know via our classroom newsletters. Please post the "First Grade Homework Schedule" in your home so that you can refer to it for the rest of the year. We have tried to make the schedule as stress free and low key as possible. The homework should take about 20-30 minutes a night. Let us know if you or your child have any problems with the homework or the homework schedule. You may want to consider setting up a little study comer. A small table or desk, a chair, a container for pencils, and a light will help provide a mini-office for your child.

Extractions: June 2, 1999 By Kathleen Kennedy Manzo Washington Some of the nation's top education researchersincluding scholars long thought to be in opposing camps in the so-called reading warshave come together to create new guidelines for K-3 literacy programs. The Primary Literacy Standards, unveiled here last week by the project known as New Standards, provide detailed benchmarks for what children should master in reading and writing. New Standards, a reform initiative run by the Washington-based National Center on Education and the Economy, convened a panel of 19 experts. They represented various positions along the spectrum of thinking on literacy instruction, from whole language to phonics. Bitesize is a nicely produced site, with slick graphics of a smiling shark (bitesize, geddit?) to guide you around. As the name suggests, the site doesn't attempt to talk you through endless reams of text - there's very little point in that approach online anyway - but instead provides digestible, bite-size gobbets of information to assist your GCSE revision, and if you get stuck you can email a teacher with a question. An excellent revision guide from the BBC. The list of subjects covered is impressive: business studies, design and technology, religious education and Spanish to name just four. Parkwood Home Homework Notebooks -On the first Monday after the parent Back-to-School Night, students will receive their first homework assignment sheet. This will be placed in the students' 3-ring binder to be taken home. Students will receive a new assignment sheet every Monday. All homework for the previous week will be due on Monday. Reading Homework -As a 2nd grade teacher, I have a very strong commitment to reading. This commitment is mirrored in my homework program. I expect that every child will spend a minimum of 15 minutes per day reading. In order that your child have books to read independently at home and at school that are at his/her level, our school has a program called Accelerated Reader. Please help your child record, on their homework record sheet, what books were read. Don't forget to save time each day for reading aloud to your child even after they are able to read themselves. This read aloud time is crucially important in helping your child increase their vocabulary, build comprehension skills, and continue to experience the adventures that are within their grasp as they become independent readers. Math Homework -In addition to reading, I will also send home a homework math packet on Mondays. It will include additional practice on math concepts being taught that week in class, problem solving, and math facts practice. The math packet will be due the following Monday.

The required nightly reading time is no less than 15 minutes. (Of course, more is even better!) You need to have a parent sign the HOME READING RECORD worksheet every night that you read. When you have reached a total reading time of 300 minutes (five hours), hand in your HOME READING RECORD worksheet to me, and you will be given an award in class for your super reading accomplishments!
