Extractions: Dr. J Bret Bennington Micropaleontology and Palynology Stromatolites Although stromatolites are megascopic organo-sedimentary structures more within the realm of sedimentology than micropaleontology, they are produced by bacteria (prokaryotic organisms) so we will consider them along with other fossil microbes. The term Stromatolite is defined as an accretionary organosedimentary structure, commonly laminated, megascopic, and calcareous, produced as a result of the growth and metabolic activities of mat-forming, filimentous prokaryotes - primarily cyanobacteria ("blue green algae", which are not algae at all - algae are eukaryotes). Sedimentary particles carried by currents and tides settle out onto the mat surface. Bacterial cells grow upward through the sedimentary material, trapping and binding it, and forming a new mat surface. This process is continuously repeated to produce laminations of sediment bound by older mat material with the living growing microbial mat remaining on the outer surface of the mound. Stromatolites can be stratiform (flat)

INTRODUCTION In the 21st Century, the global demand for energy resources will continue to increase driven by economic growth in developing countries and the growing population (Figure 9). Figure 9 Fossil fuels will provide most of that energy for at least the next 60 to 80 years (Figure 10). Biostratigraphy has been and will continue to be an integral tool in the search for and production of oil and gas. Thus, there are economic incentives to sustain current industrial paleontology staff and reinvigorate university training programs in stratigraphically oriented paleontology. Figure 10 Sustaining current staff depends on demonstrating the technical value of biostratigraphy to the business of finding and producing oil and gas. Once the value is documented and effectively communicated, renewal of staff will provide jobs for at least two new generations of industrial paleontologists. The industrial hiring of paleontologists will provide incentive for
Extractions: Introduction WORKSHOP SUMMARY RATIONALE In early September 1997, 108 paleontologists and allied individuals from 30 countries (Table 1) met at Senckenberg Museum, Frankfurt, Germany to participate in a Senckenberg World Conference entitled "Paleontology in the 21st Century". This body of individuals represented: The various organizations that employ paleontologists (Table 2). Many of the societies that serve the profession and, therefore, the specialties that comprise the science (Table 3). An fair representation of participants by number of years in paleontology (Figure 1). A gender split of 94 males and 14 females. Meeting participants identified and discussed issues facing the various specialties/components of paleontology, as well as the science of paleontology in general. The assembly agreed that the issues identified are among the most important ones facing paleontology today. It is planned now to engage the entire community of interest (all paleontologists and those interested) in a dialogue of those issues approached in Frankfurt and perhaps formulate new issues and alternatives not yet recognized. The ultimate objective of the planned dialogue is to establish consensual solutions/directions as paleontology enters the next millennium. Thus, the participants in Frankfurt agreed that the purpose of the Senckenberg workshop was:

Extractions: STRATIGRAPHIC PALYNOLOGY - the use of palynomorphs, their identification, distribution, and abundance to correlate among sedimentary sequences of any age, or to provide chronological control for these sedimentary sequences. Exclusive of environmental palynology , but the study of sedimentary sequences often includes both stratigraphic and environmental palynology. Typically, stratigraphic palynology is applied to pre-Quaternary sediments and is, therefore, a part of Paleopalynology. However, stratigraphic principals apply to sediments of all ages, so stratigraphic palynology is also a part of Quaternary Palynology. Stratigraphic Palynology is a branch of biostratigraphy - applying geological and evolutionary principals to the understanding of sedimentary sequences and the geological record. Careers in Paleontology Stratigraphic Palynology played a prominent role in petroleum exploration during the mid-twentieth century. From 1965 - 1980 the major North-American petroleum companies hosted large palynology laboratories. The ubiquity of palynomorphs permitted the detailed analysis of subsurface stratigraphy necessary for locating petroleum reservoirs. In 1967, petroleum palynologists, and other paleoplaynologists, founded the American Association of Stratigraphic Palynologists to promote training of, and communication among stratigraphic palynologists worldwide.
