A great resource .... fun read also !
This book is an excellent resource, whether you are an experienced or first time trip leader of a multi-day river trip.

I've been an active trip leader since 1997 .... from weekend trips within a few hours drive from home .... to month long trips deep into wilderness. I purchased this book in 2004 and have found it an indispensible reference. This book provides a very methodical way to plan, organize, and pack for a trip (includes check lists etc) .... I find that using this book means I use my pre-trip time more efficiently and I worry less about whether or not I've fogotten or overlooked something !!So it is worth every cent:-)

Maria Eschen presents what sounds like a dry subject in a very amusing way. The approach she documents for planning a trip is also applicable to many types of group multi-day wilderness trips (e.g. climbing, mountaineering, ski touring) though obviously the river and equipment specific info is not applicable! ... The content was sparse, but ok, as were the pictures. But for [the price] it was a complete disappointment! An adult river otter can weigh between 5 and 14 kg (11 and 30 lb). The river otter is protected and insulated by a thick, water-repellent coat of fur. The river otter, a member of the weasel family, is equally versatile in the water and on land. kids love it; makes you think.
I wish they would reprint this entire Survival! series, darn it.We found the Otter one in a second-hand store and my 3- and 5-year-old adore it. What you do is, as you read, you have to choose the animal's actions out oftwo ormore options.Will he go up the bank or try to catch the slowfish, etc.? Whichever action you choose has a consequence. It is sort of anaturalist's version of Goosebumps "You Choose the Scare", andmuch more informative. The author makes it clear that pollution andencroachment of humans on animal habitat make for a greater percentage ofdangerous choices, which is why some types of wildlife are disappearing. Even after my little boy "learned" which choices were safest forthe otter to make, ensuring a "survival" outcome, he still wantedto read it again and again.Though my preschoolers liked it, I wouldactually recommend it for ages 4-8. ... This book as well as each of the other sticker books by Maurice Pledger are an exceptional value not only for the price and opportunity for children to have fun while learning, but for their outstanding attention to detail.The sticker pictures are very realistic and the text on the pages provide the kind of readings that help children develop their imaginations.The attention to detail includes even the real helpfulness of identifying on the sticker pages the proper page for placement.The other great feature is providing the actual names for the creatures shown.Real pictures, real names and a great story for real learning.
